(More customer reviews)This is an excellent cinnamon crumb cake mix and it can be made into an 8x8 cake (which we prefer). Even though it is not eligible for free shipping for Amazon Prime members, we ordered 4 Honeyville products at the same time and total shipping was only $4.49 cents, or a little over a dollar for a case of these 12 cake mixes.
Based on the price when I ordered a case of 12, the cost was a bit more than $3.00 a box plus an additional eight cents in shipping per box. This isn't going to break the bank and the results are far superior to typical store cake mixes.
Based on the instructions (more about that in a sec), we find it easier to make a cake than a batch of muffins. We were also looking for a mix that would work for a camping trip. This is ideal, although you do need either 1 egg or powdered eggs as well as water and some sort of grease for the bottom of the pan. We use Pam but Crisco would work fine.
The recipe works with either fresh or powdered eggs (we tested it). A fresh egg is a bit better than dried but both serve their purposes. You do have to adjust the water you use if you add powdered eggs.
About the instructions: You get a package of cake mix and a package of brown sugar. If you make an 8 x8 inch cake, you pour half the batter in the greased pan, add 1/2 cup of topping, pour the rest of batter on top and use a knife to gently swirl the batter and brown sugar/crumb mix. You then add the rest of the brown/sugar crumbs on top. Very simple, took maybe 5-6 minutes before I could pop it in the oven.
I didn't find it nearly as simple for muffins but that is just my take. Try it both ways and see what you prefer. We keep plenty on hand for snacks, morning cinnamon cake, etc.
I do have one quibble: I think the serving sizes listed on the box per are small. No way does each cake serve 12-16 people! We have teens in our house often and one cake serves about 3-4 hungry teens. For the average person, you might be able to serve 9 people with decent sized portions - if they only had one piece each. Even so, I think the price is super for the great taste (about 45 cents per piece if you serve 9 portions) and there is NO skimping on either the topping or the cake mix. Even if you serve larger pieces, you are paying a bit more than $3.00 per cake and this price is fine when we want a quick, convenient mix and can't make a crumb cake from scratch.
The taste is far superior to any store bought cakes in the same price range. Ingredients:
Sugar, Enriched Bleached Wheat Flour (Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamine Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Modified Food Starch, Salt, Sodium Aluminum Phosphate, Sodium Bicarbonate, Egg Whites, Dextrose, Guar and Xanthan Gum, Natural and Artificial Flavors. Cinnamon Topping: Sugar, Corn Syrup Solids, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean and Cottonseed Oil, Molasses Powder, Cinnamon, Salt, Silicon Dioxide.
