A few years back, my blood cholesterol got out of control. The docs wanted me to stop doing everything I loved: sausage links, eggs and bacon, you know the routine. Thankfully, a friend had been through the same ordeal. He turned me on to oat bran. It worked a miracle for him, kept him off the medication, which nobody will admit decreases the libido and can lead to impotence, but it does, and his love life was perfectly fine still.
Mine isn't, but it isn't because of the cholesterol meds. I don't need them. It's the high blood pressure meds. Did I mention they nut 'ya too?
It isn't the cholesterol meds cause I eat oat bran. That's right. I'm a bran gulper. I take mine in the form of apple-raisin muffins. One a day. Oh god, sometimes, when the cupboard is bare, I eat two or three. I even sprinkle it into my stir fry beef. I feel so daring when I let myself do it.
We bran gobblers are a discriminating group. None of this coarse stuff for us. We want the fine-grind - to suck every last drop of that nasty cholesterol outta our gut. More surface area when it's ground fine, get it?
Trouble is, there's such a stigma attached, supermarkets don't carry it. Sure, they have condoms and K-Y jelly on display, you can even buy a Fleet emema. What do you suppose a person does with one of them? But fine Oat Bran? No way.
What's an addict to do? We gotta have our supply. There's no choice but to buy on-line in bulk and let me tell you honey, that's where Honeyville Farms comes to the rescue. A fifty pound sack for what amounts to about a buck and a half a pound. How can you beat that?
There is one little problem. A batch of muffins is 2 1/4 cups of bran. You don't want to even try to figure out how long fifty pounds is gonna last you. Fifty pounds might even be a lifetime supply, but hey, how much you figure what's that drug...oh yeah, Lipitor, how much you figure a lifetime supply of THAT is gonna cost? Never mind the limp noodle syndrome, with Oat Bran the savings in dollars is gonna be humongous.
Ready to try it yourself?
Here's a healthy recipe for kick-rear muffins*:
2 1/4 cups fine Oat Bran
1 1/2 cups skim milk
3/8 cup Olivio - melted (instead of butter)
3/4 cup honey
1 cup raisins
1 1/2 eggs (use eggbeaters)
3/4 teaspoon cinammon
3 large apples - grated (or fruit of choice - blueberries, etc)
instructions: Soak raisins in hot water. Soak oat bran in milk 5 minutes while you set out Olivio, honey, fruit, eggs and cinammon. Combine first part ingredients, including raisins.
_______________________________________
2 cups whole wheat flour
3/4 teaspoon Baking Soda
1 tablespoon Baking Powder
In another bowl, mix last three ingredients. Fold in mixture just enough to blend.
Bake in 400f for 20 minutes. Makes 18-20 muffins.
