The Hempnut Cookbook: Tasty, Omega-Rich Meals from Hempseed Review

The Hempnut Cookbook: Tasty, Omega-Rich Meals from Hempseed
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
From "The Vegan News", Autumn 2001:
Hempseed has been consumed by humans for over 5,000 years. The Hempnut Health and Cookbook details hempseed's history, its exceptional nutritional value, its medicinal properties and also briefly mentions some of hemp's other uses other than as a foodstuff. Hempnut is essentially shelled hempseed and is possibly the most nutritious plant food on earth. It can be used in many recipes as a replacement for nuts, soy products, grains or even eggs. The Hempnut Health and Cookbook contains 116 easily-prepared, mainly vegetarian recipes. About three quarters of which are either vegan or could be made vegan fairly easily by substituting maple syrup for honey and by replacing the dairy products with soya milk, soya yogurt and vegan cheese. The remaining recipes contain larger amounts of eggs and honey and would be more difficult to convert, especially for the new vegan. It does seem a shame though that we have to convert any of the recipes when the authors are themselves vegan! It's an American book, so oven temperatures are given in degrees F and ingredients are measured in cups.

IBS Relief: A Complete Approach to Managing Irritable Bowel Syndrome Review

IBS Relief: A Complete Approach to Managing Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the second edition of the same named book first published in 1999. The book seems to be written primarily from a dietitian's and psychologist's perspective so there are at times what I consider murky medical advice given, such as Healthy Eating and the concept of MyPyramid. The concept is that if you "stick" to your diet then you will be in control of your symptoms. I only wish! There are some good insights as to how powerful cognitive restructuring can be. One statement that made the book for me was "We recently did a study of the pain experienced by IBS sufferers versus Crohn's sufferers. We found that the pain of those with IBS was every bit as severe as the pain experienced by those with Crohn's disease. The difference between the two groups is: social support. Crohn's disease has more social support". This tells the authors and the readers that suffering with IBS can actually be greater than Crohn's because of the lack of support. To this end, the book does offer some valuable advice to talking to your doctor and learning to take control of your own health.

Getting Thin and Loving Food: 200 Easy Recipes to Take You Where You Want to Be

Kathleen is not only an excellent chef and host of a motivational Food Network show (Cooking Thin), but an inspiration. She has lost a lot of weight and kept it off. Her cookbooks aren't JUST cookbooks. In the first section of each book, she has a "heart-to-heart" with her readers about her philosophy on healthy eating and her own keys to weight loss.
I have lost 30 pounds so far using Chef Kathleen's warm yet no-nonsense philosophy. More importantly, I have maintained a healthy lifestyle (and my weight loss) for over 2 years now. If you want to get off that diet roller coaster once and for all and make changes you can live with for life, this book is for you.

As a recently diagnosed diabetic I thought that my days of wonderful desserts were over! Then a friend found The Type 2 Diabetes Desserts Cookbook at our local library and brought it to me to read. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading about Ms. Sonerals diabetic experiences as she writes about being a diabetic with an up-beat point of view. The book, not only has recipes for delicious sounding desserts, but also useful cooking hints and information. As a confirmed 'sweet-a-holic', I must say that after reading this book, my outlook for dealing with the diabetes is definitely brighter! Thank you, Lois Soneral. ...

Joy's LIFE Diet: Four Steps to Thin Forever Review

Joy's LIFE Diet: Four Steps to Thin Forever
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This diet book is full of the advice you already know, while all true, I felt it was redundant. There are many diets out there that have the same script: eat this, don't eat that, here is a daily menu to chose from, cut out sweets, don't eat fat, the first few weeks are limited choices -- all this is the basis for weight watchers, south beach, etc. I liked the testimonies and I am sure the plan works because it is all the common sense that a plethora of diets before it have touted.
I am not saying it is a bad book, it just doesn't really contribute anything new to the guidelines of how to live at a healthy weight. The cover and description acts like all this info is ground-breaking. It IS a book full of good advice and guidelines, a revolutionary diet that will blow your mind and make dieting obsolete it is not.

Essential Eating: A Cookbook: Discover How to Eat, Not Diet Review

Essential Eating: A Cookbook: Discover How to Eat, Not Diet
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
People spend most of their adult lives searching for the right program to lose weight. I was no different.
I had tried every diet imaginable. The "no carb diet", (my cholesterol jumped up 23 points), "pre-package food diet", ( I gained 8 lbs. as soon as I went back to normal eating), "liquid diet,(won't even address what happened with that diet). Anyway, you get the picture.
Then one day, a friend introduced "Essential Eating" to me. This book answered all my questions and provided me with the answers I needed to live healthy, lose 27 lbs. and keep it off.
This is a wonderful program with delicious and easy to make recipes. You cook with "real organic food".
And the best thing is that it is not a diet. It is a way of life. I no longer have digestive or health related problems and feel better than I have felt in ages.
Over 2 years ago, I dropped 2 dress sizes, I dine out, have dinner parties and haven't gained a pound back.
Thank Essential Eating for changing my life.

This book outlines the Elimination Diet very well. As the above review stated, many recipes do contain oats, but I have found a version of gluten-free oats, Bob's Red Mill brand. Dr. David Katz's Flavor-Full Diet: Use Your Tastebuds to Lose Pounds and Inches with this Scientifically Proven Plan Review

Dr. David Katz's Flavor-Full Diet: Use Your Tastebuds to Lose Pounds and Inches with this Scientifically Proven Plan
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The core concept of The Flavor Full Diet is one that has apparently been researched for quite a while, but few of us know of - that of "sensory specific satiety". This refers to the role of flavor, and specifically, many different flavors (sweet, salty, bitter, etc) combined in one meal causing our hypothalamus to be over-stimulated. The net result is that too many flavors increase our appetite and leave us wanting to eat more food, even if our stomachs are full.
I've always wondered why I feel still feel hungry after eating several different courses, or at family gatherings during the holidays. Now I have the scientific reason behind my cravings and am learning how to curb my appetite by sticking closer to one "flavor category." I can still enjoy sweet foods, for example, I just try not to eat them after a salty meal.
Dr. Katz makes the concept very easy to understand and with his wife Catherine, have supplied some great recipes that are easy to make. Though I don't have kids, the recipes seem quite family friendly - and as the book doesn't limit what you eat, only how you eat it - I think this eating plan will be very attractive to people.
I deeply respect Dr. Katz' work, as he is one of a few leaders in this industry that is not just writing books on how to improve your health, but is advocating through research, policy and program initiatives to improve health across the nation. Thanks Dr. Katz for an excellent book!

Food for the Soul: Traditional Jewish Wisdom for Healthy Eating Review

Food for the Soul: Traditional Jewish Wisdom for Healthy Eating
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first part of this book, which is not exactly a cookbook, discusses food and the Jewish philosophy as related to eating. Then there is a long discussion of healthy diet (One of my non-Jewish friends out and out told me she thought traditional Jewish cuisine was probably one of the most unhealthy she'd ever run across. I thought about pot-roasted brisket or noodle kugel, laden with butter and eggs, and well, I didn't exactly jump up and protest.)
So who is this book directed to? I suppose it is aimed at anyone eating a glatt-kosher diet with traditional recipes from Bubbe (grandma) and who hasn't found a way to update these traditional foods.
Jewish cooking has kind of a split personality these days; the Eastern European foods come out of a diet of deprivation in a cold climate (or as a friend puts it, where cabbage boiled in duck fat is considered a green, leafy vegetable.) But more recently, Jewish cookbooks have added the Mediterranean/Middle Eastern foods and healthier foods of the Sephardic Jews, who eat chick peas, cous-cous, lentils, and more vegetables in general. The biggest culprits of fat-laden dishes may be pareve (non-meat or milk) and "milchig" or dairy-based dishes. When creating a menu, the foods are either meat-containing and neutral, or dairy-containing and neutral, which means no meat lasagna with cheese or pizza-with-pepperoni, by the way.
Some updated recipes in the back include Sephardic red lentil soup (rather like Turkish red lentil soup) and matzoh brei with asparagus (fried soaked flat cracker-like bread; matzoh can be used as a pasta substitute during Passover.) Also a matzoh lasagna. Hints are given on how to reduce fats and salt in traditional foods.
This is a thoughtful book, probably aimed at those who live in a community where traditional Kosher cooking rules supreme and where change must be weighed against a strong tradition going back for hundreds of years.

My wife is going through menopause and trying to decide whether or not she should take hormones. We are both concerned about the increased breast cancer risk connected with hormones.
I saw this book advertised on the Today show and bought it, thinking that if there was a natural, safe way to boost hormones then we should try it. I admit that I didn't think I would like tofu!
Imagine our surprise when we found recipes for mashed potatoes, ceasar salad and pesto...all without the cream and oil. Imagine our greaater surprise when we realized that we couldn't tell the difference between these recipes and those made with that fattening, unhealthy stuff.
Feelling great and eating well... without hormones... and without breast cancer worries.

Diabetes Meals on $7 a Day-or Less: How to Plan Healthy Menus without Breaking the Bank

This is a cookbook of great everyday recipes. My family is kind of meat and potatoes and doesn't like that "gourmet" stuff most cookbooks have. The peach cobble-up, apple crisp and chicken and dumplings are awesome and fairly simple to make. You might have to start out buying some of the lower fat or sugar substitute ingredients but most of the ingredients are regular pantry items. I definitely recommend this book if you are looking for some healthy recipe alternatives to old fashioned cooking. I usually buy a cookbook, use it once or twice and it winds up on a shelf, but not this one. I use it at least once a week and sometimes 3 or 4 times.
