IBS Relief: A Complete Approach to Managing Irritable Bowel Syndrome Review

IBS Relief: A Complete Approach to Managing Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Average Reviews:

This is the second edition of the same named book first published in 1999. The book seems to be written primarily from a dietitian's and psychologist's perspective so there are at times what I consider murky medical advice given, such as Healthy Eating and the concept of MyPyramid. The concept is that if you "stick" to your diet then you will be in control of your symptoms. I only wish! There are some good insights as to how powerful cognitive restructuring can be. One statement that made the book for me was "We recently did a study of the pain experienced by IBS sufferers versus Crohn's sufferers. We found that the pain of those with IBS was every bit as severe as the pain experienced by those with Crohn's disease. The difference between the two groups is: social support. Crohn's disease has more social support". This tells the authors and the readers that suffering with IBS can actually be greater than Crohn's because of the lack of support. To this end, the book does offer some valuable advice to talking to your doctor and learning to take control of your own health.

Lowfat Cooking for Dummies Review

Lowfat Cooking for Dummies
Average Reviews:

This is a very good source of information on low fat cooking. My family responded pleasently to many of the recipies although some were a little bland. The important thing is that this book teaches you how to make your own low fat dishes by substituting the stuff with high fat content in your favorite recipies with low fat ingredients. I especially liked the section devoted to learning and using herbs-- an important mainstay in any lowfat diet.

If a skimpy salad doused with a tasteless dressing is your idea of lowfat dining, hold on to your calorie counter. Lowfat cooking has come a long way. In fact, many of your high-calorie food favorites have an enticing, healthier equivalent in a lowfat version. Think chili. Potato pancakes. Or even cheesecake. It's true. If done right, bite for bite, lowfat cooking can be as generous in flavor as its high-fat counterpart. And once you (and your body) have begun to sample the benefits of a lowfat menu, chances are you'll turn lowfat cooking into a permanent lifestyle change.
With the help of Lynn Fischer, celebrated host of two TV cooking shows, Lowfat Cooking For Dummies helps you prepare meals worthy of a high-class health spa. In practically no time, you'll see how simple and fun it is to slenderize your kitchen pantry and get your cooking regimen in gear. From finding hidden fats to reading labels, the book gives you the skinny on:
Cholesterol, saturated fats, trans fatty acids—what they are and where they come from
What "lowfat," "fat-free," and "reduced fat" really mean
Tips on stocking a lowfat pantry—including what canned and packaged foods to keep (including pretzels, popcorn, chips, and cookies!)
What oils, condiments, and flavorings to use—including a table of oils indicating saturated fat content and a comprehensive list of herbs and their uses
Meat, poultry, fish, and eggs—tips on finding sources of lowfat red meat, what lean really means, and telling "good" eggs from "bad"

Plus Lowfat Cooking For Dummies brings you quickly up to speed on the joys of lowfat cooking—making your transition into a lowfat menu as delicious as it is painless. You'll reexperience old favorites like French Toast or a BLT or Oatmeal Raisin Cookies and discover how cutting calories in no way impairs taste. And you'll get a fresh reinvigorating take on traditionally healthy salads, as well as a host of entrees:
One-pot Soups and Casseroles—including Chicken Soup with Vegetables, Lentil Soup, Chili, and Pork and Garbanzo Bean Stew
Fish and shellfish—including Cod with Ginger-Orange Sauce, Herbed Mahi Mahi, and Shrimp and Crab Gumbo
Meat and poultry—including Meat Loaf, Sweet and Sour Pork, and Roast Chicken
Sandwiches—including Chicken Salad, Deviled Ham, Egg Salad, Feta Cheese Hamburgers, and Grilled Cheese

The book is chockfull of hints on how to turn usually high-fat fare like Hollandaise Sauce and White Sauce into something light and tasty. Desserts such as Strawberry Cheesecake and Peach and Blackberry Tart can, at last, be enjoyed as a guilt-free pleasure. Brimming with suggestions for healthy, lowfat eating on every page.

The New Good Fat, Bad Fat: Lower Your Cholesterol and Reduce Your Odds of a Heart Attack Review

The New Good Fat, Bad Fat: Lower Your Cholesterol and Reduce Your Odds of a Heart Attack
Average Reviews:

As a practicing cardiologist, I find diet education very challenging. Most books and pamphlets are overly complicated and leave patients confused about fat and cholesterol intake. Good Fat, Bad Fat takes a very simple practical approach which focuses on bad fat (saturated fat and trans fatty acid) intake. The information is easy to digest (pun intended) and very simple to implement. Unlike other fad approaches Drs Castelli and Griffin's advice is scientifically sound and based on solid research evidence as well as their personal experiences. This is a relatively short, easy read. I recommend it to all of my patients.

The Best-Kept Secrets of Healthy Cooking: Your Culinary Resource to Hundreds of Delicious Kitchen-Tested Dishes Review

The Best-Kept Secrets of Healthy Cooking: Your Culinary Resource to Hundreds of Delicious Kitchen-Tested Dishes

Most of my dessert recipes are Julia Child-style rich, but I recently got this book from the library to see how well I could make low-fat, whole-wheat baking work (I've been baking since I was 8 and use mostly my own recipes). Yesterday I made my usual white flour, high-fat, high-sugar banana bread for my entire office, which everyone loved. Today I made the whole wheat Brown Sugar Banana Bread from the bread section of this cookbook, without the nuts, and the ENTIRE office is raving about it! Everyone ate both kinds and declared this one just as good, if not better. I also got a number of her other cookbooks and have been VERY impressed with the recipes. Definitely a must-have for any kitchen.

Fat-free Baking Review

Fat-free Baking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sandra Woodruff, RN, is a nutritionist. Her book is informed by her personal experience that "healthy foods serve no purpose if they aren't eaten." Woodruff states that this "is the perfect book for those who want to reduce the fat in their diet, maximize their nutrition, and still enjoy great-tasting sweet treats."
After the introductory chapter on the importance of limiting fat, she presents 130 no- and low-fat recipes, often using creative fat substitutes such as fruit, yoghurt, buttermilk, corn syrup, jam, pruunes, sweet potatoes, and date sugar. (She's also mindful of salt and cholesterol.)
The recipes vary from Cherry Apple Scones (0.3 grams of fat per serving) to Buttermilk Chocolate Cake (1.3 g), pumpkin gingerbread (0.3 g), Pear and Walnut Bundt Cake (0.7 g), Plum Delicous Bran Muffins (0.7 g), and old favorites like oatmeal raisin cookies (0.3 g).
As you can see above, the fat content is indeed low, which sometimes sacrifices the flavor and texture found in higher-fat recipes. (Though I think one reviewer here went a little too far in criticizing the taste). This is a good beginner's book with a variety of recipes, and offers useful cooking tips, a list of stores selling low-fat ingredients, nice old-fashioned color photos, and an index. For a little more flavor (and perhaps a little more fat?), take a look at "Let Them Eat Cake." For those who want to eat their favorite sweet things with minimal fat, this is an excellent book.

I can't say enough good things about this book!! I bet I have a dozen low-fat or diet cookbooks collecting dust on my shelves because the recipes either don't taste good, they are too difficult to make, or I can't find the ingredients. Everything I have made from this cookbook has been fantastic and quick and easy, too. My husband loves what I cook now, and it is good for us, too. I am planning on purchasing her first Homestyle cookbook and getting rid of all the rest of my low fat cookbooks!

American Heart Association Low-Salt Cookbook, 3rd Edition: A Complete Guide to Reducing Sodium and Fat in Your Diet Review

American Heart Association Low-Salt Cookbook, 3rd Edition: A Complete Guide to Reducing Sodium and Fat in Your Diet
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Most Americans could benefit from lowering the sodium in their diets. Canned foods, processed foods, and fast food all contribute to the high fat, high salt diets that many of us eat. When faced with getting older or health issues, many people turn to their doctors for help with this American epidemic. But why not start now? If you have high blood pressure, are obese, or are just looking to improve your diet, this cookbook is a must for you!
Filled with tons of great recipes (and an additional 50 from the last addition), this book includes categories such as Appetizers & Snacks, Seafood, Meats, Soups, Vegetarian Entrees, and even Desserts. All of the recipes include complete nutrient information and include calories, fat (including saturated, polyunsaturated, and monosaturated), cholesterol, sodium, carbs, protein, calcium, potassium, and dietary exchanges. The only things missing from this addition are a spiral binding (to help it lay flat) and full color photos of each recipe.
Some of my family's favorites include: Blackberry & Balsamic Chicken, Grilled Sesame Chicken, Cowboy Steak with Portobello Mushrooms, Slow Cooker Beef and Red Beans, Baked Pork Chops with Apple Dressing, Braised Lentil and Vegetable Medley, Strawberry Orange Sauce, Chocolate Chip Banana Bread, Flan Caramel, Potato Skin Nachos, and Vegetable Beef Soup.
Enjoy!
