Joy's LIFE Diet: Four Steps to Thin Forever Review

Joy's LIFE Diet: Four Steps to Thin Forever
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This diet book is full of the advice you already know, while all true, I felt it was redundant. There are many diets out there that have the same script: eat this, don't eat that, here is a daily menu to chose from, cut out sweets, don't eat fat, the first few weeks are limited choices -- all this is the basis for weight watchers, south beach, etc. I liked the testimonies and I am sure the plan works because it is all the common sense that a plethora of diets before it have touted.
I am not saying it is a bad book, it just doesn't really contribute anything new to the guidelines of how to live at a healthy weight. The cover and description acts like all this info is ground-breaking. It IS a book full of good advice and guidelines, a revolutionary diet that will blow your mind and make dieting obsolete it is not.

Family Circle Eat What You Love & Lose: Quick and Easy Diet Recipes from Our Test Kitchen Review

Family Circle Eat What You Love and Lose: Quick and Easy Diet Recipes from Our Test Kitchen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had this book for 3 weeks now. I absolutely love this book! The diet plan and the story line for the 6 people who lost weight on this plan were great. But the one thing you will treasure this book for are those recipies! I have been using a similar eating plan on my own (3 meals and 2 snacks that equal about 1500 calories) but I was really struggling with great tasing dinners that didnt bump me over my calories allowed for dinner. I must admit that I primarily have used the dinner recipies, however I did enjoy every breakfast, lunch, and desert recipie I made as well. There are excellent versions of "comfort" foods, as well as new twists and alternative ways to prepare your standard 350 calorie meal or snacks. The ingredients are things that you can find in your local market as well. I havent eaten the same meal twice yet, although many are sure to be repeated.
The best compliment I can give to this book is that it is teaching me new recipies that I WANT to eat. I feel like Im not on a diet - but on to a new way of preparing and enjoying what I eat. I really recommend this book to any one interested in loosing weight. I have already lost 8 pounds and I feel like its really gone for good this time. This book is definitely for people who love to cook and want to learn how to do it in a way that is healthy and satisfying. It helped me to break out of my old cooking habits that were keeping my dinners way too fattening and my portion sizes way too big. You can use the diet plan in the book as a guide and tailor it to your life, what you like, and what works for you.
The only drawback was that alot of the recipies were for 6 servings so I did have to do a little math to scale it to my family. hehe But that wasnt a big price to pay when the result was a healthy and great tasting dinner that kept me on my target calories.

The New American Diet System Review

The New American Diet System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Dr. and Mrs Connor are, respectively, a world-class lipidologist who teaches at the Oregon Health Sciences University, and an amazingly competent dietician who cooks each recipe in this book 5-6 times herself. The Connors devised a method by which you may determine, by means of a single number, to what extent a particular food is good or bad for your arteries (foods ranging from fruits to Big Macs) - it is called the CSI or Cholesterol Saturated Fatty Acid Index. You use the book as a reference or as a cookbook: pages of foods are listed by category, with their CSI, and number of grams of fat; the recipes are well-written and tasty. The index is complete and easy to access. I use this book constantly for the education of my patients with hyperlipidemia.

Click Here to see more reviews about: The New American Diet System

In their breakthrough book, The New American Diet, the Connors developed a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet that dramatically reduces the risk of heart disease, cancer, stroke, and high blood pressure. Now, the overwhelming amount of products and information about cholesterol can be confusing. The New American Diet System takes us to the next step, providing a unique system that simplifies food choices for people with high cholesterol. Since both saturated fat and cholesterol in foods increase cholesterol in the blood, the Connors developed the CSI -- the Cholesterol-Saturated Fat Index -- the only complete measure of the true heart-healthiness of foods. This indispensable reference: -- makes food choices as simple as choosing from 1 to 10 (the lower the CSI, the better)-- provides easy-to-read charts rating hundreds of foods -- including many brand-name products-- eliminates confusion about high-fat, low-cholesterol foods (such as tropical oils) and low-fat, high-cholesterol foods (like shellfish)-- offers more than 300 recipes for tasty, low-CSI versions of your favorite dishes as well as suggested menus-- helps you compute your own CSI so you can set new dietary goals.A straightforward, comprehensive resource for anyone with high cholesterol, or anyone concerned about dietary fat, The New American Diet System is an essential part of every cholesterol-conscious kitchen.

Joy Bauer's Food Cures: Treat Common Health Concerns, Look Younger & Live Longer Review

Joy Bauer's Food Cures: Treat Common Health Concerns, Look Younger and Live Longer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are just starting to think about food as a "drug" in terms of how different foods can affect your mood, health and overall well-being, then this book is for you. Joy Bauer provides a good, basic overview of certain key foods and how they can keep you healthy or, if you have a particular health problem, how various foods can either calm or exacerbate your condition.
The format of the book is useful in that it suggests specific foods to seek out and to avoid for different health situations. For example, there is a chapter that discusses arthritis and delineates which foods are likely to help you control inflammation. There is another chapter on moods, with information on which foods tend to promote depression and which tend to promote a general sense of well-being.
Because of this "disease-oriented" format, however, the book does at times seem repetitive, as the same food (spinach, for instance) is discussed in many different places throughout the book. Thus, Food Cures is not very useful if you just want to check out a single food or group of foods, since you will have to skip from page to page and will probably end up reading the same information in several different places. Another thing that I found irritating is the large size of this publication. It is awkward to hold and quite heavy, even though it's paper bound.
Nevertheless, Food Cures is a solid reference guide written in easily understandable language for the average reader. It is worth buying if you don't have a lot of other nutrition books in your personal library. If, on the other hand, you already own a few books by people like Andrew Weil or Barry Sears, then I recommend that you pass on this one.

The Jack Sprat Low-Fat Diet: A 28-Day Heart-Healthy Plan You Can Follow the Rest of Your Life Review

The Jack Sprat Low-Fat Diet: A 28-Day Heart-Healthy Plan You Can Follow the Rest of Your Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Jack Sprat, Low Fat is the best healthy lifestyle book (including a very conscientious 28-day example complete with "wart hog days"!) that we have ever found (I am the mom, not the 12 year old!). The authors masterfully reveal the culprits that create un-healthy eating habits, and address the issues as they pertain to the informed middle-class American culture. They soundly convince the reader of the dire importance of eating right. Even with a health background, I find that the older we get, the less time there is to committ to even our best lofty intentions of healthy changes! Bryant Stamford and his co-auther R.N. Becca Coffin do NOT endorse or promote any quick-fix or product, but prevail with undisputable common sense and digestable physiological facts the importance of living healthfully. I applaud this book! If you are an informed individual, but still looking for that perfect healthy-lifestyle resource, then look no further. You will find this book in a class of its own. I hope that you will appreciate it as much as I do.

The Complete Guide to Healthy Cooking and Nutrition for College Students: How Not to Gain 17 Pounds at College Review

The Complete Guide to Healthy Cooking and Nutrition for College Students: How Not to Gain 17 Pounds at College
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, I'm not a college student. However, I do have a granddaughter that will be entering college this coming year so I felt I should review this book to see if it is something to suggest to her.
There are many pluses in this book. Although the USDA Food Pyramid is taught in school addressing it I believe is of importance. It serves as a basic reminder of what requirements are necessary to maintain a healthy body. As well, I felt the section on basic supplies is important. Many times college students are given a mish-mash of stuff to set up their first apartment. The list in this book can be used to check-off or to request from kind donors. Then there is that "first" trip to the grocery story. The tips given will prevent impulse buying.
The recipes are simple and the ingredients can be easily found in the pantry of the college student. If not, the trip to the local grocery store will find what is needed. The author also provides nutrition facts for each recipe.
Healthy choices is the bottom line to not gaining weight when first on your own. I commend J. Lucy Boyd for compiling this very important book for college students. I encourage buying one for every high school grad you know. It may be the best gift they receive.

College students face a number of stigmas when they first leave home and start living on their own. From not having their parents nearby to help clean and answer questions to being responsible for their own cooking and cleaning, the move from High School to College can be a bit of shellshock for many teenagers. Nowhere is this more apparent than in their eating habits, where many college students experience a great deal of downward digression. A recent 2009 study, published in the Nutrition Journal, found that one in four freshman gain at least 5 percent of their body weight, an average of about 10 pounds, during their first semester. All of this can be avoided though with healthy cooking and an eye for good choices. This book was written to provide every college student just learning to cook for themselves with viable, affordable alternatives to pizza and ramen. Every college student will learn the basics of what it is they need to be focusing on in their diets after leaving home. Starting with a basic discussion and introduction of nutrition and what the body needs on a daily basis, you will learn additionally which foods and nutrients are best for improving your mental acuity as well as your sleep each night. You will learn the importance of fluids and proper nightly sleep to supplement your diet and will be given a list of different ailments and problems that might develop should these issues be ignored or overlooked. Health professionals and college life experts have been interviewed and have provided their insight into what foods and lifestyle changes can be made for college students to keep them as healthy as possible. You will learn the basics of the right ingredients, what you should always avoid and why the occasional meal out will not kill you. You will learn how to avoid gaining all that extra weight and finally some of the top recipes currently available for quick, healthy cooking and how you can use these, regardless of whether you are stuck in a dorm room or your parents basement. The key to healthy living for college students is in a good diet, and this book will provide everything you need to maintain that.

Secrets of Good Carb / Low Carb Living Review

Secrets of Good Carb / Low Carb Living

I have most of Sandra Woodruff's books and I haven't found a bad recipe yet. This book is no exception. The California Club Wraps are to die for. They were so good that I made them several days in a row. I also tried the Chipotle Black Bean Chili, which was excellent. My husband is a picky eater and generally hates diet food, but he loves everything I've made from Sandra Woodruff cookbooks. I frequently serve her recipes to company and no one can guess they're low-fat and healthy. This particular book also has lots of common-sense advice on doing a low-carb diet and offers two versions, one for a quick start and another for a diet with more carbs. Both give two weeks of menus.

Restaurant Calorie Counter For Dummies (For Dummies (Health & Fitness)) Review

Restaurant Calorie Counter For Dummies (For Dummies (Health and Fitness))
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is an excellent compilation of nutritional information for food from almost every mainstream restaurant.
More than just calories, there is listing of fat, salt, etc.
The information can be used to infer the calorie count of dishes from restaurants that aren't listed. For example, you can look up a burger from Island's and use it to estimate the calorie count of similar burger at a local burger restaurant.
The book is small but thick and that makes it a bit heavy to take with you when you go out to eat. If you are meticulous about what you eat and want to plan ahead before you go to the restaurants, this is a great book to have in your collection.

May All Be Fed: 'a Diet For A New World : Including Recipes By Jia Patton And Friends Review

May All Be Fed: 'a Diet For A New World : Including Recipes By Jia Patton And Friends
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With a more personal style than Diet For a New America, John Robbins teaches us about the production and consumption of meat, chicken, fish, dairy and eggs. What I like about this book is how he comes from a spiritual rather than statistics-only perspective. Robbins encourages us to remember the simple health-nourishing habits like giving thanks and chewing your food slowly, those simple things we can easily forget in our modern ironic eat-quick-so-you-can-make-it-to-yoga-class lifestyles. I especially like the "What You Can Do" section, inspiring readers to educate themselves and others, giving tips on shopping/ cooking healthy foods and a listing of resources.
Jia Patton's recipes make the book for me. I had the privilege of taking some of her cooking classes with gourmet vegan food which melts your taste buds in its richness and diversity of flavor. In May All Be Fed, Jia abolishes stereotypes of vegan food being bland. Every time I have made the "Cream of Broccoli Soup" for friends they ask for the recipe and love it, deservedly so, with its creamy cashew base. The "Spinach Tofu Quiche" is wonderful too (people don't seem to miss the dairy); the "Plum Cobbler" feels healthy yet satisfies the sweet tooth going down. I recommend this book for anyone who is open to learning about the vegan diet, and who enjoys cooking and eating fulfilling and jazzy meals.
