Family Circle Eat What You Love & Lose: Quick and Easy Diet Recipes from Our Test Kitchen Review

Family Circle Eat What You Love and Lose: Quick and Easy Diet Recipes from Our Test Kitchen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had this book for 3 weeks now. I absolutely love this book! The diet plan and the story line for the 6 people who lost weight on this plan were great. But the one thing you will treasure this book for are those recipies! I have been using a similar eating plan on my own (3 meals and 2 snacks that equal about 1500 calories) but I was really struggling with great tasing dinners that didnt bump me over my calories allowed for dinner. I must admit that I primarily have used the dinner recipies, however I did enjoy every breakfast, lunch, and desert recipie I made as well. There are excellent versions of "comfort" foods, as well as new twists and alternative ways to prepare your standard 350 calorie meal or snacks. The ingredients are things that you can find in your local market as well. I havent eaten the same meal twice yet, although many are sure to be repeated.
The best compliment I can give to this book is that it is teaching me new recipies that I WANT to eat. I feel like Im not on a diet - but on to a new way of preparing and enjoying what I eat. I really recommend this book to any one interested in loosing weight. I have already lost 8 pounds and I feel like its really gone for good this time. This book is definitely for people who love to cook and want to learn how to do it in a way that is healthy and satisfying. It helped me to break out of my old cooking habits that were keeping my dinners way too fattening and my portion sizes way too big. You can use the diet plan in the book as a guide and tailor it to your life, what you like, and what works for you.
The only drawback was that alot of the recipies were for 6 servings so I did have to do a little math to scale it to my family. hehe But that wasnt a big price to pay when the result was a healthy and great tasting dinner that kept me on my target calories.

Weight Watchers New Complete Cookbook Momentum Program Edition Review

Weight Watchers New Complete Cookbook Momentum Program Edition

I gave it a 3 star review because ii is IDENTICAL to the 2006 edition. I have just sat and compared the indexes for both books and so far have found NO difference. In fact, the cover picture for this edition is the picture from page 241 in the 2006 edition.
However, if you are looking for a good Betty Crocker meets WW type cookbook, then either edition (since they are the same) will fit the bill nicely and be a good addition to any WW'ers kitchens :)

Fast Food Fix: 75+ Amazing Recipe Makeovers of Your Fast Food Restaurant Favorites Review

Fast Food Fix: 75+ Amazing Recipe Makeovers of Your Fast Food Restaurant Favorites
Average Reviews:

I ordered this book after seeing an excerpt in Women's Health. I've been really surprised by the quality of the recipes (and the fat content and calories of the originals!) The first thing I made was the Big Mac sauce to dress up some burgers. It was yummy... and tasted just like the original. To be honest, you could easily put this stuff on anything... including veggie burgers.... and it would taste great. This book even inspired me to purchase my first kitchen scale. You don't need it to do the recipes, but in reading how she recreated the fast food favorites I thought I could do the same with other restaurant favs. My only complaint is that I still can't find a potato curler anywhere (online or off) to make the Curly Fries... unless it's part of a $50+ garnishing set. I'm thinking about taking a 3 month break from all fast food restaurants for myself and my family and resorting to this book instead. Note: You can find lots of these recipes online for free if you'd like to try one. But I think once you have, you'll buy the book!

Weight Watchers New Complete Cookbook Review

Weight Watchers New Complete Cookbook

I got this for my wife as a Christmas gift and she really liked it for a few different reasons. For one, it has the updated program information in it and goes along those lines, so she liked that. It also is set up nice with good strong pages and sort of a spiral book set-up. One review I read called this book more of a folder, which I have to totally disagree. This thing is about 1.5 inches thick and is well made. I have no doubt this can survive a lot of cooking in the kitchen. I am not the one that does most of the cooking so I can't comment totally on some aspects, but it was well received and seems to be the right price. I think I paid around $15 on this site.

Hungry Girl: Recipes and Survival Strategies for Guilt-Free Eating in the Real World Review

Hungry Girl: Recipes and Survival Strategies for Guilt-Free Eating in the Real World
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In my years of subscribing to the HG Web site and now using this book, it has occurred to me that there are many different philosophies of dieting and weight loss/maintenance. There are WAY more than two, but for the purposes of this review I am going to boil it down:
1. Eat super healthy, nonprocessed, preferably organic foods. Make whole grains, fruits and veggies the mainstays of your diet. Severely curtail fats, oils and sugar. When you want to indulge, enjoy one small portion of something "real" -- i.e. one sliver of chocolate cake, one square of dark chocolate, one cookie, or the like. [And exercise.] People who follow this approach are probably more likely to never snack between meals (or eat only fruits and veggies as snacks), avoid "100-calorie-packs," eschew artificial sweeteners and diet sodas, etc.
2. Follow the above philosophy to the extent that your time and lifestyle allow, but lean on processed low-cal foods to (a) save cooking/prep time and (b) enjoy modified versions of the "junky" foods you feel deprived of when you are dieting or have to eat low-cal in order to maintain your weight. [And exercise.] People who take this approach are probably the lion's share of 100-calorie-pack purchasers, more likely to use artificial sweeteners, drink diet sodas, and so on.
What you have to understand about HG author Lillen is that her Web site and book are tools for those who adopt approach #2. She states repeatedly that she isn't a nutritionist or a dietitian, and she makes no claim for the "healthfulness" of her recipes. They do lean on processed ingredients and tend to contain a lot of sodium, artificial sweetener and chemical ingredients. What they offer is a similar flavor experience to the very high-cal foods lots of people like, with much lower calorie and fat counts (and often more fiber as well).
But for those who would knock this approach (while you certainly retain the moral high ground as organic eating becomes something akin to spiritual cleanliness in more and more people's minds), please bear in mind that for some of us, our eating is always going to be a trade-off in terms of risk. I speak from experience as someone who has maintained a 100-lb. weight loss for over 10 years. For whatever reason, my body processes food in such a way that I gain weight exceptionally easily. I have to be CONSTANTLY vigilant about what I am putting in my mouth and how I am counterbalancing it with exercise. If I relax my vigilance for even a couple of days, it shows up on my body. As a (reformed) compulsive overeater I struggle with eating just one cookie, tiny sliver of cake, etc., every couple of weeks. (Yes, it is true, I would often rather have a larger portion of something that actually isn't AS good as the real thing.) And if you think that this behavior is not incredibly challenging to sustain for a lifetime, you just don't know whereof you speak.
So personally, while I certainly do my best to eat truly healthy, skip sugar, keep fat and meat intake to a minimum, and eat lots of whole grains and fruits/veggies, I salute HG for giving me recipes that allow me to "let my hair down" and enjoy some fun foods along with the rest of the world, without having to lie awake at night and worry about what I ate for lunch.
For the record, among my favorite HG recipes are the butternut squash fries, the turkey reuben and the fettucine "girl-fredo."

Before I purchased this book, I was so excited from all the reviews, only come to find out that 90% of the recipes in the book call for some sugar substitute of some kind, which gives me headaches. So if you are thinking of buying this book but don't enjoy artificial sweeteners, DON'T BUY IT. But, if you don't mind them, go for it.

Weight Watchers Chocolate Cake, 6-Count Box (Pack of 6) Review

Weight Watchers Chocolate Cake, 6-Count Box (Pack of 6)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Weight Watchers Chocolate Cakes are good tasting and even somewhat filling, but each one is very small. These are very rich and chocolaty so they might just be enough to satisfy your cravings. The first ingredient is sugar and each one has about 80 Calories and 12g Net Carbs (9g from sugar) so they really do need to be taken in moderation by serious dieters and possibly even avoided by most diabetics (like me).
Recommended, with the above caveats.

Vitalicious Chocolate Fig Vita Tops, 2-Ounce Units (Pack of 24) Review

Vitalicious Chocolate Fig Vita Tops, 2-Ounce Units (Pack of 24)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm so glad I ordered the chocolate fig Vita Tops - they're very tasty. They're just like the deep chocolate Vita Tops, but with little chunks of figs sprinkled throughout. The fig taste is noticeable but mild, and the figs add a nice bit of sweet, chewiness. I love all of the chocolate Vita products - the deep chocolate tops (and muffins), the peanut butter chip tops, the triple chocolate chunk tops, and the Vita brownies. The corn Vita Tops are decent. The only varieties I didn't care for were the cran-bran and the banana nut. If you're going to try a Vita product for the first time, go with one of the chocolate flavors.

Vitalicious Multi Bran Vita Tops , 2-Ounce Units (Pack of 24) Review

Vitalicious Multi Bran Vita Tops , 2-Ounce Units (Pack of 24)
Average Reviews:

These are my favorite of the Vita Tops! They are tender and fluffy, and there are raisins inside. I like to put them in the toaster on a med-light setting--basically just enough to warm them and make the top a tad crispy.
You have to keep these in the freezer and take them out one at a time. I'll usually take one out at night, and it will be thawed by morning.
This makes a great breakfast, and at only 1 WW point, it makes a great start for the day! I'll be ordering more when my current supply runs low.

Average Reviews:

I've made these brownies several times and they are awesome :) Are they sweet like a sugar laden brownie? No, they are more like the other vitamuffins in flavor as in they are not super sweet. I like them because they are good and full of nutrition while helping me stay on track with my diet. I would recommend getting the mixes, whether its the brownie mix or the muffin mix because they are *Significantly* cheaper that way. I can't afford anything from Vitalicious unless it's the mixes. Their prices are crazy high for my budget.
I will buy these again and again.

Average Reviews:

I was very disappointed with this Krusteaz Banana Nut Muffin Mix. I've used this brand many times and have never been disappointed before but this muffin mix is HEAVY and almost tasteless. The banana and walnut flavors should stand out but they don't with this mix. Don't get me wrong.....there is nothing wrong with it but it just does not bake and taste like other Krusteaz mixes that I've tried so my anticipation has tainted my view of this product. I suggest you try a box from the local stores before actually buying a case from Amazon. You may love it or, like me, don't find that it bakes into a very good muffin.

Vitalicious Blue Bran Vita Tops , 2-Ounce Units (Pack of 24) Review

Vitalicious Blue Bran Vita Tops , 2-Ounce Units (Pack of 24)
Average Reviews:

I initially tried the cranbran Vita Tops from Vitalicious and, although I really like them, I found them to be a little sweet (from the loads of cranberries) for my morning. I just tried the bluebran and, oh my goodness, these are so wonderful! I went directly to the Vitalicious web site and just ordered a variety pack of the 4oz muffins that also includes applebran...can't wait to try them as well. You should store these in the freezer and then pop them in the toaster or microwave for a warm, moist, filling and nutritious breakfast or snack. If you eat them without warming or toasting, they are a little bit dry. You can't go wrong with all of this wholesome goodness (100 cal, high fiber, 5g protein, 50% daily requirement of several vitamins & minerals & no refined sugars...no nuts for those of you who can't eat them)!

Vitalicious VitaMuffin Mix, BlueBran, 13.5-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 3) Review

Vitalicious VitaMuffin Mix, BlueBran, 13.5-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 3)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a *BIG* fan of the Vitalicious VitaTop products ("maximum nutrition for minimum calories")--especially the Deep Chocolate version--so I was eager to try the BlueBran mix. But I have to say I was disappointed with this product. Don't be fooled by the photo on the box, people! The "blue bran" name is misleading--I found approximately 3 freeze-dried blueberry 'chips' in my batter. You will definitely need to add your own fresh or frozen blueberries to the mix, otherwise you'll just have plain old bran muffins.
Even after I added fresh blueberries to my batter, the end product was not very good--it was gooey and bland, with a weird after-taste. My family usually inhales the Vitalicious products, but these are still in the freezer.
I have two boxes of the mix left, so I'm going to try adding chunks of apple to the next batch, along with some cinnamon to give it some flavor, and see if I get a better result. Bottom line: Skip these and go for the Vitalicious Deep Chocolate mix.

I found these muffins in my local supermarket about six months ago. They were easy to make and they come in two more flavors however Banana Nut is the best. Considering the fiber I thought they would taste nothing like muffins but I was pleasantly surprised "no tree bark here". Needless to say I was not able to find Banana Nut flavor at any supermarkets any longer but Amazon "of course" has a pack of 4. I would definitely recommend this product you get the fiber you need in a way you can enjoy it.
