The Good Enough to Eat Breakfast Cookbook Review

The Good Enough to Eat Breakfast Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having seen a profile of the restaurant and its owner on national t.v. some time ago, I was eager to visit this place and taste what everyone was raving about. Now that we've taken that maiden trip, are we glad we did! The recipes in the book include every kind of yummy breakfast treat you can imagine. (The coconut and chocolate chip Peter Paul Pancakes are my fave!) If you have the time and patience to fuss over breakfast and don't just want to grab an apple and cup of coffee as you race out the door, this is a great way to enjoy Breakfast as a main meal of the day, and treat your family to something special too. The recipes are straightforward and easy to follow. The author (who is also the restaurant owner)has a friendly and easy to read style and it makes the cookbook more than just a step by step instructional. If you are ever in New York City, stop by this place on the Upper East Side and see for yourself why Carrie Levin has earned such a great reputation in her business.

The Collard Patch Review

The Collard Patch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Collard Patch brought back a lot of memories, put a BIG smile
on my face, and "taught this old dog a few new tricks!"
Growing up on a tobacco farm in North Carolina, collards were a
staple in my community. For 20 cents we could buy enough seeds to
plant enough collards to last us all year. Yet, we only fixed
them one or two ways... mainly boiled or fried.
I only wish that we'd had this book when I was growing up. I
never DREAMED of collards as a dessert :-)
Since my whole family loves collards, my daughters, now starting
families of their own, will get copies as Christmas presents.
I highly recommend The Collard Patch to anyone who loves
cooking good, healthy, down-home food.

Breakfast in Bed California Cookbook: The Best B and B Recipes from California (Breakfast in Bed Cookbook) Review

Breakfast in Bed California Cookbook: The Best B and B Recipes from California (Breakfast in Bed Cookbook)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I use recipes from this book over and over again. This ranks right up there with "The Joy of Cooking" in terms of practicality and ease and taste. I've never had one recipe fail, they are all delicious and easy to make. If I go on an out of town trip, I make something from this book to take along for breakfast, for example the oatmeal raisin scones are delicious and easy to take along in a tupperware container tucked in a suitcase. Or if I go camping with friends I'll make some muffins. One time when some friends had a moving party and we met early in the morning, I made "Eggs for a Crowd" and it was a big hit! Great idea for a cookbook, as who knows more about breakfast foods than B&B's?! Plus, they need to have recipes that are original yet easy to make. I highly recommend this book!

James McNair's Breakfast Review

James McNair's Breakfast
Average Reviews:

Most of McNair's recent books feature the photo-on-each-page format with gorgeous photos by Patricia Brabant. Not so this one. It's still nice, but if, like me, you really enjoy seeing the amazing presentation of attactive food coordinated with lush garnishes and beautiful china/linens/silver, then this book may dissappoint.
And as with all of McNair's recipes, if you're watching your fat or cholesterol, there's not a lot here for you unless you're prepared to do some heavy modification.

ExtraVeganZa: Original Recipes from Phoenix Organic Farm Review

ExtraVeganZa: Original Recipes from Phoenix Organic Farm
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I know, you're wondering about whether you should get this book, since it doesn't have many reviews yet and this is the first one. But let me tell you, I have over 150 cookbooks, and this one ranks in the best of them. It doesn't matter if you are a vegan, omnivore, or lacto-ovo-vegetarian - you will enjoy these recipes if you like vegetables, healthy grains, nuts, and legumes, the occasional sweet, and new and inventive ways to cook your favorite foods. Vegan foods, luckily, can be eaten by anyone - so just kick back and enjoy; this book makes it especially easy. Some recipes are wheat-free and others, like the vegetable mochi casserole, are gluten-free. The casserole is delicious, and the lemon sesame kale is my new favorite way to eat it. The Thai noodle salad is one of the best Thai dishes I have ever made. My boyfriend and I have greatly enjoyed these recipes, and I am confident you will, too.

Also unique is the philosophy of the book. An important milestone in vegan cuisine, it incorporates the larger scale vision of growing your own food or at least knowing where it comes from, and creating a more sustainable lifestyle. At the author's organic farm and B&B, they grow as much food as possible for themselves, their guests, farm workers and the local community.

The Big Book of Breakfast: Serious Comfort Food for Any Time of the Day Review

The Big Book of Breakfast: Serious Comfort Food for Any Time of the Day
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A great cookbook idea for a novice, new couple, or serious breakfast lover. It will encourage people to spend more time with a good breakfast, and perhaps with each other!
If you don't eat eggs, this book offers delicious alternatives (hot oatmeal with nuts, etc., meats, breads, even tofu dishes). If you love eggs, this book is a rich resource. I appreciate that in addition to recipes to be made while everyone is waiting (scrambled eggs), she includes recipes to make the night before, make a few hours before, etc.
This is an attractive cookbook with very easy-to-follow recipes and instructions. Her 'serve with' suggestions are for recipes also included in the book.
I wish it were hard-cover, because the larger width isn't ideal for reading other than on a table or countertop, and it has no photos, but the descriptions are tempting and I'm headed to the kitchen to try a few new recipes.

This is the 6th book in the William Sonoma Collection that I have purchased. Each book has been a triumph in terms of the recipes included in the book. The Breakfast edition was no exception! I have tried 4 of the recipes so far and have found them all easy to make and superb in taste. I have not found a recipe in any of this collection of cookbooks that I wouldn't make again! I'm very statisfied. I wish they would make more of them!

Stonewall Kitchen Breakfast Review

Stonewall Kitchen Breakfast

This is a cute little breakfast book and fantastic deal for the money. One of the nice things about this book is that there is a close-up photo for each recipe. This really helps with presentation sometimes. The recipes are all simple to make and rarely require hard-to-find ingredients.
I'm a big egg person so enjoyed many of these recipes such as Eggs Baked in Pancetta Cups and Provencal-Style Baked Eggs. And they have all the standard egg dishes too such as Scrambles, Omelets, , Frittatas, Benedicts, Huevos Rancheros, and Quiches, but each with nice new twist (e.g., Lobster with your Benes). There are also great tips on the basics of making omelets, poaching eggs, etc.
There are chapters with recipes for scones, muffins, coffee cake, granola, french toast, pancakes, fruit dishes, drinks, etc. And there even is a chapter on side dishes to accompany the main courses. I recently tried the Breakfast Corn Fritters, which is a variation on the pancakes and just loved them. It really is a complete breakfast book worth owning if you're a big breakfast fan like me.

I'm so excited Vegan Brunch is out! It's bright and colorful with tons of mouth-watering pictures and innovative, grocery store friendly recipes that will make you want to get up early on Sunday and make a huge breakfast for the whole neighborhood.
Here's what I've tried so far and LOVED:
Chesapeake Tempeh Cakes - these are crazy good and will turn anyone intoa tempeh lover
Omelets - You'll have to seek out black salt for these, but trust me, it is worth it!
Scrambled Tortillas - a perfectly spicy Mexican breakfast with potatoes and corn tortillas
Classic Broccoli Quiche - the secret ingredient is cashews, which make it uber creamy and delicious
Gingerbread Waffles - easy and perfect for a Sunday morning
Lemon Pepper Tofu - quick and easy, it's my go-to tofu recipe
Blueberry Ginger Spelt Muffins - a sweet hearty muffin you'll want to take to work with you everyday
Tomato Rosemary Scones - taste really fancy, but only take a few minutes to throw together.
I promise you will love these, too!

Baked Explorations: Classic American Desserts Reinvented Review

Baked Explorations: Classic American Desserts Reinvented
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I loved the first Baked cookbook and bought this one when I saw it in a bookstore a week ago. I've already had occasion to try out a couple recipes and WOW they're great! The Grasshopper Bars were awesome, as is the Caramel Apple Cake made for a friend whose birthday was this past week. We also tried the malted waffles (I'd been looking for a recipe for these -- yay!) and they were great.
The one problem I've run across is in editing. For example, in the grasshopper bars, one of the butter measurements is given first in tablespoons, with the stick equivalent in parenthesis, while another butter measurement is opposite. If I weren't paying attention that could have caused a goofup.
Then I was thinking about making the speculaas, and read through the recipe/instructions. The instructions mention cardamom, which is not listed in the recipe. A careful editor would have caught that. I haven't done an in-depth read of many more recipes, but this is slightly disappointing. But only slightly. If I could, I'd rate this a 4.5. Very fun recipes overall, and inventive combinations of flavors/textures/etc. Two thumbs up!

Matt Lewis and Renato Poliafito's 2008 Baked was published to national critical acclaim and raved about across the blogosphere. Since then, their profile has gotten even bigger, with continued praise from Oprah and Martha Stewart; product availability in every Whole Foods across the U.S.; and a new bakery in Charleston, South Carolina, with even more traffic than their original Brooklyn location.
Now, in Baked Explorations, the authors give their signature "Baked" twists to famous desserts from across the country. Here is their take on our most treasured desserts: Banana Cream Pie, Black & White Cookies, Mississippi Mud Pie, and more—from the overworked to the underappreciated. Readers will love this collection of 75 recipes from breakfast treats to late-night confections and everything in between. Praise for Baked Explorations:"They might look like another pair of fresh-faced Brooklynites (retro tie and mustache? check), but Matt Lewis and Renato Poliafito, the owners of the Baked sweet shops in Brooklyn and Charleston, are media-savvy butter fiends . . . Those whoopie pies? Four sticks of buttery fun. Oh to be young, decadent and baked in Brooklyn." -The New York Times "Lewis and Poliafito take on more underappreciated desserts, giving beloved treats like black-and-white cookies and whoopie pies a modern makeover." -New York Daily News

The Breakfast Book Review

The Breakfast Book
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This durable classic was written by one of the better known names among American cookbook authors, who apprenticed with James Beard and supervised the rewrite of the Fannie Farmer cookbook. The book endures by providing a super coverage of a neglected culinary subject. While there are dozens of books with chapters on breakfast dishes, there are only a small handful of books devoted exclusively to breakfast written in the last 20 years. This book, neatly typeset, edited, and designed by the Alfred A. Knopf crew, should grace your shelf for a long time, even if your space is limited.
This book among my favorite types of cookbooks to own, as it gives you easy access to a great number of recipes on a single subject. This is even better than books on fish or red meat or potatoes or chicken, as it covers a wide range of recipes for all flavors available to a single meal. And, Ms. Cunningham does touch all the bases. Her chapter titles are:
Yeast breads such as American White Bread.
Toasts, French Toast, and Breakfast Sandwiches.
Quick Breads such as biscuits, cornbread, scones, muffins, and fruit breads.
Cereals, hot such as oatmeal and corn, such as granola
Doughnuts and Fritters
Griddling, as in pancakes and waffles
Eggs, as in boiled, omelets, frittatas, souffles, baked, scrambled, poached, fried, and so on
Fruit Fixing, as in applesauce, poached apples, stuffed pears, fresh juices, rhubarb, pineapple, mango, etc.
Potatoes, as in oven fries, hash browns, potato pancakes, potato bacon pie, and potato custard
Meat and Fish as in steak, chipped beef, corned beef hash, bacon, ham, fresh fish, fish hash, and salt cod
Custards and Puddings, an extension of eggs or cereals, depending on how you look at them
Cookies, Pies, and Cakes as in yum, yum, cookies for breakfast
Condiments, as in jellies, jams, caramel, syrups, and salsas
Breakfast Beverages as in tea, coffee, hot chocolate ya da ya da ya da
Breakfast Menus
Some reviewers have stated that her recipes are easy. While this may be true of most topics above, it is not true of yeast breads. Even the simplest recipes, and Cunningham's are relatively simple, require a modest amount of skill and a fair amount of time, so I must say that Cunningham is more concerned with good recipes and completeness than she is with speed.
While Miss Marion covers all the bases, some are covered a lot better than others. The yeast bread chapter has only a few samples and an exceptionally picky person may feel that the book suffers by not having a brioche recipe, as this is a perfect ingredient for French Toast. I will only point this out and generally suggest that if you are serious about making bread, check out either `Baking with Julia' as an excellent general introduction to baking or Rose Levy Beranbaum's `The Bread Bible' for the straight skinny on everything bread. For the very best Southern biscuits, check out Nick Malgieri's `How to Bake'.
The coverage of eggs and toast and condiments and cakes and custards and puddings and pancakes is terrific. This represents the strongest reason to own a copy of this book, if you are especially fond of leisurely weekend breakfasts or brunches. There are dozens of recipes for things I knew people did actually eat for breakfast, but never came close to having them myself or even seeing them on restaurant menus.
As with the bread and biscuit recipes, do not believe Ms. Cunningham has absolutely covered all bases in chapters such as Meats and Beverages. She does not always cover the most common recipe for a dish. A perfect example is her creamed chipped beef recipe that includes mushrooms. A classic recipe would not include mushrooms and would include Worcestershire sauce and a little cayenne.
This aside, this book packs an enormous punch with 288 recipes for a list price of $20 and an Amazon discounted price of $14.
Very highly recommended, especially for a modest budget and a big appetite for big breakfasts.

Clinton St. Baking Company Cookbook: Breakfast, Brunch and Beyond from New York's Favorite Neighborhood Restaurant
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
See those pancakes on the cover? I made those! They turned out just as beautifully. A word of warning though, I would cut this recipe in half unless you have a football team lurking around. I used all of the batter and froze the remaining pancakes. One minute in the microwave and they tasted almost better than the fresh made ones. I have read about other cooks doing this with pancakes, but never tried it myself. I put them in zip lock bags with wax paper in between. Now whenever I want pancakes, I just put a couple in the microwave for about 45 seconds. My son is still talking about how good the maple butter was and it was quite simple to make. I also put aside some of that in the refrigerator for use later.
The recipes are all really good and I am working my way through the book. I found that they were quite easy to follow. All of the direction are clear and concise. The ingredients are easy to find, so no worries there like some other cookbooks. This is definitely a keeper for me.

Mad About Muffins: Uniquely Delicious Muffins Everyone Can Make

This is a fantastic book for anyone looking for both standard and interesting muffin recipes.
The recipes are given full colour photographs with very easy-to-follow step-by-step guidelines. There is even a section at the beginning actually showing each of the basic steps needed to bake muffins from scratch.
With this book you can go from just ingredients to delicious mouth watering muffins in under an hour (including cooling time so you don't scorch you mouth!) with very little effort.
The variety of recipes in this book is fantastic, with some very "out there" savoury ones that I probably will never try, but if you want to impress your friends, then go ahead!
I would heartily recommend this book even to a relative cooking novice, you just have to follow the instructions. And for the price, you really can't beat it.
