Average Reviews:

This is another of Linda's wonderful cookbooks. She hits the mark with saving time, something that all of us need to do in our hectic world, yet still creating delicious recipes.
I have followed Linda's website, [...], for years. It's great to have a lot of her recipes in a printed form (please, About, publish another one!!).
Some highlights of this book in a nutshell: Every margin has incredibly useful tips and information that are related to the adjacent recipe. She includes some pertinent questions (perhaps from her web readers?) and answers as well. My favorite recipes include the Gourmet Grilled Cheese, Norwegian Toast (like biscotti - heaven with coffee in the morning!), Carmelized Onion Dip (started in the slow cooker), Freezer Waffles (the kids love 'em--I even sneak in a little wheat germ), and the Grilled Seafood pizza which is a hit with my Bunco friends. All of them are very quick and Linda knows just where to cut corners on time, never sacrificing flavor. I can't wait to try more of these recipes. Meanwhile, I will stayed tuned to her website!!
Don't miss the back of the book with Linda's recommendations for her favorite websites and cookbooks.

The Secrets of Jesuit Breadmaking Review

The Secrets of Jesuit Breadmaking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When you ponder the history of breadmaking, just consider the continuous creativity derived from mixing flour and water. As author Brother Rick Curry, S.J., says, "I'm reminded of the simplicity...A little flour and water and some other wholeseome ingredients make an infinte number of breads".
"The Secrets of Jesuit Breadmaking" is a delightful collection of spiritual stories and easy to understand bread recipes. Building on the mystique of the Jesuit religious order, Brother Curry kneads the spirtual life and writings of the order's founder Saint Ignatius Loyola into the recipe collection. Indeed, this colection might be particularly interesting for those curious to know more about the Jesuits without having to read a long historical account. At first, I was leary of the large number bread recipes presented because my success with breadmaking was non-existent. I thought, "Why should I buy a book about breadmaking when I've never been able to get the dough to the first rise"? Nevertheless, I wanted to try Brother Curry's recipe for Irish Soda Bread, cooked without yeast, so I purchased the book. Of course, I could have simply copied the recipe without buying the book, but my religious side thought this was being disingenuous. Now, I'm so glad I made the investment because reading the recipes is just as much fun as baking them. Many recipes do not require using yeast, a relief for my breakmaking anxiety. As I tired several different recipes, I became more confident to try at least one yeast recipe. Finally, voila, like a miracle, I actually make O'Brien's Oatmeal Bread! Obviously, I'm now a convert to Brother Curry's recipes and, of course, I intend to try several more recipes as my breakmaking skills are tested. I already have several handwritten notes in the margins of this book documenting my own experiences with the recipes. Thank you Brother Curry and and also to Brother John O'Brien, who was a "vigorous" teacher of Latin at Gonzaga Prep in Spokane Washington when Curry met him and learned his namesake Oatmeal Bread recipe. This is a good book for those needing to develop more faith in their breadmaking ability. If you are already an expert breadmaker, Curry's collection is likely to sharpen the spiritual side of your God given talents.

The Moms' Guide to Meal Makeovers: Improving the Way Your Family Eats, One Meal at a Time Review

The Moms' Guide to Meal Makeovers: Improving the Way Your Family Eats, One Meal at a Time
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These recipes are quick, easy, good, and best of all, a little more adventurous than your normal "family" cookbooks filled with chicken nuggets and pasta. I am not one to plan a week's meals ahead, and I love that I can open this book and find something great to make out of what I have on hand. I've made at least 15 of the recipes and every one was great. The prep time estimates seem to be pretty accurate. Our family in general likes things a little more spicy than most, so some recipes were a little bland but I just add a little more seasoning if that happens. I think they would probably be fine for most people, especially kids.
I think the authors are right on the mark with their advice on kids trying new foods, no "yuck!"s etc. Their philosophy is similar to our own house rules, and as a result my boys (3 and 7) are great eaters. I had the pleasure of meeting the authors at a bookstore signing, and I was very impressed with their knowledge, sensibility, and friendliness!

Recipe Hall of Fame Quick & Easy Cookbook: Winning Recipes from Hometown America (Quail Ridge Press Cookbook Series.) Review

Recipe Hall of Fame Quick and Easy Cookbook: Winning Recipes from Hometown America (Quail Ridge Press Cookbook Series.)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had purchased this a few weeks ago.
I work a lot of hours and I have a 2hour daily commute.
I decided I was tired of blah foods and wanted to do something about it.
So, I purchased some new cookbooks.
This one is one that I have been using the most.
I made a Chili Soup, Easy Brown Rice, Beef Stew, a Baked Rice dish.
At tops my prep time was around 10 minutes.
There is a lot to recommend in this book.
The recipes are easy and the ingredients are things that you would likely have in your cabinets or refrigerator.
They list where each recipe is from.
(As far as the state they got the recipe from)
The editor sometimes list additional things for the recipe.
Like in one recipe where it said Tomato Juice.
They added at the bottom that V8 was just as good.
Easy to read.
Sometimes you had 2-3 recipes on one page.
In the back of this book they list every cookbook they researched and got recipes from.
I have in addition to this their Best of Best Florida Cookbook.
They also have in the very back of the book before the index a couple of selections.
One is Equivalent.
Like 1 pound of flour would be 4 1/2 cups.
Then they have another area for measurements.
They also have Substitutions.
Lke 1 sliced cook bacon=1 tablespoon of bacon bits.
They give you Oven-to-Crockpot Cooking Time Conversions.
Pan sizes for baking.
Very good information and has made cooking much more enjoyable for me.
So far my partner has said only one thing about something I cooked and it was because *I* made cooked something too long and it was dryer than it should had been.

I like to fix unusual dishes on Sunday for the "boys" (48 & 24) in my family. Since I discovered this cookbook, they don't know what to expect. Adapting any recipe to whats on hand is so easy. I have fun making up my own concoctions. If there are any left over, a heat up the next day for a snack is convenient. I never thought a canned biscuit could go from plain to fancy with just a few tweeks. I have bought other cookbooks from the "101 series" and have not been dissapointed with any.

Gluten-Free 101: Easy, Basic Dishes Without Wheat Review

Gluten-Free 101: Easy, Basic Dishes Without Wheat
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm delighted that I could transform my wheat intolerance into a gratifying business that helps people eat the foods they love-without the ingredients they don't want. ~Carol Fenster
Carol Fenster, Ph.D. is one of America's gluten-free experts. Her work appears on the Health Network and she enjoys developing gluten-free products for manufacturers. She also counsels patients who are allergic to gluten. Carol's journey began with a case of chronic sinusitis. When she stayed away from wheat, she finally found relief.
Celiac disease now afflicts 1:133 Americans and is now the nation's most common inherited autoimmune disorder. Celiacs have to avoid gluten because it prevents the absorption of nutrients in food. This causes a cascading problem and can lead to anemia, osteoporosis and other health problems like rashes, stomach aches and general fatigue.
When I went to the store to find a Gluten-Free Flour Blend, I found the GF Garbanzo and Fava Flour blend by Bob's Red Mill. Apparently, Carol developed a gluten-free line for Bob's Red Mill. She also gives the recipe for her Sorghum Flour blend in this book.
Today I made the most delicious Banana Muffins using Carol's recipe from page 73. It is a quick bread recipe and you can make a Banana Bread variation. I did use ¾ cup milk instead of the recommended ¼-1/3. So, if you choose to buy a premixed flour blend, you might need to slightly adapt the liquid quantities. Overall, I was very impressed with the recipe and made 24 delicious and healthy banana muffins for breakfast. I'll freeze the leftover muffins for future banana muffin cravings.
Last week, I decided to try the Basic Bread recipe in my bread machine and then sliced the bread thinly and dried it out in the oven for 20 minutes to make crackers. They are the best crackers I've ever tasted. So far, I've only found rice-based crackers at the store, so this was a wonderful solution. You will need to look for items like potato starch, Xanthan gum, guar gum, soy lecithin and cider vinegar. I used rice wine vinegar and another flour in place of the potato starch. So, these recipes can also be adapted to taste. Most of the ingredients are now readily available at your grocery store on the natural foods isle. If you can't locate these in your town, Carol gives plenty of online sources.
This book is simply fascinating because the author is so knowledgeable and even suggests that you stay away from some flours you would never suspect. Her alternative list of flours for Gluten-Free baking will also be useful when you are shopping and reading labels. If you normally use wheat as a thickener, you might want to try Agar, Arrowroot, Cornstarch or Guar Gum. There is a handy substitute list on page 23.
If you decide you are serious about the gluten-free lifestyle, you might want to go through this book and make a list of the special ingredients. Once you have rounded up about 5 main ingredients, you can easily put together a number of healthy recipes. Xanthan gum, gelatin powder, tapioca flour, potato starch, soy lecithin, guar gum, sorgum flour, tapioca flour and a choice of corn flour, almond flour or bean flour are needed for this cookbook. It is nice to know that if you are allergic to nuts, you can also use bean flour or corn flour.
Recipes I'm dreaming about trying:
Breakfast Pizza
Granola with Rice Flakes
Peanut Butter Cookies - I'll use Soy Butter
Chicken Fried Steak
Cinnamon Coffee Cake
Personally, I have a ton more energy when I stay away from wheat products, so this recipe book is helping me to adapt my lifestyle. I'm also excited about trying the Bob's Red Mill flours in my own recipes.

Gluten-Free Cooking For Dummies Review

Gluten-Free Cooking For Dummies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was pleasantly surprised that the book goes far beyond gluten-free cooking tips and recipes. I have read Korn's other 3 books, and all have been tremendously helpful, and even inspiring. The gluten-free diet can be a shocker (give up your beer, your bread, your tasty baked treats, etc.), but the author somehow makes it easy to understand the nuances of this tricky diet. You feel like you are getting one-on-one expert advice in an easygoing, relaxed style. It's weird, but you feel like you know the author after reading the book. The book is even funny.
For anyone starting out on a gluten-free diet, any of Korn's books are winners. If you also like to cook, this is a double dose of education. You will probably refer to it often. Highly recommended on all counts.

Recipes for Repair: A Lyme Disease Cookbook Review

Recipes for Repair: A Lyme Disease Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have Lyme disease for quite a while now and been in treatment for over a year-and-a-half. I had made great progress but suspected food allergies. I found Recipes for Repair at their website [...] and looked over the 4 phase plan.
The book starts with helpful information on the Lyme/inflammation connection which I found very helpful. At the beginning of each phase it lists the allowed foods in a simple format and explains how long one should stay in each phase.
Phase I was scary for me, I have to admit. It's basically a week of detox which means lots of fish and veggies. Much to my surprise, my husband and I loved the meals! Also, before starting phase I, I really looked over the food list to see what I could snack on and what I needed to prepare before-hand to make meal preparation easier. For instance, I made up the mayonnaise and almond meal. You will need to do this before each phase so that you are prepared to cook.
Phase II was a delight. It just adds more safe foods to phase I and my family and I found it to be delicious and doable. Phase III - even better. As of today I cannot do phase 4 which adds in wheat and dairy. I do use recipes from this book for about 4 times a week. Overall this has been one of the best cookbooks I've ever invested in. The pages are tattered from use which is a good sign!
If there is one drawback - if you are bedridden and tired, some of the recipes may be too long and involved. Sometimes I do recipes in chunks. I'll chop veggies and store in fridge or make double batches of rice for two recipes. I think of ways to get around that.
Overall, I feel healthier and better following this diet. I would highly recommend this cookbook if you have Lyme disease or any type of inflammatory condition.

Simply Great Breads: Sweet and Savory Yeasted Treats from America's Premier Artisan Baker Review

Simply Great Breads: Sweet and Savory Yeasted Treats from America's Premier Artisan Baker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I like books about baking. For years I'd pick them up, stare greedily at the tasty pics and then sigh, put them back onto the shelf and slump away, my shoulders down and my mouth frowny. My failure to create bread was a source of anxiety and shame. I've made biryani, cherries flambe and eggs benedict with real hollandaise, but my yeast breads always turned out awful. About once a year I'd pick up a book and give it another try, but it always ended the same, with a dirty kitchen and a lump of floury dough that did not rise and smelled like paste and desperation.
I've since learned the basics. I can make pretzels (thanks Alton), anadama bread and pizza crust (thanks Wolfgang) but I'd gotten into a rut and still had the occasional bread fails. This book, with it's detailed explanations has added several crucial pieces of bread making information. For example, bigas.
If you are like me, a dedicated food lurker, you've heard the word biga. But I wasn't sure what it was or why anyone would want to use it in bread. Since I didn't know what biga was, everytime I ran across a recipe that used it, I'd leave it alone. Turns out Biga is like a sourdough starter, except that it takes a fraction of time to make and isn't sour, sounds intriguing, right?
I'm planning on using it now, not only in the recipe for Ciabatta from the book, but also in other recipes I've found on Food Gawker and the like.
Another interesting and new thing is the recommendation for using wine in place of water for making a pizza dough. I really, really have to give that a try! Update: I made it and it was tasty, it didn't taste like wine (good, because I don't care for wine)but it did have an indefinable sweetness that made it richer and definitely worth trying. I posted pics on my blog of this dough (it was the base of my fairy pizza).
One of the other great things about this book are the variations in ingredients that follow most every recipe. Caramel Monkey Bread becomes Garlic Scallion Monkey Bread and Grape Schiacciata becomes Rosemary Walnut or Cherry Tomato Anise, which is a very good thing because I'm certain to never find fresh champagne grapes here in Washington.
Most of the recipes are ones I've seen before, but it's the easy to follow directions and descriptions that make them noteworthy.
A recipe for Mana'eesh - a Middle Eastern flatbread, sounds like an easy recipe to start out with for the novice bakers and a more complex recipe for bagels is included for the adventurous home cook.
The book loses it's way a little with recipes for jams and too many pages of fried doughs, but it won me over again with a handy list of equivalencies.
I have just two complaints about the book and they are, one, the book is too short and I think it should have at least one basic bread recipe and two, the Navajo fry bread recipe is a fast and loose representation of a culturally important staple of Native American cuisine. But, I guess it's the thought that counts, many people have never tried this delectable treat (totally worth your time and effort, there are a ton of recipes online).

The Vegetarian Family Cookbook Review

The Vegetarian Family Cookbook

Nava Atlas' brand new cookbook has given me motivation to cook again!! With two picky vegetarian children and no time to cook, it has been difficult lately to even think of meal ideas. Atlas' newest cookbook gives great suggestions, is designed to be a great time saver, and is perfect for vegetarian and vegan families. It is a wonderful addition to my family's bookshelf.
This book is easy to read and easy to use. It is divided into a number of sections including: Easy Breakfast Treats, Soothing Soups & Salads, Pasta, Tofu & Seitan, Vegetables and Grains, Easy Side dishes, Sandwiches and School Lunches, Healthy Snacks and Baked Goods.
I really appreciate that most of the recipes have easy-to-find ingredients and are simple to make. Many of Atlas' ingredients are already in your kitchen. Each recipe is clearly marked whether it contains dairy or eggs and most of the recipes include variations. I also love how she makes it easier for readers to plan meals by noting accompanying side dishes and their page numbers. This makes it so easy to serve a complete and delicious meal without frantically having to think of accompaniments.
In addition to the recipes, Atlas discusses vegetarian eating and other topics including pesticides in our food, the vegetarian food pyramid, and websites dedicated to vegetarian and vegan lifestyles.--Denise Steele-Darnell

30 Day Gourmet's BIG Book of Freezer Cooking Review

30 Day Gourmet's BIG Book of Freezer Cooking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been freezer cooking for about ten years and am constantly looking for new recipes and inspiration. After a while, all the cookbooks look the same- until now. This cookbook has the greatest variety of recipes I've seen specifically for freezer cooking along with detailed instructions for freezing and serving. No casseroles and pot luck dinner meals! These recipes range from main dishes to desserts to soups to snacks. If that wasn't good enough, each recipe lists the amount of ingredients needed as the recipe is multiplied. The planning worksheet, tally sheet, shopping list and menu planner are provided. Preparation has never been easier. For beginners, this book also serves as a manual with a step by step instructions and pictures to guide through the process. But my favorite part of this cookbook is the nutritional information that each recipe provides. I strive to provide healthy, well balanced meals and this information assures that I can do just that.
Last Saturday I decided to give this new cookbook a try (with the help of my kids). We started planning at 7am and by 5pm we had filled our freezer with sixteen meals, six side dishes and six desserts. All this for $150. We have loved everything we've eaten far!
