Allergy-free Cooking: How To Survive The Elimination Diet And Eat Happily Ever After Review

Allergy-free Cooking: How To Survive The Elimination Diet And Eat Happily Ever After

This book outlines the Elimination Diet very well. As the above review stated, many recipes do contain oats, but I have found a version of gluten-free oats, Bob's Red Mill brand. Some of the recipes also contain soy, which I am reactive too, but it makes up for it with wonderful recipes that I CAN eat. I'm glad I found this book

I was pleased to see at least two other people mentioned this, but thought I'd throw in my two cents.
With a non-allergic 4 year old and a 2 year old allergic to wheat, dairy, eggs, fish and nuts, I was hoping to find some recipes that would please both kids. Almost all the recipes have dairy or eggs in them. The dairy-free and egg-free options are just to omit them. Great! Pick up any cookbook for that.
I made one recipe from this book and it was awful. (A cake recipe that I had to use 3 substitutions for). There are much better cake recipes out there.
This book is on its way to the used bookstore . . .

Millions of children across the country have food sensitivities or allergies, and the number is on the rise. And most of these children don't get to eat cookies, for fear of the reaction they might have from the wheat, or the peanuts. Imagine the feeling a young child must have as they stand there watching their friends munch on cookies just out of Mom's oven, while they have to make do with yet another carrot stick.
Leslie Hammond knows that left-out feeling all too well. As a child she suffered from severe food allergies and would watch year after year as, when the birthday song had ended and she'd blown out the candles, her fancy party cake was whisked away and served to her friends, while she ate a dry rice cake. Now the mother of allergic children herself, Leslie vowed to spare her own children that trauma. She had developed over 100 recipes that will appeal to a kid's tastes. Unlike other food-allergy cookbooks already on the market, her recipes hardly ever call for the kinds of ingredients that would gross out any kid -- like tofu.

The book's recipes take into account all of the most common food sensitivities like wheat and gluten, peanuts, or dairy. Each recipe can be modified to fit the dietary needs to the child.

It's divided into three sections -- snacks, main dishes, and treats. Leslie and co-author Lynne Rominger also provide information about how to find what you need in a regular grocery store, instead of requiring a separate trip to the natural foods store. She writes from the perspective of an ordinary working mom, and doesn't design eating regimes that would take all day in the kitchen to satisfy.

With the recipes in this book, even the most sensitive child will get a cookie too.

Sinfully Vegan: More than 160 Decadent Desserts to Satisfy Every Sweet Tooth Review

Sinfully Vegan: More than 160 Decadent Desserts to Satisfy Every Sweet Tooth
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
To begin: I love this book. Love, love, love. I do have one complaint, though. With 140 recipes, it's going to take me forever to try them all! Especially since I just want to keep making my favorites over and over again.
Anyway, I could gush for hours about how great the recipes themselves are. [The Richer Than Fort Knox Cake was a huge hit at my husband's workplace. Everyone was shocked that 1) it wasn't from a bakery, and 2) it was 100% vegan. And I always love showing people that you don't deprive yourself of good things by making vegan choices.] But before I get carried away, I'd like to point how how much I love the organization of the book. Each recipe is divided into simple steps, and recipes are subdivided into sections--like the cake, the frosting, the garnish, etc. Also, Ms. Dieterly includes serving info, prep and baking time, and nutritional information, and also notes whether the recipe freezes well. And for those with wheat allergies, all of the wheat-free recipes are specifically marked as such.
She has recipes for the following dessert categories: cookies and brownies; cakes and quick breads; Boston cream pies; pies and tarts; cheesecakes; puddings; donuts and candy; beverages and smoothies; and frostings, toppings, and crusts. Sadly, there are no vegan ice cream recipes. But I'll be so busy eating brownies and cheesecakes and donuts, I won't have time for ice cream anyway!
The ingredients she uses should be familiar to most vegan cooks, and I don't have any trouble finding them. However, if you're new to vegan baking or live in an area where it's difficult to find, for example, silken tofu, then the author provides an introduction to the vegan ingredients you'll need, as well as a list of mail-order companies from which you can purchase the necessary ingredients. And if you're still searching, a quick Google search can reveal numerous places on-line to purchase vegan foodstuffs.
Finally, I'd just like to comment on the writing style. I really enjoy reading the author's recipe descriptions and other comments. She's clear and informative, but also sounds like a friend who's hanging out in your kitchen while you're baking.
All in all, this is a great cookbook. Buy it and amaze your friends with your delicious--and compassionate--desserts.

The Egg, Dairy and Nut Free Cookbook Review

The Egg, Dairy and Nut Free Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My daughter, who is now four, has had egg, nut and dairy allergies since birth. Like the authors son, she was also allergic to my breast milk. I thought I knew it all when it came to providing meals/baking for her, but when I saw this book for sale I thought I'd buy it for interest and in a strange way to support the author who's been through what we have been (are are going) through. Well, I am really impressed and am very grateful to the author for writing it. I have tried 2 recipes which came out fabulously (blueberry muffins and banana muffins) and have the carrot cake baking in the oven while I type!! It look and smells like a success already! Other recipes I've tried for banana muffins have turned out a stodgy gooey lump, but the authors recipe for these were really lovely. Light, distinct pieces of banana and with a really pleasing golden crust which can be quite hard to achieve without eggs or dairy! I'm very happy and would easily serve these up to non-allergic visitors without needing to explain why they aren't quite up to scratch compared to a 'normal' muffin! The recipes use simple, storecupboard ingredients, and apart from a few recipes which use products not available in New Zealand (for eg milk-free whipped topping) I shall be working my way thru this book! A big thank to the author for this one!!

Gluten-Free Without Rice: Easy Cooking for Variety on a Gluten-Free Diet Review

Gluten-Free Without Rice: Easy Cooking for Variety on a Gluten-Free Diet
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Gluten-free baking is different than baking with wheat. Since gluten is what traps the leavening gases and causes bread to rise, gluten-free breads are dense. This is especially true if they are made without multiple additives and stabilizers (which many people are allergic to) as the recipes in this book are. I'm not sure from your review if your problem with "bricks" is unrealistic expectations on how the bread should turn out or a baking problem. However, your "gummy" crackers are almost certainly due to over-mixing. This and other cooking issues that can cause problems with and which are unique to allergy/gluten-free baking are addressed on pages 9-10 of the book. One of the books that I have written does give directions in steps rather than paragraphs (The Ultimate Food Allergy Cookbook and Survival Guide) and I do have a website (which currently comes up 6th if you search "food allergies" in Google, or you can get it under publisher information if you look up any of my books on Google Books. Sorry to make you search but Amazon frowns on websites being posted). If you contact me though my website, I will give you whatever support you need for your baking problems. Also, I kind of "fixed" your rating by bringing the average up to 3. Good luck with your son's diet, and I hope you read this and contact me through my website. Posted by the author.

Dairy-Free Cookbook, Fully Revised 2nd Edition : Over 250 Recipes for People with Lactose Intolerance or Milk Allergy
Average Reviews:

Ms. Zukin's book is probably an invaluable resource for those who cannot tolerate lactose, but those of us who are allergic to milk protein will find dangerous information in this book.
She lists as "dairy-free" products which clearly contain milk (Wendy's bread sticks contail "skim milk"; their hamburger buns contain "sodium caseinate"). These are not items that have changed over the years; my dairy-allergic son has never been able to eat Wendy's buns, and he's nearly 13 years old.
The recipes are fairly good, though I get irked by reading "milk substitute" in them - I'd rather see the brand name of the product she used (soy milk tastes very different from rice milk, for instance).
With this book, as with every packaged food product, you must read carefully and be certain the food she mentions is safe. You can't take her word for it. The title, therefore, is quite misleading.
I won't buy another book written by this author.

I love the taste of nutritional yeast so I was excited to get this cookbook. Its written by Red Star, the makers of one brand one nutritional yeast, so be prepared to see their name plastered throughout the book. The recipes in here are vegan - even in recipes like the mushroom soup where tofu sour cream is used. Its really good too. There are recipes for sauces (including cheez sauces), aioli, "pate", pesto, soups, salads, sandwiches, and pasta dishes. The popcorn recipe with the yeast flakes is a real hit in our house too. Excellent book to help get a lot more use out of the yeast flakes.

Living Gluten and Dairy-Free with French Gourmet Food: A Practical Guide Review

Living Gluten and Dairy-Free with French Gourmet Food: A Practical Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Living Gluten and Dairy-Free French Gourmet Food" is the second cookbook by Austin Chef Alain Braux. Alain has impressive credentials as a traditionally trained French chef but, even more interesting, is a nutritherapist - a term used in Europe for nutritionists who use only food as a healing medium, as opposed to conventional nutritionists, who usually work with supplements, homeopathy and herbal medicine.
Since writing his first book, "How to Lower your Cholesterol with French Gourmet Food", Alain recently discovered that he was gluten intolerant and has gone on to compile his knowledge into a new book for those of us who love good food, more especially traditional French food.
Alain's comment `gluten-free junk food is still junk food' is such an astute observation. He believes we should eat thoughtfully, be aware, and indulge carefully on special occasions.
Features found in this book aside from the wonderful recipes:
1) Narratives from people about their journey of GFCF discovery - one of these stories might be your `aha!' trigger
2) Sympathy for the many reasons you may be attempting to self medicate and suggestions on how to find the right doctor
3) Why keeping a food journal is so very important (there may be additional sensitivities)
4) Setting yourself up for gluten-free and casein-free success
5) A comprehensive list of resources for Celiac Disease and Autism including books, magazines, organizations, and online support
6) Those mysterious food additives that could indicate `hidden' gluten - pages of them
7) `Safe' and `not safe'; in medication, vitamins, toiletries, household cleaners

The Milk-Free Kitchen: Living Well Without Dairy Products Review

The Milk-Free Kitchen: Living Well Without Dairy Products
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a mother of a child who has recently been diagnosed with milk allergy, I found this book disappointing. Prior to it's purchase, I had spent a considerable amount of time in health food stores becoming familiar with all the substitutes there are for milk - such as rice "milk", soy products, etc.. None of these are used in this book. As the author admits, this book focuses on what a person can eat. Most of these receipes are food dishes that just about anyone who has cooked before would already know can be prepared without milk. For those not so obvious, the author only substitutes water in the place of milk. I could have just as easily look up these receipes in a regular cook book. What I really needed was something that helps me create dishes for my daughter that she loves, but that she can no longer have due to her allergy. What I found most helpful was the section on cheese and have since started giving my daughter goat cheese products to see if she can tolerate this.
To anyone in search of good milk-free receipes, I suggest writing to or going to the web site of those companies who make products to replace dairy, such as soy, rice, almond, and other multi-gran products. They have really saved me.

If you suffer from food allergies (gluten, casein, sugar) this book is for you. Kelly Brozyna's recipes are unique and original and are so delicious they make you forget what you had to give up because of allergies. The photographs look great and the recipe instructions are easy to follow. Ms. Brozyna kept in mind that most people don't have a lot of time and her recipes are not time consuming or complicated. There is also an informative section in the beginning that deals with food storage, sugar avoidance, natural sweeteners, autism, and all around healthy living. I highly recommend the almond muffins, custard pie and broccoli quiche. I look forward to making and eating a better variety of "safe" foods with The Spunky Coconut Cookbook!

Food Allergy Survival Guide: Surviving and Thriving with Food Allergies and Sensitivities Review

Food Allergy Survival Guide: Surviving and Thriving with Food Allergies and Sensitivities
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For those with food allergies, maintaining a vegan diet can be challenging. Soy, nuts, corn, and glutinous grains are in so many foods that it is difficult to avoid them. Food Allergy Survival Guide will help you to figure out what foods you are sensitive to and how to replace them with healthful, plant-based ingredients.
The book starts with an explanation of what food allergies and intolerances are and what they are caused by. If you ever wanted to know in detail how your digestive system works, you will get a full description in this book. Food Allergy Survival Guide also provides information about many medical conditions like arthritis, asthma, ADHD, candida, celiac disease, depression, dermatitis, fatigue, and migraines that can be caused by or worsened by certain foods. For each condition, there are suggestions of possible food culprits and suggestions to manage the condition.
If you are not sure if you have food allergies or what foods you are allergic to, you can find out what tests can be used to find out. The pros and cons of medical invasive and non-invasive tests are discussed as well as some do-it-yourself methods.
Once you know what foods have an adverse affect on your well-being, the trick is avoiding them. As the authors point out, foods like dairy, soy, corn, egg, and wheat are hidden in labels under all kinds of different names. For example, egg may be listed as binder, emulsifier, or coagulant. Corn can be listed as caramel coloring or dextrose. Food Allergy Survival Guide tells you what foods most often include common allergens and provide detailed lists of labeling terms that may be allergenic foods.
The best method of dealing with multiple food allergies is to cook most of your own meals. Fortunately, Food Allergy Survival Guide provides over 100 delicious recipes free of dairy, eggs, fish, wheat, gluten, soy, peanuts, and yeast. Very helpful is the gluten-free flour mix, which can replace wheat flour in any recipe, and a corn-free baking powder substitute.
I tried a couple of the recipes from the baking section for my holiday entertaining. The Ultra-Fudge Brownies and Pumpkin Spice Bread were a big hit. Besides baked good, the book also includes seasoning and spice mixes, breakfast cereals and smoothies, dips and spreads, salads and dressings, soups, main dishes, side dishes, and desserts. Don't worry if some of the ingredients are new to you. The book explains unfamiliar ingredients, and suppliers are listed in the resource section. I had no trouble finding any of the foods at my local natural foods store.
Food Allergy Survival Guide is an excellent book for those suffering from food allergies but it is also a great resource for vegans. You'll discover ways that animal products might be hidden in processed or restaurant foods, and how to avoid them. And you'll love the wonderful vegan recipes. Best of all, you can find out how to thrive if you are both vegan and have food allergies.

If "The Complete Idiot's Guide" sounds frivolous to you, keep reading. My granddaughter at the ripe old age of 5 has a severe lactose intolerance. She also has a mom and grandmother who are both excellent cooks. The cooks have given this book nothing but rave reviews. They both use the book so much that I bought them each a copy. If you are looking for just one cook book to truly protect someone with a lactose problem and at the same time provide an amazingly complete array of delicious and attractive recipes (that are great for the whole family, not just the allergic person), I'd say this is the one. We have a library of cook books that fills one wall of shelves. About a dozen books of those books are about lactose intolerance and food allergies, but this one by far gets the most use.

The Whole Foods Allergy Cookbook: Two Hundred Gourmet & Homestyle Recipes for the Food Allergic Family Review

The Whole Foods Allergy Cookbook: Two Hundred Gourmet and Homestyle Recipes for the Food Allergic Family
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This cookbook was a very helpful addition to my library. I have tried 7 recipes so far and my husband and kids loved them all. I can't believe it! My 11-year-old has multiple food allergies and my 5-year-old's allergist suggested that we try to go organic because of some ADHD-type issues (possible allergies to food additives, pesticides or preservatives?) and this seems to be a perfect resource.
I like the juxtaposition of simple recipes for meat and potatoes types like my husband (meatloaf, swedish meatballs, coleslaw, chocolate cake, apple and cherry pie, mashed potatoes, cream soups, soft pretzels, shepherd's pie, chili, pot pie, banana bread, cornbread) with the more sophisticated recipes for things like osso bucco, chicken marsala, pomegranite glazed rock cornish game hens, curried lamb, and vietnamese summer rolls.
You get an authentic feeling when the author writes about her italian dishes. She often gives familial/personal anecdotes which are fun to read. I wish my food heritage was so rich!
As for some of the negative comments I've seen here, I'm surprized. Substitutes are always offered for people with severe wheat allergies. She has a section where she talks about mixing types of flour (specifically as an alternative to spelt) to get optimal results and she offers another book as a resource. In the beer-batter chicken nugget recipe, she suggests a specific brand of wheat-free beer (and, by the way, the alcohol cooks out). I agree about the chopped livers, sorry...but there are 199 other recipes I'll try. She has included a great pantry list.
I found spectrum oils at my local health food store. The author also included a resource section and the website for spectrum oils is there. To the person who couldn't find Spectrum, maybe ask Spectrum directly where your closest source may be?
It's so frustrating when the world seems to be trying to hurt your child by mislabeling, misdiagnosing and misunderstanding allergies. Your temper can get the better of you; mine has. I believe this cookbook may be one of a few that offers real advice and real alternatives.

Eat, Drink & Be Vegan: Everyday Vegan Recipes Worth Celebrating Review

Eat, Drink and Be Vegan: Everyday Vegan Recipes Worth Celebrating
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I should have written a review of this cookbook long ago, but I finally just put my fork down (literally) after eating another one of ED&BV's fabulous recipes and said, "People must know how great this cookbook is!" And here I am :)
What did I just finish? The White Bean, Walnut, and Spinach Phyllo Rolls with the Traditional Cranberry Sauce. This is the second time I have made it. It is unbelievable. So easy, but so elegant and delicious. That's how I characterize a lot of Dreena's recipes - easy, elegant, delicious. This book is full of uncomplicated recipes with easy to find ingredients (at least, for me - I have a decently stocked Stop & Shop, Shaw's Supermarket, Whole Foods, and health food store within a 15-mile radius). The results have all been spectacular. I've also made (and LOVED) the Olive Oyl Pasta, White Bean & Rosemary Soup with Jumbo Croutons (OMG amazing), Sun-Dried Tomato Pesto with Toasted Almonds and Pine Nuts, Sweet Potato Lentil Chili, Rosemary Cornmeal Polenta Fries, Lentil Veggie Chimichangas with Hide the Lentils Tomato Sauce, Coconut Lime Basmati Rice, Cashew-Ginger Tofu, Thai Chick-Un Pizza, Orange Sesame Tofu, Olive and Sun-Dried Tomato Hummus, Savory French Lentils, Cimmamon Lime Quinoa with Apricots and Almonds, One Wild Chick Soup (honestly, it is as savory and filling as the best chicken and rice soup you would have eaten in your "omni" days), Veggie Tempeh Muffaletta (I think I'm in love...probably the most time-consuming recipe in the book, but it is sooooooo worth it!), Beats a BLT Sandwich! (sure does!), Spicy Sweet Potato and Peanut Stew with Polenta Croutons, Cumin Lime Tofu, Autumn Puree, Smoky Split Pea Soup, Quinoa Chickpea Confetti Casserole, Moroccan-Infused Phyllo Rolls with Balsamic Maple Sauce (mmmmmmm so good!), and Monkey Minestrone. I literally cannot believe how many more of the recipes I want to try. I think I am going to try almost every single one in the book! Dreena makes everything seem so accessible. I'd never made anything with tempeh before (despite began a vegan for a while now!) but with her clear, step by step instructions and sidebars, Dreena makes vegan cooking approachable for everyone, vegans and omnis alike. I can tell you, I have not even come close to using as many recipes in my other vegan cookbooks as I have with ED&BV. Let me be frank... I own several vegan cookbooks...all the major titles by all the major vegan cookbook authors...and this is, by FAR, the best of the bunch. If you own one vegan cookbook, make it ED&BV. You won't regret it!

In Dreena Burton's first two best-selling vegan cookbooks, The Everyday Vegan and Vive le Vegan!, she offered a dazzling array of healthy, animal-free recipes, many of which were based on her experience as a mother of two young girls she and her husband are raising as vegans. Dreena also maintains an active website (www.everydayvegan.com) and blog (www.vivelevegan.blogspot.com) and has cultivated an enthusiastic audience for her family-oriented, nutritious recipes. This book has over 120 heart healthy, delicious recipes for vegans and non-vegans alike! Let me get this out of the way...my absolute, hands down, favorite recipe in this book: "Linguine With Spicy Red Garbanzo Sauce". The simplicity of the healthful ingredients was a real shock to me. I figured ok, another spaghetti recipe...It is so much more. Serve it with some "Cheezy Garlic Bread" and a spinach salad topped with "Tomato-Garlic Dressing". Do your palate and your heart a favor...With a mere 21 calories and 0 fat, this dressing packs a punch! Of course if you've been missing ranch, there is the "Classic Ranch Dressing" to try as well...so creamy! The "Moroccan CousCous" is authentic and tasty. I love it! "Garlic Infused Smashed Potatoes" are heavenly when smothered in "Golden Gravy". It almost seems wrong that there is 0 guilt associated with these dishes! Looking for breakfast? Try what is (in my opionion) a vegan's best friend...flax! The "Flaxjacks" on page 40 are a tasty way to start your day right. I like to top them with "Peanut Whip" instead of jam. "Tropical Style Museli" is filling and healthful, I love it with a dash of vanilla rice milk.
Of course there are too many recipes to review them all here, but I always save room for dessert...in this book namely the "Apple Crisp". Simple, traditional and stunning...a real crowd-pleasing crisp.
This book is chock full of recipes, 14 days of menus, information to keep your heart happy and extensive information on ingredients. I like that the grain section even offers pressure-cooker alternatives for most of the dishes.
Kudos to you Jo, you've done it again!
