Entertaining for a Veggie Planet: 250 Down-to-Earth Recipes Review

Entertaining for a Veggie Planet: 250 Down-to-Earth Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a delightful cookbook which will light up your taste buds as it takes you into uncharted territory in vegetarian cooking. As the primary cook in a vegetarian household, I often find myself at a loss for new ideas, or uninspired by the typical offerings of vegetarian cookbooks. This book changes all that - I now have a wide range of possibilities that excite me, turning a chore into a fun activity.
Full disclosure here: I tested many recipes during the development of this cookbook. But I knew nothing about Didi Emmons before this testing - and with three young kids and a demanding job, I had no interest when a mutual friend suggested I might enjoy testing recipes and providing feedback. I declined, but the message was lost and a recipe was sent to me. I decided I'd try just one (Chard and Eggplant Salad with Miso-Sesame Vinaigrette). When I put a forkful of the finished product into my mouth, I was shocked to discover how good it was. This was the first of what were to be repeated experiences of finding that, in Didi's recipes, the whole is often greater than the sum of the parts - and that surprisingly good and often completely unexpected synergies develop from her recipes.
After this first test, I was hooked. I tested approximately 30 recipes over the next six months. With few exceptions, the recipes were excellent. In a remarkable number of cases, they were sublime. The "Hip Dip" always goes fast at parties. It's an edamame (green soy bean), cilantro, lime juice, olive oil, etc. mixture with a fresh and wholesome flavor. It's perfect slathered on hearty bread and cut into small sandwiches. Other must-try recipes include: Crispy Rice Cakes on Spinach with Viet Red Pepper Sauce - as visually appealing as it is delicious. Root Stew with Millet Cakes - a perfect winter dish and the first time I've ever found a flavorful way to cook millet. The root stew is excellent on its own, but the addition of the millet cakes creates a wonderful fusion. Also, Crispy Bun (noodle) Tofu - an exquisite combination of cooked, fried noodles with a carrot, red cabbage slaw and a tangy mint/lime juice/garlic sauce - hearty yet light - and scrumptious. And Creamy Parsnip Soup with Horseradish - sweet, filling, and with a delicate bite. And if you're in search of the perfect brownie recipe, look no further. Stowe Brownies are exactly as described in the book - "rich and slightly gooey with a crisp, tender exterior".
This book is also fun to read. It is sprinkled throughout with stories and advice about entertaining, including laugh out loud material about Didi's family and neighbors (especially her parents at the holidays) and advice about such diverse topics as purchasing truffle oil (a must-have item, the wonders of which I discovered thanks to Didi); lighting the wrappers from Amaretti di Saronno crackers and watching them flame and lift off into the air (it really works and lights up a dull party); and how to clean your home in 30 minutes. There's also a comprehensive "friendly guide to unfamiliar ingredients" - with descriptions of ingredients and advice on where to locate them.
If you find that you're stuck when it comes to entertaining with vegetarian dishes, this is a great book to get you out of the doldrums.

Visiting Claire's Corner Copia for lunch was always a treat when I was growing up in New Haven,so I was very excited when my mother gave me Claire's cookbook for Christmas 2 years ago. It did not disappoint. The recipes are delicious and easy to follow and many have an Italian flavor. I think the best recommendation I can give is that my meat-loving husband enjoys the meals I have prepared from this cookbook- his favorite is the Eggplant "Meatballs"- try them!

Vegetarian Soups for All Seasons Review

Vegetarian Soups for All Seasons
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For me, the one thing that matters about a cookbook is: is it *inspired* or not? The ones that are not may have one to a few usable recipes, almost by accident, but the majority are either based on stale ideas, or they are too heavy, due to their use of meat, fat, sugar, or other such ingredients.
This book far surpassed my expectations. The recipes are original, hearty, satisfying - and low-fat. One of these soups with some bread and cheese makes for a simple and delicious weekday meal.
Most of the soups we've tried from this book have come out very well. We got off to a good start with Garlicky Cream of Celery Soup (p. 39). Examples of other successes: Cream of White Vegetables (p. 15; this worked fine with Chinese white radish/daikon; turnip is unavailable in Taiwan) - very smooth, soothing and flavorful; Gingered Pumpkin-Apple Soup (p. 25) - I'm not sure I'll put the apple in next time, but we all enjoyed the complex flavors of this one; Cream of Broccoli Soup with Whole Wheat Pasta (p. 96) also wasn't bad, even with plain macaroni shells. The Moroccan-Style Vegetable Stew (p. 26), with pumpkin, chickpeas and couscous, was very unusual and quite tasty. I was less impressed with the Tomato-Rice Soup with Snow Peas (p. 93) - this ended up something like Campbell's tomato rice, but then but I did make some substitutions, like white rice for brown. And I probably should have let the Curried Cauliflower-Cheese Soup (p. 84) thicken more before serving. You can skip the Sauerkraut Soup (p. 36) - this was edible, but didn't much appeal to any of us; too heavy on the sweet and sour, and not very satisfying. Still, I'm very gung ho about continuing to try out the other recipes. Well over half the recipes look doable to me in our environment, and that's a remarkably high ratio. I have found no other soup cookbook that can compare with this one. The recipes that work - and that has been most of them so far - are excellent, and just our style.
The book not only gives individual recipes but in fact teaches a *method* for making good vegetarian soups, i.e. pureeing cooked vegetables for a thick and hearty but not too rich base. Organizing the recipes by the seasons makes it easier to find a soup suited to the weather.
P. 27 has a recipe for 'Squash and Corn Chower', but that's the only typo I've spotted. The pencil drawings and quotes are quite charming. I haven't yet tried the bread and other 'accompaniments' recipes in the back, but they look intriguing.
In short: if you like soup but not meat, and are looking for ideas for simple but very good meals on the light side, this book is an outstanding choice.

New Vegetarian: Bold and Beautiful Recipes for Every Occasion Review

New Vegetarian: Bold and Beautiful Recipes for Every Occasion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own a number of vegetarian cookbooks, and although all of them are good, they tend to be in the "nuts and grains" variety of cooking. Which I love, but its nice to get a different perspective sometimes, which is why this book is great. It breaks from typical veggie cookbooks in two aspects, actually: types of recipes, and the look of the book. Its simply beautiful, actually. I enjoy flipping through it and looking at the recipes. And so far, although I'm no master cook, the dishes have turned out as well as the pictures.
One downfall, I think, is the focus on mostly Asian dishes (again, I love Asian food, but it would be nice to get a few more non-Asian recipes... maybe in the sequel), and the small number of recipes in the book. I guess you can't have both huge, pretty pictures and lots of text at the same time... oh well.
However, it covers all the basics of vegetarian cooking as well as suggesting some exciting ideas. Pick up the veggie cookbook staples, and then this will make a wonderful addition to your collection!

Betty Crocker's Vegetarian Cooking: Easy Meatless Main Dishes Your Family Will Love Review

Betty Crocker's Vegetarian Cooking: Easy Meatless Main Dishes Your Family Will Love
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The recipes in this book are simple but interesting, and use ingredients which can be found at a typical grocery store. Each recipe provides an approximate required preparation and cooking time. Color photos are offered for many of the dishes, and the recipes are well-organized and easy to follow. There are a great many recipes (I didn't count them!), so I find myself reaching for this book often, to find something different to make. I think this is a good book for new vegetarians, as it should erase the common misconception that vegetarian food is difficult to make and requires things like tofu and nutritional yeast! Many recipes suggest a simple meat addition, which would be helpful for families with both vegetarians and meat-eaters.

Heart of the Home: A Vegetarian Cookbook for People Who Want to Make a Change But Don't Know Where to Start. Review

Heart of the Home: A Vegetarian Cookbook for People Who Want to Make a Change But Don't Know Where to Start.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"The moon was in Scorpio, and I was three sheets to the wind_" Thus begins the recipe for "Enchilada Sauce," just across the page from "White Woman's Bar-Be-Que Sauce."
Both irreverent and down-to-earth; open at any page and you'll know "Heart of the Home" isn't like any cookbook you've seen before. This is vegetarian cooking, down-home country style, and this is literature.
"If you have Cancer in your astrological chart, you will love making gravy, stir to your heart's content." Reassuring those who haven't ever picked up a pot before, nudging old hands to take chances they've never taken, this is a book for anyone wanting to connect or reconnect with the essential experience of cooking for others. Beyond that, it's a walk into one woman's extraordinary collection of warm moments and memories of special encounters, mostly in the kitchen.
Meet my old friend Ann Jackson. Truly a unique and original talent, when I first knew her she was the cook for a warehouse full of vegetarian men and women running one of the biggest natural foods operations in the West. I was the produce manager. Every morning Ann would come around the corner of that big walk-in cooler looking to see what was fresh and good and it was like the start of another day's adventure.
There's a whole cast of characters here, and every recipe is delivered with definite personality. Patsy, Senter, Dorita, Lindsey, Licorice, Tommy Merritt and a roving cast of truckers, girlfriends, pets, produce dealers and crazy Italians wander the range of food and adventure, covering the ground from "Prem Nagar Pea Soup" & "Solidarity Borscht" to "Milwaukee Street Squash" & "Nostromo Noodles." One of my favorites is "Mama's Dark Secret," and if Ann didn't invent "Chicken Fried Tofu," she sure perfected the form toward true immortality.
"What good is it how healthy something is if it doesn't taste good?" Healthy and good food that doesn't weigh you down and doesn't bore you either. I remember Ann used to call it "meat and potatoes vegetarian cooking." This is cooking for an American palette, without the usual American reliance on cheese and meat and processed additives. One of the author's goals is to encourage us to escape our dependence on cow, but she is never dogmatic, and most of the recipes can go either way. "_If you don't want to use soy milk, fine, use milk, use cream for all I care (they're your thighs), just get in there and do it!" Her other objective is to introduce us to a whole range of possibilities for vegetarian staples like tofu, tempeh, miso, seaweeds, grains, rice and noodles, while proving that we don't have to leave behind such traditional fare as Potato Salad (the best I've tasted), Corn Fritters, Chocolate Cream Pie, Hushpuppies and Baked Beans.
Ann and her husband own and manage 'Time After Time,' a very successful 2nd hand clothes store in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. They live amidst a fantastic collection of folk art and memorabilia (from which the 50s illustrations that adorn "Heart of the Home" are taken). The kitchen is clearly near the heart of their home, and with this cookbook we're all invited to sit around the kitchen table to share a few good stories and a lot of good eating.

I live a block away from the restaurant, but find myself turning to the book to cook one of their specialities at home, especially Halibut Caddy Ganty, Pasta Greta Garbo, or some of their hearty soups.
This book finally inspired me to start baking my own bread again, too. Their basic whole wheat bread recipe is great for a single person since it's for one loaf.
This is a wonderful book for seafood lovers, especially if you want to impress your friends with some inspired fish recipes. It's obvious that the cooks who wrote this book love cooking, and want readers to enjoy it too!

High Road to Health: A Vegetarian Cookbook Review

High Road to Health: A Vegetarian Cookbook
Average Reviews:

First, Thank You Amazon for your speedy delivery. I had this book in 3 days.
I purchased this book not to become a vegetarian but to learn to cook healthier foods. I must say that after reading and trying the recipes Lyndsay and Ariane did a wonderful job. This book actually informs the reader on the health benefits of a more natural diet using whole grains and more fruits and vegetables. They do not say you have to be a vegetarian they just give you information and guidelines for a healthier lifestyle.
If anyone has tried Vegetarian cookbooks before (as I have), and thrown them out because they were complicated with ingredients you can't find, try this book, I had almost everything in my kitchen already, there are no funky things to go out and find, and my sons (9 and 11) have decided they like soy milk better than regular milk. Best book I have ever purchase. Thanks goes to Lyndsay and Ariane.

The Essential Vegetarian Cookbook: Your Guide to the Best Foods on Earth: What to Eat, Where to Get It, How to Prepare It Review

The Essential Vegetarian Cookbook: Your Guide to the Best Foods on Earth: What to Eat, Where to Get It, How to Prepare It
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is THE cookbook to buy if you're making the big change from carnivore to herbivore. Written in a friendly, light manner with lots of tips and helpful information, The Essential Vegetarian also offers tasty recipes that don't call for exotic or unusual ingredients.
Before offering the recipes, Dianna Shaw provides several types of menus for different lifestyles. For example, there are menus for athletes, pregnant or nursing women, diabetics and even one for people who want to lose weight. The menus are well-balanced and interesting and offer tips on how to incorporate healthier eating into a busy lifestyle.
My main complaint about other vegetarian cookbooks is that many of their recipes would not be considered by the average American because of the ingredients or length of time required to prepare the dish. This is an important consideration a vegetarian cookbook author should keep in mind, especially if he or she wants to win over more people to vegetarianism. Shaw's recipes are fun and unique, without daunting the novice cook. She includes a few that present more of a challenge to the more experienced cook and even changes a few familiar recipes to provide a new twist, such as her Kidney Bean Hummus.
Shaw leaves little to chance. In her Breakfast section, she gives easy-to-understand and concise instructions on how to create the perfect poached egg. Her recipes for hot cereals, such as oatmeal and cornmeal mush, are clever and helpful, particularly if you're someone like me, who often has trouble avoiding lumps in the cereal.
I strongly recommend this book to vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. Shaw is not a preachy author. In her introduction, she talks about craving and eating meat voraciously during her pregnancy and makes no apologies. She prefers vegetarianism, but does not come across as a religious zealot. I think even members of the National Cattlemen's Association would like this book. Her other book, Almost Vegetarian, is another good read with great recipes.

As an old Chicago Diner fan, I could not wait for this book to come out. Since I purchased it, have been using it for so many dishes at home.. Everything is so healthy and easy to make. Try the tofu cheesecake, cream soups (made with soy milk), Ex-Benedict, Tofu roll, Chocolate mousse. Even my kids approve of the dishes. They still have not figured out that they are eating tofu. Jo Kaucher translated most of the comfort foods you remember from your childhood into healthy vegan recipes -- that taste great! Thank you...

May All Be Fed: 'a Diet For A New World : Including Recipes By Jia Patton And Friends Review

May All Be Fed: 'a Diet For A New World : Including Recipes By Jia Patton And Friends
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With a more personal style than Diet For a New America, John Robbins teaches us about the production and consumption of meat, chicken, fish, dairy and eggs. What I like about this book is how he comes from a spiritual rather than statistics-only perspective. Robbins encourages us to remember the simple health-nourishing habits like giving thanks and chewing your food slowly, those simple things we can easily forget in our modern ironic eat-quick-so-you-can-make-it-to-yoga-class lifestyles. I especially like the "What You Can Do" section, inspiring readers to educate themselves and others, giving tips on shopping/ cooking healthy foods and a listing of resources.
Jia Patton's recipes make the book for me. I had the privilege of taking some of her cooking classes with gourmet vegan food which melts your taste buds in its richness and diversity of flavor. In May All Be Fed, Jia abolishes stereotypes of vegan food being bland. Every time I have made the "Cream of Broccoli Soup" for friends they ask for the recipe and love it, deservedly so, with its creamy cashew base. The "Spinach Tofu Quiche" is wonderful too (people don't seem to miss the dairy); the "Plum Cobbler" feels healthy yet satisfies the sweet tooth going down. I recommend this book for anyone who is open to learning about the vegan diet, and who enjoys cooking and eating fulfilling and jazzy meals.

OK, So Now You're a Vegetarian: Advice and 100 Recipes from One Vegetarian to Another
Average Reviews:

Though I am 23, older than the intended audience, my Mom bought me this book as a present. I was thrilled with it. Lauren Butts has created a fun and easy cookbook for anyone. I love the layout of the cookbook, it is divided into sections, and I enjoyed her nutritional info in the front of the book. Maybe it will inspire more teens to go veg.I found this cookbook full of great meatless recipes. I must warn strict vegetarians and vegans however, that most recipes contain dairy products, or eggs. There is a great recipe for "Nathan's Blueberry Breakfast Cupcakes", that is easy to make and tastes like store bought. However when I tried to get my three year old neighbor to eat one, he refused in horror. Other recipes that I have enjoyed making include: apricot chimichangas, Thai tofu Veggie Wrap-yum, Burrito Roll up, Veggie Pitas (Tastes the same as Wendy's veggie pita), Layered Nacho Salad, Mock Caesar Salad (in case you didn't know, Caesar Salad dressing is typically made with ANCHOVIES-fish=meat), Chilled Berry Soup-this is a fabulous recipe I made last summer when berries were plentiful, it is totally tasty and makes a great meal, TASTY FLATBREAD PIZZA WITH ARTICHOKE HEARTS!! This pizza was so unbelievably tasty, I have always been a bit wary of artichoke hearts, they just look kind of disgusting you know, but I was so shocked to discover their delicious taste!! Veggie Quesadillas were also fabulous. SPAGHETTI PIE is indeed a great dish, and I like to make it when serving non-vegetarians. It has been a hit with everyone so far. Tofu McNuggets are the absolute bomb. These recipes are only a fraction of the great ones in this book. I would highly recommend it to parents of new young vegetarians, or college students like myself who don't have that much time to cook. Some have opined that this book is full of recipes that are fattening, but I think most know, that us vegetarians are a mostly lean lot, and I can personally attest that the recipes aren't fattening. Thanks Lauren for creating a great book, it is indeed an oasis as far as Veg cookbooks go. Its great to have a cookbook that isn't full of really long, hard to find, expensive ingredients!

Dairy-Free Cookbook, Fully Revised 2nd Edition : Over 250 Recipes for People with Lactose Intolerance or Milk Allergy
Average Reviews:

Ms. Zukin's book is probably an invaluable resource for those who cannot tolerate lactose, but those of us who are allergic to milk protein will find dangerous information in this book.
She lists as "dairy-free" products which clearly contain milk (Wendy's bread sticks contail "skim milk"; their hamburger buns contain "sodium caseinate"). These are not items that have changed over the years; my dairy-allergic son has never been able to eat Wendy's buns, and he's nearly 13 years old.
The recipes are fairly good, though I get irked by reading "milk substitute" in them - I'd rather see the brand name of the product she used (soy milk tastes very different from rice milk, for instance).
With this book, as with every packaged food product, you must read carefully and be certain the food she mentions is safe. You can't take her word for it. The title, therefore, is quite misleading.
I won't buy another book written by this author.
