The Sweet Potato Lover's Cookbook: More than 100 ways to enjoy one of the world's healthiest foods Review

The Sweet Potato Lover's Cookbook: More than 100 ways to enjoy one of the world's healthiest foods
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These days, I think published cook books need better formatting and illustration in order to compete against the resources that are already available through an internet search. This nice little book on sweet potatoes would have benefited greatly from some color photographs - especially since it is basically a revised and updated edition of The Sweet Potato Cookbook. As it stands, the only color photos are on the front and back cover. If I were considering this book as a gift for someone - say for my diabetic father or anyone moving away from white potatoes for health reasons - I would be unhappy with this purchase. While it is full of recipes, it lacks visual appeal. There are a few drawn illustrations but they do little to educate or inspire, in my opinion.
The recipes range from super simple mashed sweet potatoes to exotic desserts like Lime Sweet Potato Chiffon Pie (boy, I sure would have loved to see what that looks like). There are small fact and history sections in the front that I found interesting. Such as putting cut sweet potatoes in salt water to keep them from browning. Recipes are divided up into the traditional categories: appetizers, beverages, soups, salads, breads, breakfasts, main dishes, side dishes, friendship recipes (recipes shared by friends)and some international selections in the Around the World chapter. There's a wide variety here to choose from and since I bought this for my own use, I am not unhappy with my purchase. It will benefit anyone who would like to learn more about cooking this super food - to include the traditional methods.
It should be noted that this is not a vegan, vegetarian or even a diabetic cook book. While some of the recipes certainly fall into those categories, others include items like milk, eggs, meat, bacon drippings, etc... Beyond including the sweet potato as an ingredient, the recipes have little else in common - no "theme" to offer those who have specific dietary requirements. The subtitle of the book is: "More than 100 ways to Enjoy One of the World's Healthiest Foods" - unfortunately, many of the recipes include decidedly unhealthy ingredients. While perhaps better for you than alternatives, Sweet Potato Doughnuts, for example, are still just deep fried dough. There's a little bit of everything in this collection.
A 3 star review doesn't mean this is a bad cook book. Amazon defines a 3 star review as "OK".

Vegetarian Soups for All Seasons Review

Vegetarian Soups for All Seasons
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For me, the one thing that matters about a cookbook is: is it *inspired* or not? The ones that are not may have one to a few usable recipes, almost by accident, but the majority are either based on stale ideas, or they are too heavy, due to their use of meat, fat, sugar, or other such ingredients.
This book far surpassed my expectations. The recipes are original, hearty, satisfying - and low-fat. One of these soups with some bread and cheese makes for a simple and delicious weekday meal.
Most of the soups we've tried from this book have come out very well. We got off to a good start with Garlicky Cream of Celery Soup (p. 39). Examples of other successes: Cream of White Vegetables (p. 15; this worked fine with Chinese white radish/daikon; turnip is unavailable in Taiwan) - very smooth, soothing and flavorful; Gingered Pumpkin-Apple Soup (p. 25) - I'm not sure I'll put the apple in next time, but we all enjoyed the complex flavors of this one; Cream of Broccoli Soup with Whole Wheat Pasta (p. 96) also wasn't bad, even with plain macaroni shells. The Moroccan-Style Vegetable Stew (p. 26), with pumpkin, chickpeas and couscous, was very unusual and quite tasty. I was less impressed with the Tomato-Rice Soup with Snow Peas (p. 93) - this ended up something like Campbell's tomato rice, but then but I did make some substitutions, like white rice for brown. And I probably should have let the Curried Cauliflower-Cheese Soup (p. 84) thicken more before serving. You can skip the Sauerkraut Soup (p. 36) - this was edible, but didn't much appeal to any of us; too heavy on the sweet and sour, and not very satisfying. Still, I'm very gung ho about continuing to try out the other recipes. Well over half the recipes look doable to me in our environment, and that's a remarkably high ratio. I have found no other soup cookbook that can compare with this one. The recipes that work - and that has been most of them so far - are excellent, and just our style.
The book not only gives individual recipes but in fact teaches a *method* for making good vegetarian soups, i.e. pureeing cooked vegetables for a thick and hearty but not too rich base. Organizing the recipes by the seasons makes it easier to find a soup suited to the weather.
P. 27 has a recipe for 'Squash and Corn Chower', but that's the only typo I've spotted. The pencil drawings and quotes are quite charming. I haven't yet tried the bread and other 'accompaniments' recipes in the back, but they look intriguing.
In short: if you like soup but not meat, and are looking for ideas for simple but very good meals on the light side, this book is an outstanding choice.

Lowfat Cooking for Dummies Review

Lowfat Cooking for Dummies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a very good source of information on low fat cooking. My family responded pleasently to many of the recipies although some were a little bland. The important thing is that this book teaches you how to make your own low fat dishes by substituting the stuff with high fat content in your favorite recipies with low fat ingredients. I especially liked the section devoted to learning and using herbs-- an important mainstay in any lowfat diet.

If a skimpy salad doused with a tasteless dressing is your idea of lowfat dining, hold on to your calorie counter. Lowfat cooking has come a long way. In fact, many of your high-calorie food favorites have an enticing, healthier equivalent in a lowfat version. Think chili. Potato pancakes. Or even cheesecake. It's true. If done right, bite for bite, lowfat cooking can be as generous in flavor as its high-fat counterpart. And once you (and your body) have begun to sample the benefits of a lowfat menu, chances are you'll turn lowfat cooking into a permanent lifestyle change.
With the help of Lynn Fischer, celebrated host of two TV cooking shows, Lowfat Cooking For Dummies helps you prepare meals worthy of a high-class health spa. In practically no time, you'll see how simple and fun it is to slenderize your kitchen pantry and get your cooking regimen in gear. From finding hidden fats to reading labels, the book gives you the skinny on:
Cholesterol, saturated fats, trans fatty acids—what they are and where they come from
What "lowfat," "fat-free," and "reduced fat" really mean
Tips on stocking a lowfat pantry—including what canned and packaged foods to keep (including pretzels, popcorn, chips, and cookies!)
What oils, condiments, and flavorings to use—including a table of oils indicating saturated fat content and a comprehensive list of herbs and their uses
Meat, poultry, fish, and eggs—tips on finding sources of lowfat red meat, what lean really means, and telling "good" eggs from "bad"

Plus Lowfat Cooking For Dummies brings you quickly up to speed on the joys of lowfat cooking—making your transition into a lowfat menu as delicious as it is painless. You'll reexperience old favorites like French Toast or a BLT or Oatmeal Raisin Cookies and discover how cutting calories in no way impairs taste. And you'll get a fresh reinvigorating take on traditionally healthy salads, as well as a host of entrees:
One-pot Soups and Casseroles—including Chicken Soup with Vegetables, Lentil Soup, Chili, and Pork and Garbanzo Bean Stew
Fish and shellfish—including Cod with Ginger-Orange Sauce, Herbed Mahi Mahi, and Shrimp and Crab Gumbo
Meat and poultry—including Meat Loaf, Sweet and Sour Pork, and Roast Chicken
Sandwiches—including Chicken Salad, Deviled Ham, Egg Salad, Feta Cheese Hamburgers, and Grilled Cheese

The book is chockfull of hints on how to turn usually high-fat fare like Hollandaise Sauce and White Sauce into something light and tasty. Desserts such as Strawberry Cheesecake and Peach and Blackberry Tart can, at last, be enjoyed as a guilt-free pleasure. Brimming with suggestions for healthy, lowfat eating on every page.

Enlightened Cakes: More Than 100 Decadently Light Layer Cakes, Bundt Cakes, Cupcakes, Cheesecakes, and More, All with Less Fat and Fewer Calories

This is a wonderful addition to any dessert lover's library, as well as for anyone looking to bake beautiful and delicious cakes that have all the flavor but not 1000 calories per slice. The pictures, though small, are gorgeous, and made me want to jump right in. There is so much variety in this book, the recipes are very detailed and easy to follow, and most importantly, the four recipes I have tried since the arrival of my book came out absolutely perfectly (the plum crumble cake is going to be a new standard in our house; we have a plum tree and everyone who tried this cake was blown away. Two good friends, avid bakers themselves, were incredulous when I told them it was a "lighter" cake).
I was skeptical about the lighter cheesecakes (as a native New Yorker, I have high standards for my beloved cheesecake), so I tried both the sour cream cheesecake and the wildflower honey cheesecake. Both were gorgeous, perfect, and everything a cheesecake should be. I'm convinced.
I have watched Ms. Saulsbury win multiple major cookoffs on the Food Network over the years, and already thought she was a genius; this beautiful book is but further proof of her talent. A highly recommended book--Brava!

Sinfully Vegan: More than 160 Decadent Desserts to Satisfy Every Sweet Tooth Review

Sinfully Vegan: More than 160 Decadent Desserts to Satisfy Every Sweet Tooth
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
To begin: I love this book. Love, love, love. I do have one complaint, though. With 140 recipes, it's going to take me forever to try them all! Especially since I just want to keep making my favorites over and over again.
Anyway, I could gush for hours about how great the recipes themselves are. [The Richer Than Fort Knox Cake was a huge hit at my husband's workplace. Everyone was shocked that 1) it wasn't from a bakery, and 2) it was 100% vegan. And I always love showing people that you don't deprive yourself of good things by making vegan choices.] But before I get carried away, I'd like to point how how much I love the organization of the book. Each recipe is divided into simple steps, and recipes are subdivided into sections--like the cake, the frosting, the garnish, etc. Also, Ms. Dieterly includes serving info, prep and baking time, and nutritional information, and also notes whether the recipe freezes well. And for those with wheat allergies, all of the wheat-free recipes are specifically marked as such.
She has recipes for the following dessert categories: cookies and brownies; cakes and quick breads; Boston cream pies; pies and tarts; cheesecakes; puddings; donuts and candy; beverages and smoothies; and frostings, toppings, and crusts. Sadly, there are no vegan ice cream recipes. But I'll be so busy eating brownies and cheesecakes and donuts, I won't have time for ice cream anyway!
The ingredients she uses should be familiar to most vegan cooks, and I don't have any trouble finding them. However, if you're new to vegan baking or live in an area where it's difficult to find, for example, silken tofu, then the author provides an introduction to the vegan ingredients you'll need, as well as a list of mail-order companies from which you can purchase the necessary ingredients. And if you're still searching, a quick Google search can reveal numerous places on-line to purchase vegan foodstuffs.
Finally, I'd just like to comment on the writing style. I really enjoy reading the author's recipe descriptions and other comments. She's clear and informative, but also sounds like a friend who's hanging out in your kitchen while you're baking.
All in all, this is a great cookbook. Buy it and amaze your friends with your delicious--and compassionate--desserts.

I purchased this book because we have cholesterol issues in the family, and so far, I've made 3 or 4 recipes involving beef. They've been very dry and not visually appealing (with kids, this is important!:)) I've found most of the entrees have been time consuming to prepare as well, lots of ingredients. Truthfully, the only thing I'm enjoying from the book is the information in the beginning about cholesterol and how it affects your health- lots of great informative points on this but the recipes are just not very tasty. I also own American Heart Association's Meals in Minutes, which is much better.

Healthy Food For Healthy Kids: An A-Z of Nutritional Know-How for the Well-Fed Family Review

Healthy Food For Healthy Kids: An A-Z of Nutritional Know-How for the Well-Fed Family
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book because I don't like to cook but, gee, had to feed the kids. This book offered quick, very simple recipes that included ingredients I would have on hand. I also liked the variety of recipes that give me an opportunity to expose my kids to different foods disguised in more recognizable dishes (not just with pasta or in casseroles). Great for meal ideas, includes a lot of info on feeding suggestions--a good read. I wouldn't recommend for children under 1 year old since this is the pivotal age for many food allergies. 4 stars because this book tries to cover all bases by including info on breastfeeding and baby feeding, pages I would rather have seen spent on more great recipes. Includes monthly meal planner, handy meal quickies, and fat/cal/chol/vitamin/mineral breakdowns for each recipe.

I've recently become a vegetarian (within the last 2 months) and I cannot rave about this book enough! I've bought about 6-7 vegetarian cookbooks recently and this one takes the cake. It is definitely worth the investment. . . . and your carnivorous friends will like the recipes as well! Bobbie Hinman includes so many different types of recipes that you'll never get bored. The directions are very thorough and it's even notated on each recipe which type of vegetarian diet it falls under (i.e. V for vegan (no dairy), O for octo, etc.)
If you buy any vegetarian cookbook, let it be this one. It's great for a beginner like myself and the recipes are fantastic. . . . they really help bridge the gap for a new veggie.

The Best-Kept Secrets of Healthy Cooking: Your Culinary Resource to Hundreds of Delicious Kitchen-Tested Dishes

Most of my dessert recipes are Julia Child-style rich, but I recently got this book from the library to see how well I could make low-fat, whole-wheat baking work (I've been baking since I was 8 and use mostly my own recipes). Yesterday I made my usual white flour, high-fat, high-sugar banana bread for my entire office, which everyone loved. Today I made the whole wheat Brown Sugar Banana Bread from the bread section of this cookbook, without the nuts, and the ENTIRE office is raving about it! Everyone ate both kinds and declared this one just as good, if not better. I also got a number of her other cookbooks and have been VERY impressed with the recipes. Definitely a must-have for any kitchen.

I gave it a 3 star review because ii is IDENTICAL to the 2006 edition. I have just sat and compared the indexes for both books and so far have found NO difference. In fact, the cover picture for this edition is the picture from page 241 in the 2006 edition.
However, if you are looking for a good Betty Crocker meets WW type cookbook, then either edition (since they are the same) will fit the bill nicely and be a good addition to any WW'ers kitchens :)

The Gluten-Free Gourmet Cooks Fast and Healthy: Wheat-Free and Gluten-Free with Less Fuss and Less Fat
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I read all the reviews before I bought this book and assumed it was a good book for people allergic to gluten looking for 'healthy' recipes. If you consider brown sugar, confectioner's sugar, white sugar, corn syrup, margarine, Butter Flavored Crisco, canned vegetables, and soda 'healthy' ingredients then by all means this book is for you. But, if you're like me and have health problems then I would suggest not buying this book. You'd be better off buying prepared gluten free flour and adapting recipes you already have.
Many of the meat and vegetable recipes are just wasting space in the book. How hard is it to prepare poached salmon, three bean salad, or cole slaw without gluten?
I am returning the book to Amazon because I cannot use it.

This book has really great recipes. There are some simple recipes as well as those that are more time consuming. You have to enjoy cooking, which I do...and you have to want to be in the kitchen for at least 45 min. in order to prepare the meals. They turn out to be so delicious; it's definitely worth the time and effort especially if you're trying to keep a healthy eating habit. The portions aren't rediculously large and the taste is definitely satisfying! This book is highly recommended by me
