The Sweet Potato Lover's Cookbook: More than 100 ways to enjoy one of the world's healthiest foods Review

The Sweet Potato Lover's Cookbook: More than 100 ways to enjoy one of the world's healthiest foods
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These days, I think published cook books need better formatting and illustration in order to compete against the resources that are already available through an internet search. This nice little book on sweet potatoes would have benefited greatly from some color photographs - especially since it is basically a revised and updated edition of The Sweet Potato Cookbook. As it stands, the only color photos are on the front and back cover. If I were considering this book as a gift for someone - say for my diabetic father or anyone moving away from white potatoes for health reasons - I would be unhappy with this purchase. While it is full of recipes, it lacks visual appeal. There are a few drawn illustrations but they do little to educate or inspire, in my opinion.
The recipes range from super simple mashed sweet potatoes to exotic desserts like Lime Sweet Potato Chiffon Pie (boy, I sure would have loved to see what that looks like). There are small fact and history sections in the front that I found interesting. Such as putting cut sweet potatoes in salt water to keep them from browning. Recipes are divided up into the traditional categories: appetizers, beverages, soups, salads, breads, breakfasts, main dishes, side dishes, friendship recipes (recipes shared by friends)and some international selections in the Around the World chapter. There's a wide variety here to choose from and since I bought this for my own use, I am not unhappy with my purchase. It will benefit anyone who would like to learn more about cooking this super food - to include the traditional methods.
It should be noted that this is not a vegan, vegetarian or even a diabetic cook book. While some of the recipes certainly fall into those categories, others include items like milk, eggs, meat, bacon drippings, etc... Beyond including the sweet potato as an ingredient, the recipes have little else in common - no "theme" to offer those who have specific dietary requirements. The subtitle of the book is: "More than 100 ways to Enjoy One of the World's Healthiest Foods" - unfortunately, many of the recipes include decidedly unhealthy ingredients. While perhaps better for you than alternatives, Sweet Potato Doughnuts, for example, are still just deep fried dough. There's a little bit of everything in this collection.
A 3 star review doesn't mean this is a bad cook book. Amazon defines a 3 star review as "OK".

A Painter's Kitchen-Revised Edition: Recipes from the Kitchen of Georgia O'Keeffe (Red Crane Cookbook Series) Review

A Painter's Kitchen-Revised Edition: Recipes from the Kitchen of Georgia O'Keeffe (Red Crane Cookbook Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a fan of Ms. O'Keeffe's since the seventies and even more so once the late Ansel Adams befriended our young son in the eighties, I wanted this cook book because I loved the simplicity of her art work and wanted to see if this carried over into her food choices. Am not disappointed.
Yes, many of the recipes are simple and direct like corn on the bob or kale. But the recipes for Fried Flowers (locust blossoms), Curried Chicken, Biscochitos, and Zabaglione are wonderful. Even wonder if she ever had squash blooms tempura style.
The book is a fun read as well, since the Introduction allows us to learn why she liked certain foods, disliked eating out, what she grew in her large vegetable gardens and how her kitchens were laid out and what they had in them.

4 Ingredients: More Than 400 Quick, Easy, and Delicious Recipes Using 4 or Fewer Ingredients Review

4 Ingredients: More Than 400 Quick, Easy, and Delicious Recipes Using 4 or Fewer Ingredients
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
`4 Ingredients' has as its' purpose meals that are quick to prepare, using, of course only 4 ingredients and fewer utensils so there is less time used for clean up. There are optional hints, such as this freezes well or good to serve with....
There are recipes for; breakfast, appetizers, sauces and salsas, lunch, sides, main dishes, desserts, for children, and drinks. A list of staples for the pantry is included, combination meals, and home tips - like put baby teething gel on your eyebrows to avoid pain when plucking them.
Some recipes turn out not quite the way you assume they should taste like, such as scones using lemonade in the ingredients. Others are good ideas that turn out to be hits like curry in deviled eggs. These are simplistic meals, but many recipes such as the ever popular spinach dip suffers from a lack of spring onions and chopped water chestnuts since that would have put too many ingredients in it. The flavors are not dense or complex, but for simple fast meals it does what it sets out to do. With a bit more time and effort they could be so much more, but then they wouldn't be as fast or simple - the choice is yours.
These are very undemanding recipes, a beginning cook or someone who really does not enjoy the process would probably find this a useful book.

Recipes From Ladybug Farm: A Companion Cookbook Review

Recipes From Ladybug Farm: A Companion Cookbook

On the third page of this book is the following statement: "Note: This book is intended as a novelty only. Many of the recipes included herein have not been tested, and the author makes no claims regarding their accuracy or their originality."
Neither of the reviews on the Amazon page mention this fact.
That said, the recipes look fairly standard and most would probably turn out OK.
I just resent buying a cookbook only to receive it and find out that it's a "novelty".

A House Called Awful End: Book One in the Eddie Dickens Trilogy Review

A House Called Awful End: Book One in the Eddie Dickens Trilogy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My dyslexic son bought this book and the sequel while we were in
Oxford, England and we absolutely loved them. We could readily picture all of the characters and the things they were involved in. My son was 11 at the time and loved having it read to him every night. We have just purchased our first Lemony Snicket book as we grew tired of waiting for the final book in this trilogy. Perhaps we found it so entertaining as I am an upper elementary teacher and his father a middle school teacher and we know these characters on a personal level. It is well worth exploring. I have also read it to my students and they beg for more.

Make-Ahead Meals Made Healthy: Exceptionally Delicious and Nutritious Freezer-Friendly Recipes You Can Prepare in Advance and Enjoy at a Moment's Notice Review

Make-Ahead Meals Made Healthy: Exceptionally Delicious and Nutritious Freezer-Friendly Recipes You Can Prepare in Advance and Enjoy at a Moment's Notice
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I like the concept of making meals ahead and having them in the freezer for those busy times or when I just don't feel like cooking. An issue I've had with some make-ahead cookbooks is that so many of the recipes rely on canned condensed "cream of" soups and other processed ingredients, and end up being high in fat, starches, and sodium.
This cookbook is different with its focus on real, healthier ingredients, all of which can be found at any larger grocery store. The recipes themselves are not complicated so cooks of any level will be able to master them. Included are casseroles, meats, poultry, and seafood; soups, stews, and chilis; side dishes and vegetarian options, breads, rolls, and pizzas; appetizers, breakfast dishes, desserts, and sauces and condiments.
The book starts with helpful tips on freezing and organizing for a cooking session. While one doesn't have to spend an entire day cooking for a month, suggestions are given for making multiple dishes at the same time in order to have several meals ready for the week(s) ahead.
There are several recipes I look forward to trying, including an unusual butternut squash and chard lasgagne, three-bean Italian minestrone soup, turkey sausage and broccoli rabe calzones, low-carb mini quiche, creamy turkey casserole with broccoli and cauliflower, raspberry-lavender crumb cake, and dark chocolate mint cake. I did make a modified version of the All-Occasion Sloppy Janes recipe with good results.
There are many color photographs which always makes a cookbook nicer and although it isn't spiral bound, it does lay open while in use which I also appreciate. This is a cookbook I recommend for those who like to plan ahead and have meals ready in the freezer that are also healthy.
I received a copy of this book for review from the publisher but the opinion of it is my own and was not solicited, nor was a positive review required.

I Love Trader Joe's College Cookbook: 150 Cheap and Easy Gourmet Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While the title points this book towards the college crowd I would like to point it toward the work-at-home-full-time-dad-crowd, I know there are some of us out there.
I've had this cookbook a week now and have used it more than probably all my others combined. I love the one stop shopping aspect: all ingredients are at Trader Joes which is also affordable. The recipes are easy: more than a few of the ones I have made so far have made me say "why didn't I think of that" - the answer is because I am not Andrea Lynn and she deserves the credit. The recipes are delicious, period.
I remember being excited when my local Trader Joe's opened but I felt a little lost, thanks to this book not only have a rekindled my excitement for Trader Joe's but I now have the time to shop and prepare meals that are tasty and satisfying. I've even remembered to eat lunch this week and I didn't even have to wait until my daughter fell asleep to prepare it. Now if you'll excuse me I am off to make a Very Berry Smoothie.
PS I recommend the Pork Buns with Broccoli Slaw, The Avocado Toast, Parmesan and Bread Crumb-Crusted Tomatoes, Chicken Salad-stuffed Tomatoes and well pretty much everything else I made this week.

The Tassajara Bread Book Review

The Tassajara Bread Book

If you want to live simply but not blandly, this is the only bread book you need. Written in a gentle voice, this book encourages all to bake wholesome, delicious breads - sweet and savory - and love every bite. Now, I have many bread cookbooks and I do love all of them - from Elizabeth David to Amy to Laurel - but I cannot stress how much pure enjoyment and encouragement I've gotten from this modest tome. Reading his words and following his advice (which is open and even inexact at times) has always led me to greater independence and faith in my own instincts and never fails to turn out wonderful results!

I recently purchased this book, finally had the opportunity to try a recipe yesterday and enjoyed it so much, made another batch of muffins today. The book is organized according to muffin type - there are regular muffins (carrot, chocolate chip, blueberry, etc.), fancy, celebratory muffins for special occasions, savory muffins (with veggies, meats, cheese) and my favorite at the end, healthy muffins. They all utilize common ingredients, and so far, they've come out tasty and moist (and don't last very long in this house)! I look forward to trying out more of these recipes, as I adore muffins!

I thought I was buying the Otis Spunkmeyer chocolate chunk cookie dough. These cookies were pre-formed and not very tasty. I am disappointed. The pre-formed cookies tasted like play-dough with chocolate chunks. The cookie dough is really a lot better tasting. And the price? Waaaay to much...but I was desperate because I could not find them anywhere. Costco and Lucky Foods used to carry the frozen dough, but don't anymore. All in all, I would not purchase these cookies again.

Miracle Muffins Mix - Banana - Make 12/36 muffins - Splenda Review

Miracle Muffins Mix - Banana - Make 12/36 muffins - Splenda
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These muffins are delicious, nutritious, and (best for me) very easy to make! Banana was not overly sweet and didn't have that "fake" banana taste.
They are choc-full of all those really healthy ingredients that should not taste good together, but they do. They may *seem* pricey, but I've tried creating muffin-like-thingees like this on my own and it wasn't cheap. And it wasn't easy. And they didn't taste this good.
I'll be the first to admit they don't taste like the muffins grandma made. But these won't contribute to heart disease, diabetes, and obesity, either.
These are very filling and can hold you as well as a meal in a pinch. Very fiberfilled! Since we are on a diet, we take them on trips to curb those crazy eating habits away from home.
I've tried both the Splenda & the Xylitol versions and they are equally good. Splenda is sweeter but Xylitol is slightly more moist.
Be sure to let the wet dough "rest" for 10 minutes per the instructions. I suspect this may be the reason one of the other reviewers reported that his muffins were hard as rocks.
