Secrets of Good Carb / Low Carb Living Review

Secrets of Good Carb / Low Carb Living
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have most of Sandra Woodruff's books and I haven't found a bad recipe yet. This book is no exception. The California Club Wraps are to die for. They were so good that I made them several days in a row. I also tried the Chipotle Black Bean Chili, which was excellent. My husband is a picky eater and generally hates diet food, but he loves everything I've made from Sandra Woodruff cookbooks. I frequently serve her recipes to company and no one can guess they're low-fat and healthy. This particular book also has lots of common-sense advice on doing a low-carb diet and offers two versions, one for a quick start and another for a diet with more carbs. Both give two weeks of menus.

From the top-selling author of The Good Carb Cookbook comes a comprehensive and motivating guide to the good-carb lifestyle. Lately, low-carb diets have been all the rage, but until recently little scientific research has been available regarding their effectiveness and potential health consequences. Now, studies are proving that low-carb diets do work and, contrary to popular belief, they don't pose health risks-if they are done right. But with so many diets to choose from, it is hard for many people to find a program that is realistic for their lifestyle and to which they can adhere. Nationally recognized nutritionist Sandra Woodruff demystifies the process and explains how anyone can tailor a low-carb plan to their individual needs to achieve long-term weight loss. She provides hundreds of delicious recipes, innovative menu plans, instructive cooking tips, and helpful advice for eating out. The healthy eating plan in Secrets of Good-Carb/Low-Carb Living includes lean proteins, healthy fats, and good carbs to not only lose weight but also to lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels and help correct metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. Now anyone can get better results from their low-carb diet or formulate a new eating plan specifically for their needs. With Sandra Woodruff, low-carb living never tasted so good!

Fantastic Food with Splenda: 160 Great Recipes for Meals Low in Sugar, Carbohydrates, Fat, and Calories Review

Fantastic Food with Splenda: 160 Great Recipes for Meals Low in Sugar, Carbohydrates, Fat, and Calories
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I came on line to order this amazing book for my friend on the South Beach Diet and was so suprised to see someone question it's accuracy because I am a Weight Watcher (points are in the book), and hate labels that lie! First of all in my copy, that I got a couple weeks back, the first recipe - Strawberry Lemonade- has the ingredients and I did not see a lot of typo's - so hers must have been a bad copy. I did find the 0 grams on the "compare" page - but it is clearly just an innocent mistake. The page highlights that Ms. Koch's Cinnamon Pancakes and Apple Butter Syrup have 11 grams of fat and then "compares" them to regular pancakes and syrup with 3 pats of butter. Since it clearly (in a box) says YOU SAVE: 9 grams of fat - along with 56 carbs, 195 calories and 7 points!!! by having hers instead of the "usual" pancakes and syrup you can see the fat grams on the high fat and sugar comparison should have been 20 (not 0). Yet, just to be sure I re-calculated several recipes with my own nutrition calculator, and they were all perfect - no errors - with accurate data and weight watcher points.
More important - this book not only has great food - Chai Tea, Pumpkin Muffins, a bunch of great Coleslaws, Spinach Salad (with hot bacon dressing), Sloppy Joes, ice creams and even Cheesecake for breakfast - every single recipe I have made has been easy and delicious. It is the first book I have found that does such a good job cutting the fat along with the sugar and carbs and that has good recipes for everyday use (and a bunch for the holidays). I am ordering another book, and her dessert book, as soon as I finish this review and recommend you do so too. You will not be disappointed.

The Good Carb Cookbook: Secrets of Eating Low on the Glycemic Index Review

The Good Carb Cookbook: Secrets of Eating Low on the Glycemic Index
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I cannot say enough good things about this book. I wish I could give a copy to everyone I know. Not only are the recipes the most delicious healthy foods we've ever made, but Sandra Woodruff explains the nutritional and health reasons for eating good carbs in simple, easy-to-understand language. She emphasizes moderation. Her recipes are followed by nutritional information, including whether they are extremely low GI, low GI, or moderate GI.
The first third of the book is all information you need to know about why traditional fat-free eating isn't making people thinner or healthier, but fatter and unhealthier. For the past 20 years, the food industry has been touting fat-free this and fat-free that..."eat pretzels, gummi bears, eat fat-free, and you'll be fat-free". It's nonsense.
Woodruff explains how and why to eat low on the Glycemic Index. She gives you tons of ideas for low GI breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. She includes low GI options for eating out at nearly every possible type of restaurant- Italian, Indian, Thai- you name it. She also gives a few examples of real people, their situations, and how they changed their health by eating low GI. Not only does this book give you sound nutritional advice (the author is a Registered Dietician), but she also includes over 200 phenomenally delicious recipes.
Eat wholesome real foods, watch what kinds of fats you cook with, exercise, and you will lose weight. Most importantly, though- YOUR BODY WILL LOVE YOU. And your doctor will be thrilled! My husband, who was already exercising regularly, has lost 20 lbs in 6 weeks just by changing to eating low on the Glycemic Index- "Good Carbs". I have also lost 20 pounds in 6 weeks by changing my diet and including exercise. Changing our diet has giving us so much more energy. We feel fantastic.
Do yourself a favor and pick up this book! I researched all the low-carb, no-carb, low-sugar, Zone, Busters, etc... books ... and decided after reading all the information and reviews, to purchase this one. I am so glad I did! You will be too. You owe yourself an energetic, long life. BUY THIS BOOK.

Dana Carpender's NEW Carb and Calorie Counter-Expanded, Revised, and Updated 4th Edition: Your Complete Guide to Total Carbs, Net Carbs, Calories, and More Review

Dana Carpender's NEW Carb and Calorie Counter-Expanded, Revised, and Updated 4th Edition: Your Complete Guide to Total Carbs, Net Carbs, Calories, and More
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
She is the reigning queen of low-carb cuisine and for good reason-Dana Carpender knows her stuff when it comes to easily making a carbohydrate-restricted eating plan a part of a normal, everyday way of life. While the media and health pundits choose to denigrate low-carbohydrate nutrition for whatever their reasons, people like Dana just keep living by example and sharing with the world the knowledge and experience she has attained as a decade-plus low-carb veteran. And more than anything else, she recognizes that people need help keeping track of their carbohydrate and calorie intake which is why she's released Dana Carpender's NEW Carb and Calorie Counter-Expanded, Revised, and Updated 4th Edition: Your Complete Guide to Total Carbs, Net Carbs, Calories, and More.
When a book has been through four updates and revisions, you know it's a useful tool for people and this book is no exception. In typical Dana Carpender style, whose line of low-carb cookbooks are heralded by any serious low-carb dieter, she starts off by telling you the basics of livin' la vida low-carb and how to make the most of her 350-page mass paperback book. Useful tips, health checklists, common health problems improved by low-carb nutrition, ways to enhance your low-carb lifestyle, and gentle encouragement dominate the first 30 pages.
It's a great refresher course for those of us who have been eating this way for a long time or an outstanding introduction to a whole new way to think about healthy eating for those who are new to carbohydrate-restriction. I especially liked her section "10 Great Snacks for 5 grams of Net Carbs Or Less!" to help all you road trippers know exactly what to bring with you to stick with your low-carb plan. She even does the same for national fast-food and popular sit down restaurants telling you EXACTLY what to order at places like Burger King, Hardee's, Denny's, KFC and even Pizza Hut! This is a nice book to keep in the glove compartment of your car for speedy reference while traveling.
The bulk of the book is in a table format with the name of the food or beverage, serving size, calories, total carbs, fiber, net carbs, protein, and fat listed for each. It begins with 16 pages of beverages, then 107 pages of common foods you would purchase for your family to eat, and finally nearly 200 pages of all the nutritional information about the foods you would order at a restaurant. I suppose it's a sign of our times that restaurants would receive nearly DOUBLE the amount of space in a book like this, but I'm all about arming people with information that will help them make better choices for the sake of their health. And Dana has done just that with this newly updated version of her carb and calorie counter book.

For more than half of all children with epilepsy, the only reliable way to control seizures is through the ketogenic diet, a rigid regimen that strictly limits both calories and liquid intake. Keto Kid details the daily management of the diet - where one extra bite of food can have serious repercussions on a child's health - while also addressing the emotional struggle children encounter with the loss of their favorite foods and the necessity of learning rigorous self-denial at a very young age. The book also provides recipes for keto-friendly meals and tips for making this limited diet more interesting; time-saving strategies such as pre-weighing and freezing meals; and a day-by-day account of life on the ketogenic diet; and more. Calm, direct, and above all, hopeful, Snyder helps families successfully adopt the diet while making the experience as pleasant as possible for both child and parent.

Eating Stella Style: Low-Carb Recipes for Healthy Living
Average Reviews:

I'm a real Stella fan as you can read by my review of his first book. Either one will give you the basics to shed the pounds and keep them off with sensible low-carb life, not counting, but shopping wise and cooking really good food that'll work.
Again, my fascination and usage of George's books are especially for breakfast and lunch and snacks, for these and maybe you are the toughest for this reviewer to keep it creative and healthy. This collection is like his first, just outstanding. You'll enjoy such as: Riviera Omelet (with prochiutto or Parma; Southwestern Breakfast Bites; Cinanamon Toast Pancakes!!!!; Chirstian's Banana Bread Muffins; Uncle Al's Sausage and Peppers Casserole; Kim's Stuffed Chicken Breasts with Lemony White Wine Sauce; Thai Scallop and Prawn Stir-Fry; Roasted Pecan and Herb-Crusted Salmon; Forzen Custard Ice Cream.
Did I mention great Entrees and Desserts as well! Each recipe is not only given the needful nutrition breakouts and good instructions, but each further has "Make It Memorable" and "Healthful Hint" sections. These are really neat, as it has other menu recipe ideas and differences with those on rapid diet descent.
With some nice color photos and all the aids you'll need to keep on low-carb track, this is nice resource for our culinary time.

The Atkins Shopping Guide: Indispensable Tips and Guidelines for Successfully Stocking Your Low-carb Kitchen Review

The Atkins Shopping Guide: Indispensable Tips and Guidelines for Successfully Stocking Your Low-carb Kitchen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, my credentials: I lost fifty pounds on this diet. This is a review of this guide, not of the diet.
The beginning part of the book gives a brief, peppy rundown on the diet itself. It has some good information, but the tone is irritating. The phrase 'doing Atkins' may be colloquially understood, but it sounds amateurish and is heavily overused. No opportunity to pimp Atkins brand products is passed up. The result had me on edge by the time I began reading the actual shopping guide, and then it got worse.
The useful parts are those dealing with raw foods, ones that don't involve 'branding' (that's corporate newspeak for "ramming the product name into your head and keeping it there," folks): fruits, basic meats, cheeses. Gouda is gouda; tofu is tofu; beets are beets. Unfortunately, even these parts suffer from some degree of measurement inconsistency.
If you're going to compare nutritional facts from item to item, you have to use the same size portions for each item in a class. It is no good referring to 1/2 cup of most vegetables, then switching to 'half a baked potato' or 'two tablespoons'. Sure, the reader can convert, but isn't that why I bought the book? Pick a half cup and stick with it. Or an ounce. A ton. I don't care, as long as it's consistent, and the book's measurements are often so inconsistent as to be impractical for reference.
Where the book really begins to go south is when it comes to any form of 'branded' food. Atkins Nutritionals, or whichever branch of the Atkins empire put this out, has naturally listed Atkins brand products first in every category. Okay, fine, we're big kids and can read past this obvious shill; but even so, a lot of the other name brand products evaluated are going to change as the market reacts. That's going to make a big chunk of this book obsolete. Plus, the obvious placement of Atkins brand stuff first leaves a lingering suspicion: how did they choose the brands for the book? I can't find a lot of them on my local shelves. Is it possible that the ones chosen were those that would look undesirable relative to Atkins brand products? I don't know; I'm not a professional nutritionist or supermarket chain buyer. All I know is that the array of choices sure makes the Atkins stuff look like the best in every category. Funny how that worked, eh?
The problem with low-carb dieting, at this writing, is that our food providers have decided to brand a lot of their products with the 'low-carb' label, as if merely saying so will make it so. The guide states, correctly, that this stems from a lack of regulation. A balanced, professionally written guide would have been a great step forward; the message urged upon the reader from nearly every page of this book--"Just buy ours!"--is a step backward.
Like any sales brochure, this should be free. Don't pay $7.50 for it.

The Carb Lovers Diet: Eat What You Love, Get Slim For Life Review

The Carb Lovers Diet: Eat What You Love, Get Slim For Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We can probably thank Dr. Atkins for creating the belief that "carbs" and not money is the root of all evil. There is just one problem that comes up. I have never known anyone that has been able to stay away from cars long term.
The Carb Lovers Diet tells us that carbohydrates are not the enemy when it comes to losing weight. In fact, eating the right types of carbohydrates can help you drop pounds, since they can help curb your cravings, preserve lean muscle tissue (which can keep your metabolism from dropping) and control your blood sugar levels (so your body stores fewer excess calories as unwanted body fat.)
The real hero in this book is called "resistant starches". It seems that different types of starches digest at different speeds. Resistant starches will pass through the body without being digested, similar to fiber. This does sound like a dream come true, doesn't it? The book suggests raising the average of 4.8 grams of daily resistant starches to 10 to 15 grams through various carb-based recipes.
Here are the 5 rules for winning the carb game:
1. Eat at least one resistant starch-rich food (called CarbStars) at every meal
2. CarbStars should make up about 25 percent of every meal. The rest of your calories coming from lean meats, low-fat dairy products, healthy fats, fruits and vegetables (in other words, cut out the junk food.)
3. Watch your portion sizes (brilliant!).
4) Don't deprive yourself, but use moderation for the bad foods.

5) Create a power pantry (stock up on CarbStar foods).
The first 7 days allows only 1,200 calories a day divided among four small meals. The second portion of the program (21 days) allows for to 1,600 calories divided among five small meals.
This program really follows the idea of a calorie-restrictive, nutrient-dense, fiber-rich diet, which is actually a great way to eat. The book offers 85 recipes with a colorful picture of every meal, which makes the meals seem more visually desirable. Haven't you done that in a restaurant when you see some food go by? Of course, the program also includes exercise, which is a great idea.
Bottom Line
The Carb Lovers Diet follows the usual plan of most diet books, although it is a fresh approach that may help you rethink how to eat better and exercise more. It is solid advice that will work if you stick to it. The big letdown for me was that it doesn't really live up to its title. If you love those sinful unhealthy carbs (ice cream, chocolate, cookies), you may still face the same challenges you had before. If you came here looking for a magic fix for eating bad foods and losing weight, you will have to look elsewhere. If you are looking for good advice on healthy weight loss, you have found it.

The South Beach Diet Super Quick Cookbook: 200 Easy Solutions for Everyday Meals Review

The South Beach Diet Super Quick Cookbook: 200 Easy Solutions for Everyday Meals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ok, I admit it I am on a diet. And yes, it is even The South Beach Diet. I have lost 75 Lbs in the first year and I`ve been on it over 2 years! But even if I was not on South Beach I'd recommend this new cookbook because I am a busy gal. I always have been. Presently, I have 2 jobs working over 12 hrs a day. So, while I love to cook, I don't want to spend the balance of my free time in the kitchen. Quick, Easy and Yummy have great appeal to me.
While I have over 300 cookbooks in my collection, the ones that help me maintain my health are the ones I now treasure. This new addition will rank with the best because it also respects the limited time I have to cook a healthy menu.
The new South Beach Super Quick Cookbook is a wealth of information and tips. There is Grab and Go, Budget Shopping Tips; Reworking of Old favorites and Cook Once, Eat Twice. Each topic enhances the concept of saving time. In addition, all the recipes can be made within 30 minutes.
When I saw the recipe for Black Bean Brownies (page 245) I reflected on how I had learned about this technique from another member years ago. I thought at the time: "How gross". But later I learned that once you puree any bean, it is very similar to an egg flour mixture. In this cookbook I was also was thrilled to find an acceptable Hash Brown substitution with Jicama Hash Browns (page 223 ) I have used Jicama in salads but never thought of using it this way. Brilliant !
Dieting for me is not about "doing without". It is about "doing with" flavors and healthful choices. A big bonus from this cookbook is the time it gives me to enjoy the benefits. The Super Quick Cookbook allows me to do it all!
Whether on a diet or not, those who care about eating healthier will enjoy this new addition to the South Beach Cookbook library. It is family friendly, single friendly and right on target for all of our busy schedules.
So, I don't know what you are doing tonight, but I am making Black Bean Brownies and taking them to work. I can hardly wait to tell them they just ate beans, they'll never believe it !

The South Beach Diet Cookbook Review

The South Beach Diet Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you've read the South Beach Diet, it did include some preliminary recipe ideas, but they were few and far between. This follow-up cookbook is being marketed as if it were looking to dovetail on the popularity of its predecessor, but I believe if you have this, you don't even need the original.
The variety of recipes is fascinating, and the diet phase they correspond to in the original diet (which you can easily comprehend from this book alone) is clearly marked.
Mind you, this is not a "low carb" book. It is about lowering "bad" carbs while allowing "good" carbs. The South Beach idea veers around keeping the Glycemic Index low and Agatston does a pretty good job of explaining the nutritional logic for doing so.
The recipes that I have tried so far are quite good in terms of taste. The best thing for me is that none of the recipes includes any fancy condiments that you'd only find in some super-elite department stores on the other side of town. Very handy for a health-conscious bachelor.
Give it a try. Healthy *and* tasty recipes can't be a bad investment anyway!

The long-awaited cookbook is here! Great food that's good for you--that's the foundation of the South Beach Diet and the reason millions of people around the world have adopted it as their lifelong eating plan, shedding unwanted pounds in the process. Created by leading Miami cardiologist Arthur Agatston, M.D., the diet emphasizes good fats and good carbohydrates, the kind that stave off cravings for unhealthy sugary food and promote long-term weight loss. It's not "diet" food--it's satisfying, flavorful dishes that are good for your health and your waistline. George Stella's Livin' Low Carb: Family Recipes Stella Style Review

George Stella's Livin' Low Carb: Family Recipes Stella Style

This is one of the best of the plethora of low carb cookbooks in the train that this glycemic index relevaltion has created.
Why one of the best? How about a family of four losing a combined total of 560 pounds on it? How about a gourmet chef who gives us what worked with them to achieve this? How about unique approach and recipes which apply this?
I was attracted to this after watching George on his FoodNetwork program. He is very humble, yet reliable credentialed chef who has experiemnted with many twists and combos of good cooking yet with low carb.
It avoids lots of the scientific stuff but emphasizes what must happen in pantry and cooking to achieve a healthier diet habit. Sugar and carbs are of course the focus. His approach is doable and the taste is exceptional. I especially like his approach with heavy cream, butter and low-carb foods.
What I find especially attractive is his breakfast section, one of the toughest meals of the day for most of us to habitually maintain healthy and yet one of the most important. So there is such variety and ease of prep here, with great muffin and omelet and blinis and quiche. Great advice to make them up in advance, freeze and then micro each morning with coffee. Try: "Ham and Cheddar Morning Muffins" or "George's Gorgeous Macadamia Banana Muffins" or "On-Hand Omelet."
The other menu sections are equally creative, filling and easy to prep: Grilled Country-Style Pork Ribs with Bourbon Barbecue Sauce; Ham and Mock Potato Soup; Chocolate Pecan Brownies with Cream Cheese Frosting; Jicama Matchstick Fries; Minute Steak Salad; Tequilla Chicken;
There are some 125 recipes in this collection, with easy to follow instructions and advice as well as some color photos. I appreciate the choice of paperback and resultant price for this. Great addition to one's collection or as only low carb source. Highly recommended.

The Belly Fat Cure: Discover the New Carb Swap System and Lose 4 to 9 lbs. Every Week Review

The Belly Fat Cure: Discover the New Carb Swap System and Lose 4 to 9 lbs. Every Week

Please, before you judge or listen to the negative reviews let me say something. I started working this plan when very little information was available about it May of 2009. I did it when there was no book and only limited information available via the internet. Basically I took the 15 sugar 6 carb idea from Jorge and ran with it. So far I have lost 60 lbs on the Belly Fat Cure and I plan to lose 30 more to reach my goal. Those people writing negative reviews just want to open a book and have the weight fall off their bodies. You have to take control and want this for yourself. Read the book for insight and understanding and not just to be led around like a puppet.
Second, I live in a rural area with no Whole Foods Market or anything around and have to travel far for a health food store or order online to get some of the items that are in book. But not all of them. Jorge just gives the healthiest options, but you can make substitutions. If something is not available in your area, use something else. Most of us don't know that these healthier products exist. We let the mainstream dictate what we are putting in our bodies and feeding to our children. What we should be doing instead of attacking Jorge is to demand that these healthier options be made more readily available to us in our local markets. A lot of what he proposes include no artificial sweetners because of their alleged negative affects. If this isn't a concern of yours then make a substitution that includes artificial sweetners. I'm sure Jorge wouldn't advocate this but I have to admit that I do use some of the products that are on his Belly Bad List. I make the food and the plan work for me. For instance, Jorge doesn't like sugar free puddings that you can buy on the shelf because of the artificial sweetners. I try to avoid the artificial sweetners as much as I can but if I want a chocolate pudding then I'll have one. No biggie. Personal choice, hello?
I do not have a ton of money and was actually unemployed when I started this way of eating last summer. Yes, I think of it as a way of eating - not a diet. This is how I live now. So to those who claim its expensive that's not true. It doesn't have to be. The recipes in the book are simple and great tasting. They include normal foods that you probably already eat now. Its just about making it in a healthier way and making better choices. Things you would never think you could eat while losing weight. You do not feel deprived at all. It really is a mindset change more than anything.
I'm shocked and amazed at the people who complain about it being full of recipes, menu plans, and product evaluations?? Really this has me baffled. Isn't that what we all need anyway - the meat and potatoes of the thing? While Jorge explains an overview of the science behind why the plan works, do you really want a book full of technical jargon and trials and studies? If you google Jorge Cruise or take a look at some of his Youtube videos....he has interviews on there with experts that explain more indepth about the dangers of sugar. This is serious business, folks. Check them out.
I really hope that people will try this way of eating and don't judge the book based on the negative reviews. Its a shame because I know that I rely heavily on amazon reviews for nearly everything but this is one instance where I can truly say the negative reviewers have it all wrong.
Thank you, Jorge, for your passion for health and bringing awareness to this nation. The book and your wisdom have been a blessing to me and my family.
