I bought this book through Rodale and paid WAY too much for it. Should have looked here first. That being said this is fast becoming the most used cookbook in our house.
We've made 4 recipes from it so far every last one of them has been:
1. Easy
2. Flavorful
3. Satisfying
I bookmarked 6 more recipes to try over the next week or so. Tonight's was Balsamic Chicken and it got the "please make this again" request from my husband.

Get the Sugar Out: 501 Simple Ways to Cut the Sugar Out of Any Diet Review

Get the Sugar Out: 501 Simple Ways to Cut the Sugar Out of Any Diet
Average Reviews:

I felt that this was an excellently written and was easy to read. I had read "Sugar Blues" immediately before this and "Get the Sugar Out" was most definitely a far superb book. It seemed to stick to the subject and appeared to stay more with facts. "Sugar Blues" seemed to be more opinionated and outdated. All in all "Get the Sugar Out" was very helpful and useful to me. After reading it I can certainly never look at sugar the same or eat it without feeling guilty. The book brings up points about sugar that I have never thought of before. I have began to eliminate sugar from my diet and I am amazed at where sugar is hidden in every day food that I never dreamed would have sugar. I have already began to notice a tremendous difference in my energy level and have lost a couple of pounds. I would highly recommend reading this book to anyone who is interested in bettering their physical and mental well being.

Fantastic Food with Splenda: 160 Great Recipes for Meals Low in Sugar, Carbohydrates, Fat, and Calories Review

Fantastic Food with Splenda: 160 Great Recipes for Meals Low in Sugar, Carbohydrates, Fat, and Calories

I came on line to order this amazing book for my friend on the South Beach Diet and was so suprised to see someone question it's accuracy because I am a Weight Watcher (points are in the book), and hate labels that lie! First of all in my copy, that I got a couple weeks back, the first recipe - Strawberry Lemonade- has the ingredients and I did not see a lot of typo's - so hers must have been a bad copy. I did find the 0 grams on the "compare" page - but it is clearly just an innocent mistake. The page highlights that Ms. Koch's Cinnamon Pancakes and Apple Butter Syrup have 11 grams of fat and then "compares" them to regular pancakes and syrup with 3 pats of butter. Since it clearly (in a box) says YOU SAVE: 9 grams of fat - along with 56 carbs, 195 calories and 7 points!!! by having hers instead of the "usual" pancakes and syrup you can see the fat grams on the high fat and sugar comparison should have been 20 (not 0). Yet, just to be sure I re-calculated several recipes with my own nutrition calculator, and they were all perfect - no errors - with accurate data and weight watcher points.
More important - this book not only has great food - Chai Tea, Pumpkin Muffins, a bunch of great Coleslaws, Spinach Salad (with hot bacon dressing), Sloppy Joes, ice creams and even Cheesecake for breakfast - every single recipe I have made has been easy and delicious. It is the first book I have found that does such a good job cutting the fat along with the sugar and carbs and that has good recipes for everyday use (and a bunch for the holidays). I am ordering another book, and her dessert book, as soon as I finish this review and recommend you do so too. You will not be disappointed.

Sugar-Free Toddlers: Over 100 Recipes Review

Sugar-Free Toddlers: Over 100 Recipes
Average Reviews:

I almost wasn't interested in this book because the title made me think that this book would have bland and boring recipes. But after flipping through it I saw lots of things that sounded good to try. And almost every recipe so far has been a huge hit with my 18 month old son. This is amazing to me because I thought he was picky. I guess I just wasn't giving him the kind of foods he likes. This book is, as other critics have noted, NOT sugar free. Fruit juice is a sugar. But I do not consider this a drawback because I think that people who don't eat any sugar of any kind are kidding themselves. The key is to use healthy forms of sugar and not too much. The main reason I was anxious to try these recipes is that nearly all of them use whole-wheat flour or some other whole grain flour and I am a big believer in using whole grains. So nutritious and full of fiber. Best recipes so far that I can highly recommend: Orange-date snack cake, Pilgrim pancakes, and Toddler date bread stix. The Coconut Pineapple cookies, however, were not very good. They were not even remotely sweet enough and were more like a pancake than a cookie. But I heated them up and buttered them and my son ate them for breakfast! So really, what it comes down to is that toddlers DO like these recipes. My son prefers them over the white flour, preservative laced stuff from the store. You can't protect your kids from sugar their whole lives, so give them a healthy alternative.

The Stevia Cookbook: Cooking with Nature's Calorie-Free Sweetener Review

The Stevia Cookbook: Cooking with Nature's Calorie-Free Sweetener
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I started using Stevia to reduce the amount of sugar and artificial sweeteners my family uses. It is fairly straight forward to replace sugar/Equal with Stevia in coffee, homemade salad dressings and sauces. But I was having lots of trouble with baked goods. So I THOUGHT one good cookbook could replace my expermenting. This book doesn't seem to be the one.
First problem: Not really over 100 recipes. Does anyone really need a recipe for sweetening your coffee, making hot cocoa or lemonade? How about a recipe for making whipped cream (whip cream and stevia until soft peaks form)?
Second problem: Not very many baked goods recipes: only 3 cake recipes, 2 muffin recipes, 9 cookie recipes. These are the types of recipes where subbing Stevia for sugar is very difficult and where even 2 or 3 GOOD recipes would be very useful for most cooks.
Third problem: Even these few recipes are not very good. For the time and effort involved in home cooking, what you make should be healthy and at least as good tasting as what you can buy at a grocery. I've tried 3 recipes from this book - the "best" result was the Chocolate Mini Muffins. When I read the recipe I thought it looked ALOT like a biscuit recipe. Well the result was a slightly sweet sort-of-choclate biscuit baked in a muffin tin NOT a muffin. It was OK I ate one, the kids toke a bite of one each and we threw out the other 20. I really expect a cookbook author or even anyone who even rarely bakes to know the difference between a biscuit and a muffin.
Don't waste your money on this book.

Stevia: Naturally Sweet Recipes for Desserts, Drinks and More Review

Stevia: Naturally Sweet Recipes for Desserts, Drinks and More
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After realizing my addiction to cakes, cookies, brownies, and basically anything baked with sugar I knew I had to find a better way to eat my sweets without the sugar that was killing my pancreas and about to cause me diabetes.
When I was originally looking for a Stevia cookbook I first searched for "Stevia Cookbook" on Amazon and got a list of the few that exist. I then went to my local library and put them all on hold so I could read them and decide which one I wanted to buy. Stevia by Rita DePuydt was the winner and has been my go to dessert book for about a year now.
Of all the Stevia cookbooks I chose this one because all the recipes are designed to be healthy and the ingredients have some healing properties. Other Stevia books simply replaced all or half of the evil refined sugar with stevia while leaving all the fat and refined flours in the recipe.
Not in DePuydt's book! None of her recipes have sugar and they are all easily adaptable for people who prefer to be vegan, gluten-free, or dairy free. She replaces fat with apple butter/applesauce and she uses arrowroot powder instead of cornstarch. You'll see ingredients not found in conventional dessert books like tofu, agar-agar, date sugar, carob powder, brown rice flour, and soy flour. She also lists added sweeteners such as maple syrup, honey and molasses as optional. This book also differs from others of its kind because in the beginning it gives you the history and health benefits of Stevia. It tells you how to grow it, buy it, store it, and use it. The back of the book tells you how to use Stevia in place of sugar in your other cookbooks, substitutions for common ingredients, and measurements. You'll get food preparation tips, a shopping list, and a list of sources as to where to buy Stevia.
Here are some tips you'll need to know about using this book:
Be aware there is a learning curve in this book. I found that in the beginning I had to learn how to cook without sugar and how to properly combine and use ingredients I had never heard of.
Everything I've made with Stevia tastes better the next day so don't worry if the batter has a weird aftertaste since it goes away after a day in the fridge.
Consume desserts within 2-3 days because after that you will start tasting the aftertaste of Stevia. If you cant eat it in 3 days freeze it to keep it fresh.
Don't see using new ingredients as a hassle see it as a learning experience. Its worth it to keep that killer sugar of your body and besides, I came to love the tastes of these so called new ingredients more than the conventional ones. I can never go back!
You can be proud of yourself for using this book. You just cut your calories in half, your carbs by at least 1/3, and added protein and fiber to your diet. Also the desserts are so light you don't feel sick after eating them.

Post grape-nuts Flakes Cereal, 14-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 4) Review

Post grape-nuts Flakes Cereal, 14-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 4)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Our family LOVES this cereal. I used to buy it regularly at the local Safeway. Unfortunately, as with the experience of many others, the local grocery store no longer carries it.
When buying it at Safeway, I could find it quite often "on sale" for $2 per box - and that box was larger than the paltry 14-ouncers Amazon is peddling here (can't recall, but I believe it was an 18 oz size)
A LITTLE ARITHMETIC:
1. If I was buying 18 oz for $2, the price was 11 cents an ounce (even if the boxes were 14 oz, the price still would have been 14.3 cents per oz).
2. Amazon is selling us 6 14 oz boxes (84 oz) for $25.14 (and telling us it is "discounted" from $28.89!). This amounts to 30 cents an ounce. You can get it down to 25.4 cents an ounce IF you agree to regular interval deliveries - something I'd be GLAD to do for the RIGHT PRICE!
NOTE: At 30 cents an ounce, we are paying $4.80 per pound - I can buy several punds of chicken, hamburger, or even a pretty good steak for that per-pound price.
CONCLUSION: this great product seems to have disappeared from the local store shelves and, in order to get it, we now have to pay 2 to 3 times as much making grape nut flakes more costly than many meats. I suspect that this is very profitable and I'd rather be a seller than a buyer!!
If anyone know of better pricing options, please post them!
Also, POST and AMAZON, if you are listening, PLEASE see if you couldn't provide this absolutely great product at a little better price. Many thanks for reading.
