The Sweet Potato Lover's Cookbook: More than 100 ways to enjoy one of the world's healthiest foods Review

The Sweet Potato Lover's Cookbook: More than 100 ways to enjoy one of the world's healthiest foods
Average Reviews:

These days, I think published cook books need better formatting and illustration in order to compete against the resources that are already available through an internet search. This nice little book on sweet potatoes would have benefited greatly from some color photographs - especially since it is basically a revised and updated edition of The Sweet Potato Cookbook. As it stands, the only color photos are on the front and back cover. If I were considering this book as a gift for someone - say for my diabetic father or anyone moving away from white potatoes for health reasons - I would be unhappy with this purchase. While it is full of recipes, it lacks visual appeal. There are a few drawn illustrations but they do little to educate or inspire, in my opinion.
The recipes range from super simple mashed sweet potatoes to exotic desserts like Lime Sweet Potato Chiffon Pie (boy, I sure would have loved to see what that looks like). There are small fact and history sections in the front that I found interesting. Such as putting cut sweet potatoes in salt water to keep them from browning. Recipes are divided up into the traditional categories: appetizers, beverages, soups, salads, breads, breakfasts, main dishes, side dishes, friendship recipes (recipes shared by friends)and some international selections in the Around the World chapter. There's a wide variety here to choose from and since I bought this for my own use, I am not unhappy with my purchase. It will benefit anyone who would like to learn more about cooking this super food - to include the traditional methods.
It should be noted that this is not a vegan, vegetarian or even a diabetic cook book. While some of the recipes certainly fall into those categories, others include items like milk, eggs, meat, bacon drippings, etc... Beyond including the sweet potato as an ingredient, the recipes have little else in common - no "theme" to offer those who have specific dietary requirements. The subtitle of the book is: "More than 100 ways to Enjoy One of the World's Healthiest Foods" - unfortunately, many of the recipes include decidedly unhealthy ingredients. While perhaps better for you than alternatives, Sweet Potato Doughnuts, for example, are still just deep fried dough. There's a little bit of everything in this collection.
A 3 star review doesn't mean this is a bad cook book. Amazon defines a 3 star review as "OK".

Flying Apron's Gluten-Free and Vegan Baking Book Review

Flying Apron's Gluten-Free and Vegan Baking Book
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love this book, and I plan on giving it as a gift to anyone interested in GF baking. This weekend I made the Pumpkin Glory Loaf with molasses and the whole house smelled absolutely divine for hours. I plan on making the cranberry apple tart with cornmeal and pine nut crust for Thanksgiving. I'll try to update this review from time to time with successes and failures, but so far this book and I are on a serious winning streak.
As context, I've been baking GF for about two years now. I have copies of Bette Hagman's two main baking books: The Gluten-free Gourmet Makes Dessert: More Than 200 Wheat-free Recipes for Cakes, Cookies, Pies and Other Sweets and The Gluten-Free Gourmet Bakes Bread: More Than 200 Wheat-Free Recipes and I adore those books as well. Bette uses a lot of eggs in her recipes. I don't fault her for that. Eggs make excellent binders and bring more protein to the equation. My family is not vegan, but sometimes I do worry about the constant stream of eggs we're pouring into our systems. I had periodically tried to make GF bread without eggs (using egg replacer mostly) and I failed every time.
Enter the Flying Apron Baking book and their ever-so-clever use of pumpkin, sweet potatoes, and yams as the missing ingredient. Magic! Without cholesterol! I'm ecstatic! (I hope I'm not giving too much away here. You should still buy the book! There's so much more to it than my own little revelation of how to get moisture and a little binder into egg-free breads.)
In short, I can't wait to try every single recipe in this book. Seriously. I'll probably substitute a bit here and there, but there's a wealth of tricks and techniques in this little book.
For those of you that are skeptical about GF baking or about vegan baking, I wish I could mail you all a baked good or two from the Flying Apron here in Seattle. They would make believers out of you!

Eat Well Live Well with Gluten Intolerance: Gluten-Free Recipes and Tips Review

Eat Well Live Well with Gluten Intolerance: Gluten-Free Recipes and Tips
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Do you need a recipe for pancakes that is the standard gluten pancake recipe with gluten free flour substituted in? Then this might be the book for you. This could have been a good book for people with little to no cooking knowledge, but there are editing errors that would confuse that audience, for instance, the sudden appearance of caster sugar in recipe instructions with there is no mention of caster sugar in the ingredient list. (What? You don't know what caster sugar is? That's because there no such thing in the US. Someone edited the ingredient list for the US, but not the recipe body.)
To its credit, the recipes presented in this book much healthier than many of the recipes you'd find in old gluten free cookbooks. And if you are recently diagnosed, the table of contents might give you some ideas on what you could eat.
Also, just in case you are avoiding dairy too, you should know that about half of the recipes contain dairy.

The Complete Passover Cookbook Review

The Complete Passover Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book could be subtitled "The Joy of Passover Cooking" because it does for Passover what the "Joy of Cooking" did for food in general. An incredible variety of recipes, suitable for both gebrochts and non-gebrochts (in 10 years I haven't yet tried them all), with conversion tables and recommendations for substitutions if you live, as I do, in a place where the choice of kosher-for-passover ingredients is limited. My family tells me that each Passover gets more scrumptious than the last, and my husband, who always regarded Pesach as something of a trial because of the restrictions, now eagerly anticipates the Pesach rolls and other delicacies I whip up. No Passover-observing kitchen should be without this book!

In nineteen chapters spiced with history, laced with lore, and garnished with cooking suggestions, you will find everything from traditional holiday preparations (try the Russian borscht and light-as-a-feather knaidlach) to modern-day originals (matzo-spinach pie, elegant stuffed drumsticks, matzo meal polenta--to name a few). The Complete Passover Cookbook will help you prepare the kind of Passover you never dreamed possible. New, revised 2008 edition.

Leave it to the very creative Anne Byrn to be right on top of food trends with her latest cookbook entry - The Cake Mix Doctor Bakes Gluten-Free. We love the layout of this book which is easy to read, contains a helpful recipe reminder panel on some recipe pages where you can jot down your own notes, and offers just plain old good advice, like how to prevent a bundt cake from sticking to the pan! Be sure to read the "Cake Mix Doctor Says" tips listed at the bottom of most recipes.
Byrn proves that just because a dessert recipe is gluten-free doesn't mean it has to be dull. Among her more than 50 recipes is an Almond Cream Cheese Pound Cake, Caramel Melted Ice Cream Cake, German Chocolate Cake, Coconut Cake with Fluffy Marshmallow Frosting and even a Gluten-free Wedding Cake! Recipes cover layer cakes, bundts, sheet cakes and bars, brownies, cookies and cupcakes, too. Just browsing through this book has us ready to get out our mixing bowl and bundt pan.

The Gluten-Free Cookbook for Kids: 101 Exciting and Delicious Recipes Review

The Gluten-Free Cookbook for Kids: 101 Exciting and Delicious Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is such a great little book. Easy to make recipies that really are tasty and perfect for kids......just like the title says.
I own a lot of gluten free receipe books and usually can pick one or two ideas from each to tempt my son with but the majority of those other cook-books (as good as some of them may be) focus on adults with gluten intolerance and consist of meals and dishes that wouldn't look out of place at a dinner party catering for guests with a discerning palate. This little gem though, well and truly caters for children and covers everything from snacks and nibbles through to parties and complete meals. It also has some nice little tales/snippets that go with some of the recipies, to let you know how they came about, which is interesting.
The BEST thing about this book however, is that although it's brilliant for the gluten intolerant in your family it also works as a general child friendly cookbook that everyone can benefit from, even those in the family that can tolerate gluten will find little to object to with these dishes. It's impossible to tell that the finished recipies cater to a dietary requirement, it all just tastes and looks like good home-made food. The recipies are healthy, tasty, fun, easy AND gluten free. It's brilliant.
Even if you're just looking for a great cookbook for kids menu's I'd recommend this one, it's filled with yummy stuff.

Gluten-Free: More Than 100 Delicious Recipes Your Family Will Love
Average Reviews:

This is an attractive cookbook and every recipe I have tried has been delicious and easy to follow. The dishes tend to be elegant and great for entertaining, but not too difficult for everyday family meals. However, I have noted a couple ingredients that are not gluten-free, such as blue cheese and beer. Overall, I highly recommend this cookbook, but do not rely on all ingredients listed to be gluten-free.

Grandma's Guide To Gluten Free Cooking: Gluten Free, Wheat Free, Dairy Free, Egg Free, Peanut Free Review

Grandma's Guide To Gluten Free Cooking: Gluten Free, Wheat Free, Dairy Free, Egg Free, Peanut Free
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book after my son was found to be sensitive to wheat, dairy, egg and peanuts. I thought it would be perfect for us. But it turns out that it's just another cookbook sitting on my shelf unused.
For a beginner cook this book would probably be a huge blessing, but it didn't do much for me.
For one thing, I like to bake. And I mean REALLY bake - not just pour oil and eggs on top of a box cake mix. I was disappointed that all but one of the dessert recipes started with a box mix (gluten-free, of course). I was looking for recipes that would help me make things from scratch and not have to pay big bucks for the box mixes.
The recipes I tried did turn out good, but they are definitely NOT economical. (Not that this book claims that the recipes are cost-effective, but I know it's something most people are concerned with.) I have since found that I CAN bake economically AND meet my son's restricted diet when I make my own baking mixes and make things from scratch.
The meal recipes are okay, but nothing that I don't make normally in the kitchen with few to no modifications: chili, jambalaya, spaghetti sauce, etc.
My advice to anyone looking for a gf/cf egg-free cookbook is to find a good recipe for baking mix (usually rice flour, tapioca flour, potato starch & xantham gum), use flax seeds/water for your egg (or just a smashed banana if you're making something sweet!) and just tinker with your regular recipe until you get it right. It's really easier than you may think. I was overwhelmed (almost to the point of tears) when my son was first diagnosed, but I have come to find that it's really not that difficult to bake for him. Oh, and did I mention Teff flour?! It is expensive, but if you want a special treat, Teff cashew cookies are wonderful.
So, to sum it all up....this book would probably be good for a beginner cook or someone who usually doesn't cook but has now found they have to due to their or their family member's diet restrictions. But if you are an advanced cook this book will probably just collect dust on your shelf.

My story begins about 4 years ago when my grandson, Brandon, was restricted to a diet free of gluten, wheat, eggs, dairy, and peanuts. I was totally bewildered. How could I possibly cook properly for him and his family? I only remember once that I wept in my kitchen pantry out of frustration, but many times I felt that inadequate. Brandon's mom gave me a couple of recipes, which I prepared on every visit. I also had a house rule that no one was allowed to eat forbidden foods in his presence. I felt that I was doing all that I could until one innocent remark changed my life. We were in a grocery store and Brandon took my hand, led me to a display, and said longingly, "Look, Nana, those are called muffins". It brought tears to my eyes, and I vowed to myself that I would learn to cook delicious foods - gluten, wheat, dairy, egg, and peanut free. It has been a journey of trial and error. I cannot tell you that I have successes every time, but imagination and persistence has paid off. I have felt led to write this book, and it is my wish that it will help your family as much as it has helped mine. Barbara Wells

I was pleased to see at least two other people mentioned this, but thought I'd throw in my two cents.
With a non-allergic 4 year old and a 2 year old allergic to wheat, dairy, eggs, fish and nuts, I was hoping to find some recipes that would please both kids. Almost all the recipes have dairy or eggs in them. The dairy-free and egg-free options are just to omit them. Great! Pick up any cookbook for that.
I made one recipe from this book and it was awful. (A cake recipe that I had to use 3 substitutions for). There are much better cake recipes out there.
This book is on its way to the used bookstore . . .

Millions of children across the country have food sensitivities or allergies, and the number is on the rise. And most of these children don't get to eat cookies, for fear of the reaction they might have from the wheat, or the peanuts. Imagine the feeling a young child must have as they stand there watching their friends munch on cookies just out of Mom's oven, while they have to make do with yet another carrot stick.
Leslie Hammond knows that left-out feeling all too well. As a child she suffered from severe food allergies and would watch year after year as, when the birthday song had ended and she'd blown out the candles, her fancy party cake was whisked away and served to her friends, while she ate a dry rice cake. Now the mother of allergic children herself, Leslie vowed to spare her own children that trauma. She had developed over 100 recipes that will appeal to a kid's tastes. Unlike other food-allergy cookbooks already on the market, her recipes hardly ever call for the kinds of ingredients that would gross out any kid -- like tofu.

The book's recipes take into account all of the most common food sensitivities like wheat and gluten, peanuts, or dairy. Each recipe can be modified to fit the dietary needs to the child.

It's divided into three sections -- snacks, main dishes, and treats. Leslie and co-author Lynne Rominger also provide information about how to find what you need in a regular grocery store, instead of requiring a separate trip to the natural foods store. She writes from the perspective of an ordinary working mom, and doesn't design eating regimes that would take all day in the kitchen to satisfy.

With the recipes in this book, even the most sensitive child will get a cookie too.

Flax the Super Food: Over 80 Delicious Recipes Using Flax Oil and Ground Flaxseed Review

Flax the Super Food: Over 80 Delicious Recipes Using Flax Oil and Ground Flaxseed
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Flax - the Super Food - Book Review The Introduction, provides a helpful background on flax that's easy to understand. The author speaks from his experience, having developed, marketed, and distributed flax products for the health food market as well as studied flax farming and pressing techniques. Covered is the history of flax, from before Christ, to the present, including where flax is raised today. The author gives illustrations of how flax has helped both animals and humans. Flax can be a food and a medicine, both on the inside (in food and as a laxative) as well as on the outside (as poultices for healing wounds and healthy skin). There is a good explanation of the fiber, mucilage, lignans, and oil in flax and their health benefits. There are helpful consumer tips on how to purchase, use, and store flax oil and flax (both the brown and the newer gold varieties of flax.) The author stresses how to buy flax oil in small quantities, in dark containers, and "cold-expeller-pressed" as heating and refining changes the flax oil into unhealthy trans fats. The recipe section, written by two cookbook authors, features a variety of healthy, vegetarian recipes that include not only flax but also soy foods such as tofu and soy milk. Each recipe has a helpful nutritional analysis. To eliminate confusion ,it might help to explain whether a recipe calling for "ground flaxseeds" means to measure the flax before or after grinding. Some other helpful additions to the book might be: o A mini conversion chart of how much whole flax seed equals how much ground flax o A nutritional analysis of flax and flax oil, such as found on a food label, that would include the calories, fat, fiber, protein content, etc o A few more documented human research studies from places such as NCI (National Cancer Institute) to further substantiate the many health benefits of flax. o A bit more discussion by a nutritionist discussing omega 3 and omega 6 fats, including possibly a chart showing the fat composition of flax and flax oil by the percentage of each type of fat. o A list of flax resources (books, web sites) and places to get flax in the US and Canada - such as the Flax Council of Canada.

I was disappointed when I got this book. It has a good portion of the recipes from their 1st book just "converted" to "gluten free" by substituting "gluten free pasta" etc. I guess that is common sense. Had I known that, I wouldn't have bothered. I bought this book because I have a friend, who is gluten intolerant and I try and accommodate her allergies when she comes over. ( Not because my family or I, actually need it.)So take this review with a grain of salt.I don't fit the demographic that needs this book. For the record, I really love their 1st book. In the author's lasted installment of books and cookbooks to rescue the many folks out there who suffer from food related illnesses, (allergies, sensitivities, intolerances or malabsorptions)this one is a tresure trove of valuable information, tips, tricks and suggestions. For many years I have been recovering from food sensitivities that have contributed to migraine headaches, muscle and joint pain, and hormone imbalance.
I have searched for one book that could rescue me and the patients I see in an Environmental Medicine practice. Patients have asked me so many times I can't count, "Is there a book I can buy that will help me understand all this"? Here is the answer we have all been looking for!!
Including tips on money saving shopping, internet resources, and just her own ingenuity, Ms. Dumke leads the pack in cutting edge information. This book is great for the "seasoned cook" like myself who has thrown out a few meals in her day because they just didn't taste good. Or the novice who doesn't really love to cook but have found themselves in the position of having to change their diet and lifestyle in order to regain their health. I have already recommended this book and will continue to do so.
I will also use it as a helpful tool in my own kitchen. Ms. Dumkes' personal experience in the complicated area of food allergy makes this book REAL!!!

Living Gluten and Dairy-Free with French Gourmet Food: A Practical Guide Review

Living Gluten and Dairy-Free with French Gourmet Food: A Practical Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Living Gluten and Dairy-Free French Gourmet Food" is the second cookbook by Austin Chef Alain Braux. Alain has impressive credentials as a traditionally trained French chef but, even more interesting, is a nutritherapist - a term used in Europe for nutritionists who use only food as a healing medium, as opposed to conventional nutritionists, who usually work with supplements, homeopathy and herbal medicine.
Since writing his first book, "How to Lower your Cholesterol with French Gourmet Food", Alain recently discovered that he was gluten intolerant and has gone on to compile his knowledge into a new book for those of us who love good food, more especially traditional French food.
Alain's comment `gluten-free junk food is still junk food' is such an astute observation. He believes we should eat thoughtfully, be aware, and indulge carefully on special occasions.
Features found in this book aside from the wonderful recipes:
1) Narratives from people about their journey of GFCF discovery - one of these stories might be your `aha!' trigger
2) Sympathy for the many reasons you may be attempting to self medicate and suggestions on how to find the right doctor
3) Why keeping a food journal is so very important (there may be additional sensitivities)
4) Setting yourself up for gluten-free and casein-free success
5) A comprehensive list of resources for Celiac Disease and Autism including books, magazines, organizations, and online support
6) Those mysterious food additives that could indicate `hidden' gluten - pages of them
7) `Safe' and `not safe'; in medication, vitamins, toiletries, household cleaners

The Complete Guide to Wheat-Free Cooking Review

The Complete Guide to Wheat-Free Cooking

This is one of the few books that I have found for individuals with just wheat-not wheat and gluten-allergies. I suffer from wheat allergies, and it has been difficult to find recipes that don't exclued gluten as well(which makes it more difficult to find ingredients). This book is great. The only reason that I gave it 4 stars instead of five, is that I wish it had more spelt recipes!
