I'm a book hoarder, especially cookbooks and recipe books. I'll admit, although I probably have over 300 books (yes, that's a low guesstimate) I don't always read or use the books I collect. Five years ago, I walked into Dr. Shapiro's office with over 40 lbs. to lose and was literally at the end of my dieting rope. I had subjected myself to every diet from Optifast to Jenny Craig to Dr. Atkins to Richard Simmon's deal-a-meal and was successful at losing weight, but as soon as the diet was over, all the weight came back.... and then some.
From the moment I walked into Dr. Shapiro's office, all the dieting rules that had been drilled into my head were thrown out the window. He and his team of nutritionists taught me that I was actually setting myself up for failure with diets that were based on deprivation and control. I learned that I was actually sabotaging myself with some of the dieting techniques I had been taught over the years. Almost every dieting counselor/coach/sadist that I went to forbid me to eat fat, sugar, and salt, so I was trained to eat only low-fat, low-sugar, low-salt (and low-taste) "diet" foods. Every morning, I choked down a waxy, low-fat muffin or a plain bagel, sometimes making it more palatable with a smidgeon of low-fat cream cheese because I thought I was being good. In my mind, I was a model dieter.... but yet, I GAINED weight. How could this be! And the frustration just led to more eating.
The first and most poignant lesson I learned from Dr. Shapiro was that a bagel has the same calorie content as the three-egg deli breakfast I avoided like the plague. No wonder I wasn't losing weight!This book is full of simple strategies like this that help you to understand what you are eating and enable you to make better choices. There's no starvation, no weird or embarrassing dieting tactics and no suffering involved. Throughout the entire time I was losing weight, I ate most of my meals at restaurants, traveled extensively, and never felt like I was on a "diet". It took me a year to lose those 40 lbs and I've kept the weight off for four years. My Dad started seeing Dr. Shapiro 6 months ago and has lost 35 lbs. I am thankful to Dr. Shapiro and his staff for literally changing my life. Read this book and follow Dr. Shapiro's advice and it can work for you too!

As many people know, losing weight is often times easier than keeping it off. Atkins addresses this issue in his latest book, "Atkins For Life".
The book "Atkins for Life" is an excellent resource book. It is filled with practical advice and tips on how to make your low carbohydrate weight loss a permanent success.
Over the years Atkins name has been maligned and sneered at as he pioneered the idea that its not the fat in our diet that makes us fat its the excessive amounts of carbohydrates we have been consuming. The low fat diet was presented to Americans as the best way and the healthiest way to lose weight. However, recent research has revealed the low fat diet to be a miserable failure. As the fat has been taken out of the diet carbohydrates have been added in their place and many Americans have become obese and unhealthy. Dr. Atkin's proposal that eating less carbs can lead to weight loss and better health has been vindicated.
The Atkins weight loss method is a 4 step approach. Phase 1 INDUCTION is where you limit your carbs to 20 grams per day to jump start your weight loss program. Phase 2 OWL or ONGOING WEIGHT LOSS allows you to slowly add back carbs until you discover the amount of carbs you can eat and still lose weight.
Phase 3 PRE-MAINTENANCE has you slow your weight loss by adding in more carbs so good eating habits become ingrained. And in Phase 4 LIFETIME MAINTENANCE you learn to enjoy a wider variety of foods and maintain your weight loss. This book "Atkins for Life" discusses each of the phases but is mainly concerned with Phase 4 LIFETIME MAINTENANCE.
You can learn what to do to lose weight with this book, but for in depth information, you would be better off selecting "Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution".
This book covers in great detail how to maintain the weight you have lost. Part One: A Lifetime Plan recaps the Atkins program. It includes information on the diet, the effect on your body, putting it into practice and how to benefit from exercise. Part Two: Eating for Life teaches you how to get your kitchen in order, and gives thirty meal plans with carb counts. It includes twenty meal plans for special occasions. 125 recipes for success are also given.
YES you can eat carbohydrates. You can have bread, cake and pizza or even wine. The key of course is knowing how many carbohydrates your body can handle each day without gaining weight. And using techniques to get the most bang from your carbohydrate buck. These techniques are taught in the book. For example if you crave bread Atkins has several pages of information to help you make the best selection. Breads are ranked on their ability to effect your insulin levels. There are also tips on how to enjoy bread without overdoing it such as eating the crust only. Atkins shares techniques like this for a variety of foods.
Comfort foods are a big issue for many. Atkins tells you what to choose or what to substitute. Eating out is another area covered. Best choices at different restaurants is given in detail. Atkins also includes mental tips to help you avoid backsliding.
Key to the book is the detailed menu plans given for 4 ranges of carb levels at 45g, 60g, 80g and 100g . Just adjust up or down so you are at your level (which you learn from his diet). Meal plans are simple and include snacks. A sample day for a 60 g plan would include 1 slice lemon zucchini bread, with an egg and ricotta cheese for breakfast. Meat loaf with whole-grain bread and salad for lunch.
Jerk shrimp with pasta or collard greens for dinner and 1/2 cup of cantaloupe for a snack. Carb counts are given so you can substitute as desired.
Crab Deviled Eggs, Cherry Muffins, Mixed Berry Shortcakes, Pinwheel Cookies, Roasted Chicken and Feta Cheese Wrap, Chocolate Souffle and Southwestern Style Pork Fajitas are among the 125 recipes. Recipes include nutritional information, but are not pictured.
The 370 page book also includes self tests and quizzes to help you stay on task. My favorite part of "Atkins For Life" has to be the success stories. There are a number of remarkable stories in the book with black and white photos included! Very inspiring!
The book "Atkins For Life" makes living a low carb life in our high carb world easier and enjoyable! I highly recommend it!

In 1995 I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. I had a MRI done of my brain and there were lesions present, and many neurological symptoms. I saw double, had light sensitivity, had problems with walking and my balance. I began studying this book and immediately went on the Swank Diet. My saturated fat intake went under 15 grams a day (he allows 20 max) and no more than 5 grams of fat at a serving. I used his tables to compute the fat - this meant that an egg counted for 5 grams, and no red meat or milkfat for the first year of the diet. Immediately I felt much better. Now, my neurologist is amazed at my condition. My neurological symptoms are pretty much normal. I take no other medicine for the MS, and I feel great. I recomend the book and the cookbook which is included. Ask your MD and follow his advice- but I don't think this diet could hurt anyone unless they were way underweight. The diet allows up to 60 grams of liquid oil each day which makes it easier to handle (ie- olive oil, hazelnut, etc,) and it seems really healthful. The oil makes it much easier to stay on the diet.) I feel great! The few times I have gone off the diet (even inadvertantly) I have felt worse quickly- even if I go off the diet even a little- so I stay on it religiously.

Please, before you judge or listen to the negative reviews let me say something. I started working this plan when very little information was available about it May of 2009. I did it when there was no book and only limited information available via the internet. Basically I took the 15 sugar 6 carb idea from Jorge and ran with it. So far I have lost 60 lbs on the Belly Fat Cure and I plan to lose 30 more to reach my goal. Those people writing negative reviews just want to open a book and have the weight fall off their bodies. You have to take control and want this for yourself. Read the book for insight and understanding and not just to be led around like a puppet.
Second, I live in a rural area with no Whole Foods Market or anything around and have to travel far for a health food store or order online to get some of the items that are in book. But not all of them. Jorge just gives the healthiest options, but you can make substitutions. If something is not available in your area, use something else. Most of us don't know that these healthier products exist. We let the mainstream dictate what we are putting in our bodies and feeding to our children. What we should be doing instead of attacking Jorge is to demand that these healthier options be made more readily available to us in our local markets. A lot of what he proposes include no artificial sweetners because of their alleged negative affects. If this isn't a concern of yours then make a substitution that includes artificial sweetners. I'm sure Jorge wouldn't advocate this but I have to admit that I do use some of the products that are on his Belly Bad List. I make the food and the plan work for me. For instance, Jorge doesn't like sugar free puddings that you can buy on the shelf because of the artificial sweetners. I try to avoid the artificial sweetners as much as I can but if I want a chocolate pudding then I'll have one. No biggie. Personal choice, hello?
I do not have a ton of money and was actually unemployed when I started this way of eating last summer. Yes, I think of it as a way of eating - not a diet. This is how I live now. So to those who claim its expensive that's not true. It doesn't have to be. The recipes in the book are simple and great tasting. They include normal foods that you probably already eat now. Its just about making it in a healthier way and making better choices. Things you would never think you could eat while losing weight. You do not feel deprived at all. It really is a mindset change more than anything.
I'm shocked and amazed at the people who complain about it being full of recipes, menu plans, and product evaluations?? Really this has me baffled. Isn't that what we all need anyway - the meat and potatoes of the thing? While Jorge explains an overview of the science behind why the plan works, do you really want a book full of technical jargon and trials and studies? If you google Jorge Cruise or take a look at some of his Youtube videos....he has interviews on there with experts that explain more indepth about the dangers of sugar. This is serious business, folks. Check them out.
I really hope that people will try this way of eating and don't judge the book based on the negative reviews. Its a shame because I know that I rely heavily on amazon reviews for nearly everything but this is one instance where I can truly say the negative reviewers have it all wrong.
Thank you, Jorge, for your passion for health and bringing awareness to this nation. The book and your wisdom have been a blessing to me and my family.

Warming this up in the microwave and eating with your morning coffee feels like you are sitting in a bakery. The banana nut smell doesn't disappoint. There is no fiber "cardboard" taste to it like a lot of other high fiber breakfast items have. No aftertaste. I was initially disappointed by the small size, but it is dense and as filling as an air filled bakery muffin. And the nuts stay cruncy, giving a nice texture. Yum!

Honestly, I'm not exaggerating! I recently lost a lot of weight and I use these muffin tops for dessert now. I make whoopie pies by cutting one in half and mixing fat free whipped topping with strawberry yogurt. Another recipe I like is using fat free whipped topping with a teaspoon of peanut butter mixed together. I got these recipes from the cookbook Hungry Girl's 200 Hundred under 200! My kids love these whoopie pies too!
