Trouble in Pembrook (Dog Watch) Review

Trouble in Pembrook (Dog Watch)

This book was read by our 9 year old son who loved it! It is a story about dogs forming a group to catch a vandal while finding their alpha dog (leader), Tundra, who has been missing for a couple of days. It is an easy read, discusses minor consequences, and has encouraged him to continue with this series.

Eggs Over Evie is a fun, uplifting story about relationships, cooking, and being 13 years old. You'll love Evie. She handles the fact that she has a new stepmother and will be having a new step-sibling with both courage and doubt. She's a real girl with real feelings...and a love of cooking. You'll enjoy the recipes and cooking tips at the end of each chapter, as well as the humor and likable characters. The writing is spot-on for readers 9-12--and for anyone who enjoys middle grade novels.

The Red Pyramid (The Kane Chronicles, Book 1) Review

The Red Pyramid (The Kane Chronicles, Book 1)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Going into this book I had very high expectations. After all, the Percy Jackson books are such a wonderful and unique offering in children's literature. They are funny, witty, filled with action and adventure, they breathe life into some of my favorite myths... They are hard to top. Pretty much this book is what would happen if the 39 Clues series and Percy Jackson books had a baby. There is alot more information being tossed out in this book than in Percy Jackson, but much more fun and mythology than the 39 Clues.
In this first of the Kane Chronicles, Riordan again does a great job of combining humor with action and adventure. This book as a lot to explain in terms of the mythology it is based on, I think most readers on average know less about Egyptian mythology than Greek. However, Riordan again explains it in a way that brings it to life. And once all of the ground work is laid in terms of what is going on in the story everything zooms along at a really fun pace.
Carter and Sadie Kane were raised separately after the sudden and tragic death of their mother. Carter has spent the last half dozen years traveling the world with his father, a noted Egyptologist. Living out of a suitcase and never staying in one place for long, Carter is quiet and a little socially awkward. Sadie on the other hand was raised in London by her grandparents. Even though she's the younger of the two she has a much more forceful personality than her brother. She is loud, wears combat boots and streaks her hair with crazy colors. Carter and his father only are allowed to see Sadie twice a year.
Carter and Sadie barely know each other when the actions of their father leave them on a crazy adventure with only a cat, named Muffin, to help them out. Not only is the crazy chaos god, Set, after them also an ancient group of wizards is tailing them across the world.
Riordan again does a great job of pulling ancient mythology into the modern world. He really grounds his story and makes it believable. By the end of the book you really know the characters and are ready for their next adventure.
Another fun thing about this book is that instead of having one narrator he allows Sadie and Carter to alternate every few chapters. Their voices are very different and how they see things is very interesting. It also sets up a lot of the humor.
In spite of its size (its around 41 Chapters long) I think anyone who enjoyed the Percy Jackson books will find themselves loving this book as well.
I'm only giving it 4 stars because it took me until maybe chapter 15 to really get into the book, there was so much information that it slowed down the narrative for me.

A House Called Awful End: Book One in the Eddie Dickens Trilogy Review

A House Called Awful End: Book One in the Eddie Dickens Trilogy

My dyslexic son bought this book and the sequel while we were in
Oxford, England and we absolutely loved them. We could readily picture all of the characters and the things they were involved in. My son was 11 at the time and loved having it read to him every night. We have just purchased our first Lemony Snicket book as we grew tired of waiting for the final book in this trilogy. Perhaps we found it so entertaining as I am an upper elementary teacher and his father a middle school teacher and we know these characters on a personal level. It is well worth exploring. I have also read it to my students and they beg for more.

The Tales of Tanglewood: The Lon Dubh Whistle Review

The Tales of Tanglewood: The Lon Dubh Whistle
Average Reviews:

Within the first few lines of this book, the narrator teases you a bit with this magical world that he has abandoned in pursuit for the technological world. However, in his old age, he decides to go to the magical woods again. This magical woods, called Tanglewood, was in need of his help. For this older man was a writer from the heart. This is just what Tanglewood needed - someone to pen the stories of its past. The stories start off with a boy named Colin. Colin finds himself lured into Tanglewood and soon discovers that he has fey, fairy, blood within him. He shortly finds himself in trouble with some pixies and must embark on a journey for his freedom.
This story is beautifully written. The story is interesting and unique. Truly a great read. The book is also beautifully formatted. It would not surprise me if this book became a cherished tale like that of Eragon. My favorite line of the book says that if you cannot find magic in the world, you must find magic in yourself. So, whatever you do today, go find that magic within you.

If You Give a Cat a Cupcake (If You Give... Books) Review

If You Give a Cat a Cupcake (If You Give... Books)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We love the "If You Give..." books at our house. Our 2 1/2 year old will sit through "Mouse Cookies & More" which has "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie", "If You Give a Pig a Pancake", "If You Give a Moose a Muffin" & "If You Take a Mouse to School" all in one, and then she'll want to read it all over again.
We were very excited to get a new "If You Give..." book, especially one about a cat (our daughter's favorite animal); but I found this story to be less charming than the others. Some of the transitions felt forced; for example, Cat goes to the gym and then suddenly wants to go to the park - I didn't get the connection so the book just didn't flow as well as the others I've read.
This is not to say my little girl isn't completely captivated by the book. We've had it less than a day and have read it through several times (we had to stop because of dinner and bedtime or we'd probably still be reading it!).
So, overall the story is cute and sweet, just like the others, but "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" is still my favorite.

Candy Wars: The Tooth Fairies vs The Candy King Review

Candy Wars: The Tooth Fairies vs The Candy King
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's been many years since I've read a kids book from start to finish. I'd purchased "Candy Wars" to read with my 7 year-old granddaughter. Her first visit we took turns reading. She managed her part without much help from this old geezer. By the time of her next visit she was on her own, I'd finished without her.
At its heart this is the story of a fantasy land where tooth fairies live when not slipping a few bucks under your pillow. Yes, fairies, it's too much work for just one. When little brother James disappears his sister Emily manages to follow him into the land of the tooth fairies. The fantasy land R.G. Cordiner has created will spark a kid's imagination while Emily and James encounter a castle made of teeth, chocolate-arrow-shooting snowmen, a toothless dragon, and more. Buried inside the adventure are a few lessons they might not realize they've learned about the evils of war and importance of family.

I just got this book. It was great. I read it to my 6 year old sister. And she loved it. You should get it for your child if your looking for a good childrens book. It teaches children to obey their parents and other brother and sisters that are older. And what might happen if they disobey. Your children will learn something from this book. The muffin people are cute!! And the illustrations are very colorful. That alone will attract children!
