Thanks to Rebecca Lang's Southern Entertaining for a New Generation, you no longer have to be raised in the South to entertain your guests with the hospitality of a Southerner. Designed for her own generation's needs, this creative book on entertaining is packed with tips and hints for easier cooking, and timelines to simplify the process of entertaining. In short, it's about how to host parties with less stress while serving food as good as grandmother used to make. Unlike most books on entertaining, the chapters are organized by the time of day in which a party is scheduled. The recipes are easy enough for the novice cook, and timelines are included to make sure that all of the food will be ready at the appropriate time. Each step is listed by the exact time of day at which it should be done, even when to run the dishwasher. The chapters all contain three or four party themes, each with recipes, serving piece suggestions, detailed timelines, and grocery lists. Some recipes even list lighter ingredients that can be substituted for high-fat ones without compromising taste. Each menu also includes wine suggestions to lessen the stress of choosing wine, even suggesting which glass to use and what to do if the host doesnt have enough wine glasses. Because so many young adults lead busy lives, the menus also include shortcuts in case there isn't enough time to make the entire menu from scratch. One of the most helpful features of Rebecca Langs Southern Entertaining for a New Generation is that the book provides serving suggestions for younger cooks who don't yet own all the serving pieces they need. "There is no reason not to host a party because you dont have enough china," she insists. "You can still have a great time by using some of the fun, creative suggestions in this book."

Larissa's Breadbook Baking Bread And Telling Tales With Women Of The American South Review

Larissa's Breadbook Baking Bread And Telling Tales With Women Of The American South
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love this book! It explores and celebrates the rich cultural diversity of the south, through the eyes of a young girl and ten aging women who share their memories...and their recipes. (There are twelve different versions of cornbread...yum!) As the author writes, "...the South was never only black and white, but was always a rich rainbow of ethnic groups..." So you'll find represented here African-American, North European, Italian, Mexican, Cajun, Appalachian, Cherokee and Jewish traditions.

Do you ever wonder what makes the South one of the most incredible places on Earth? As Larissa discovers, it's the awe-inspiring women. In this engaging story, ten remarkable women from rich and varied cultures share their words, their wit, their wisdom, and their lives.

The language of these women "is colorful and nuanced and often poetic, and the folks whose lives the storyteller enters and exits are complicated and comic, and at the same time often tragic. This community, woven together by the storyteller's enchantments...is moving and memorable." Lois Parkinson Zamora, professor at University of Houston, made those comments about the stories in Just Plain Folks, Lorraine Johnson-Coleman's earlier work. But they could just as easily have been written about the characters in Larissa's BreadBook.

Heart of the Home: A Vegetarian Cookbook for People Who Want to Make a Change But Don't Know Where to Start. Review

Heart of the Home: A Vegetarian Cookbook for People Who Want to Make a Change But Don't Know Where to Start.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"The moon was in Scorpio, and I was three sheets to the wind_" Thus begins the recipe for "Enchilada Sauce," just across the page from "White Woman's Bar-Be-Que Sauce."
Both irreverent and down-to-earth; open at any page and you'll know "Heart of the Home" isn't like any cookbook you've seen before. This is vegetarian cooking, down-home country style, and this is literature.
"If you have Cancer in your astrological chart, you will love making gravy, stir to your heart's content." Reassuring those who haven't ever picked up a pot before, nudging old hands to take chances they've never taken, this is a book for anyone wanting to connect or reconnect with the essential experience of cooking for others. Beyond that, it's a walk into one woman's extraordinary collection of warm moments and memories of special encounters, mostly in the kitchen.
Meet my old friend Ann Jackson. Truly a unique and original talent, when I first knew her she was the cook for a warehouse full of vegetarian men and women running one of the biggest natural foods operations in the West. I was the produce manager. Every morning Ann would come around the corner of that big walk-in cooler looking to see what was fresh and good and it was like the start of another day's adventure.
There's a whole cast of characters here, and every recipe is delivered with definite personality. Patsy, Senter, Dorita, Lindsey, Licorice, Tommy Merritt and a roving cast of truckers, girlfriends, pets, produce dealers and crazy Italians wander the range of food and adventure, covering the ground from "Prem Nagar Pea Soup" & "Solidarity Borscht" to "Milwaukee Street Squash" & "Nostromo Noodles." One of my favorites is "Mama's Dark Secret," and if Ann didn't invent "Chicken Fried Tofu," she sure perfected the form toward true immortality.
"What good is it how healthy something is if it doesn't taste good?" Healthy and good food that doesn't weigh you down and doesn't bore you either. I remember Ann used to call it "meat and potatoes vegetarian cooking." This is cooking for an American palette, without the usual American reliance on cheese and meat and processed additives. One of the author's goals is to encourage us to escape our dependence on cow, but she is never dogmatic, and most of the recipes can go either way. "_If you don't want to use soy milk, fine, use milk, use cream for all I care (they're your thighs), just get in there and do it!" Her other objective is to introduce us to a whole range of possibilities for vegetarian staples like tofu, tempeh, miso, seaweeds, grains, rice and noodles, while proving that we don't have to leave behind such traditional fare as Potato Salad (the best I've tasted), Corn Fritters, Chocolate Cream Pie, Hushpuppies and Baked Beans.
Ann and her husband own and manage 'Time After Time,' a very successful 2nd hand clothes store in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. They live amidst a fantastic collection of folk art and memorabilia (from which the 50s illustrations that adorn "Heart of the Home" are taken). The kitchen is clearly near the heart of their home, and with this cookbook we're all invited to sit around the kitchen table to share a few good stories and a lot of good eating.

Mrs. Whaley Entertains: Advice, Opinions, and 100 Recipes from a Charleston Kitchen Review

Mrs. Whaley Entertains: Advice, Opinions, and 100 Recipes from a Charleston Kitchen
Average Reviews:

I enjoyed "visiting with" Mrs. Whaley again, although perhaps not as much as in her gardening book. When reading, you feel as if you are sitting in front of her, engaged in listening to stories about Charleston, her past, and her family, and about making guests feel at home. I don't think the recipes will take the world by storm--most are variations on old favorites. But you pick up tidbits about entertaining and the relaxed southern style. This book and/or her gardening book would make wonderful gifts, and would be perfect to tuck into a gift basket along with some other items. It is the kind of book you want to pick up when you've had a hard day or have a rainy afternoon to enjoy!

Ruby Ann's Down Home Trailer Park Cookbook Review

Ruby Ann's Down Home Trailer Park Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My wife and I moved into a new home and one of the gifts was a box with all three of Ruby Ann's books inside. At the moving party we all started to read aloud little selections from the books. I started out with Ruby Ann's Down Home Trailer Park Cookbook. Within seconds the entire room was filled with laughter. Before we knew it, it was 11 PM. Every thing else like the planned party games and such had taken a backseat because of the laughter that all of us, including my 57 year old boss and his wife, my grand parents, and even the teenagers in the room, shared will reading Ms. Boxcars books. Even if you don't like to cook, the stories alone are well worth the price. Since that evening, we have tried the food and to be honest, it is as tasty as the rest of the books are funny. TWO THUMBS WAY UP FOR RUBY ANN AND HER BOOKS!

Cider Beans, Wild Greens, and Dandelion Jelly: Recipes from Southern Appalachia Review

Cider Beans, Wild Greens, and Dandelion Jelly: Recipes from Southern Appalachia
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"My place, in the midst of this abundance of nature, is back in a mountain hollow on a bad dirt road surrounded by forest, wild blackberries, mountain critters, wildflowers, a few neighbors, and a passel of 'dawgs.'"
So writes Joan Aller, author of this season's must-have cookbook, "Cider Beans, Wild Greens, and Dandelion Jelly: Recipes from Southern Appalachia."

And it's not like Joan Aller is an East Tennessee native who's walked the Appalachian trail with the likes of Bill Bryson or South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford. She's from the West, and might be living there still but for urban sprawl and environmental ugliness. So she first moved to Nashville, which is very much a city, and then further East.

Joan Aller is an artist by profession and fearless by nature. No soon had she painted her mailbox than she was off, photographing barns and bridges and learning the ways of her new neighbors. That led quickly to food --- and five years of research. At the end, she had gorgeous photographs of Southern Appalachia, luscious photographs of Southern food, and 8,000 pages of recipes and history.

The good news is that Ms. Aller and her editors put her work on a diet. The result is a 212-page book that was extravagantly handsome until my wife and I started dog-earing the pages. Silly us --- we want to cook almost everything here. Our only non-starters: Appalachian wine, root beer and --- no kidding --- moonshine.

See if just the names don't make you look at your watch to see if it's time for some meal or other: Kentucky "hot brown" (turkey-bacon-Colby cheese sandwich drenched in Tabasco-spiked milk gravy), Mississippi Sin (French bread, cream cheese, cheddar cheese, cooked ham, sour cream, accented with sweet onion, bell pepper and Worcestershire sauce), Butternut Squash Soup with Sweet Tea and Ginger, George Washington Carver's Sweet Potato Pie, Bourbon Sweet Potato Casserole, Corn Cob Jelly, And a dip made of equal parts chopped sweet onion, grated cheese and mayonnaise, baked for 25 minutes at 350.

And....but you see the problem --- with the possible exception of boring old blue cheese balls, this book rocks like the Allman Brothers.

There are many cookbooks about Southern cooking, but precious few celebrate the southern Appalachian food that has sustained mountain folk past and present. Thankfully, we now have Joan E. Aller's Cider Beans, Wild Greens, and Dandelion Jelly.Featuring more than 150 recipes for down-home, soul-satisfying dishes, Cider Beans, Wild Greens, and Dandelion Jelly is more than just a cookbook. Complete with passages on the history, places, and people of southern Appalachia, along with lush full-color photography of the food and scenery of the southern Appalachian Mountains, Cider Beans, Wild Greens, and Dandelion Jelly serves as both a cookbook and a guided tour of the local lore, traditions, and culture of this uniquely American region.

Southern Plate: Classic Comfort Food That Makes Everyone Feel Like Family Review

Southern Plate: Classic Comfort Food That Makes Everyone Feel Like Family
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have followed Christy's blog for a long time. I found her site when I was searching for a recipe for sweet tea, which I'd never made. Her recipe was SO easy, and tastes incredible! That same day, I made her strawberry pie, which was as easy as, well, pie. Christy can't be topped. Her recipes are ideal for "regular" cooks like me, who are cooking for families on a budget, trying to satisfy picky eaters, and trying to make great food around time constraints.
Christy has a way of explaining things that make it SO easy to follow her recipes. I am a pretty good cook, and I enjoy trying new recipes with varying levels of difficulty. Some cookbooks just don't guide you through some of the more challenging steps or the directions are unclear, and I waste time standing there trying to interpret what they mean. But reading and preparing Christy's recipes is like having a good friend standing by you, guiding you through and cheering you on as you go.
I will also be getting a copy for my daughter, as she's just "out of the nest" and learning to cook on her own. Since I can't be there myself to help her cook, I'm going to send Christy's book as my "proxy", and that's the next best thing to being there!
Thank you, Christy, for helping me feed my family good food that they like easily, quickly, inexpensively, and with love!
