Sexual Healing: A Novel Review

Who would have ever thought that women could have such power over their sexual lives. Jill Nelson gives that power to us in "spades". This amusing, erotic, sometimes alarming, always entertaining first novel is a must-read from beginning to end. Ms. Nelson captures the frustration and loneliness of African-American women and offers a solution which is unorthodox, pleasurable, and, frequently, downright hysterical. The book is erotic and moving as well as roll on the floor funny. Some of the scenes are so steamy that I was loathe to read them on the subway for fear of embarrasing myself! Ms. Nelson's first work of fiction is as well-written and engaging as her previous non-fiction offerings. The main characters, Lydia and Acey, are fully realized, infinitely human, and engaging, and the plotlines' twists and turns keep you turning pages with a fury. I read the entire book over the weekend! Not content to write a book which deals with women's concerns about finding love and/or sex in the 21st century, Ms. Nelson throws political intrigue, race relations, ghost spouses, and transexuals into the mix. All of these elements come together to bring us a read that is at once thought provoking and entertaining. Don't just walk, run to get this book! You won't regret it. And once you've finished reading Sexual Healing, you'll find yourself clamoring for more fiction from this superb and uproarious author.

The Wedding: A Novel Review

The Wedding: A Novel

Shelby Coles chooses a husband, and this should be cause for a glorious celebration for the pampered summer residents of The Oval at Martha's Vineyard. However, it is the skin color of her beloved that unravels the underlying issues of race, identity, and history among these people. Set in the 50s, The Wedding portrays generational and contemporary issues among a group of upper-class African-Americans. The reader is allowed to glimpse into the most personal of issues with the various characters including Shelby herself, her mother, her father, and her grandmother. When a horrible tragedy is introduced into the mix, we also see how these characters either pull together or fall apart.
Yes, this is a novel that touches on racial issues and "place" in society. It is difficult to present these characters without also presenting the way that skin color affects all aspects of their lives. However, I really appreciate the intricate family relationships that are presented in this story. West does an amazing job of painting some realistic people during a very confusing time in American history.

Love Is Never Painless: Three Novellas Review

This book was off the hook!!! I literally finished it in 2 days!! I can't say if it was because I was going through something myself at the time, or if the book was just plain reality that hit me where it hurts...but whatever the case may be, I'm glad I purchased this book because it helped me to get through my own drama. This was one of the best reads I have ever laid hands on. The first novel hits you and it makes you say, "I love myself and I love the people that love me!" Then the second novel hits you and it makes you say, "that's what you get for not giving me the love that I so deeply found and gave to you," But then the third novel hits you and it makes you say, "what the hell have I been thinking and doing all of this time - wake up sista!" Eileen Johnson, V. Anthony Rivers, and Zane...YA'LL PUT IT DOWN!
