The Whole Foods Diabetic Cookbook Review

The Whole Foods Diabetic Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I turn to this cookbook regularly. Whether I'm cooking for myself, for company, or for a potluck dinner, I can always find something good *and* easy in its pages. The Far East Fried Rice recipe is now my standard (and much-complimented) potluck dish, and several others, including the Easy Lentil Stew, are regulars in my kitchen. Although I was a meat eater and therefore not used to vegetarian cooking when I bought this book, I never found the recipes to call for ingredients I couldn't find at my regular grocery store, or thought that the end products were anything less than delicious. This is more than just a cookbook -- the helpful discussion of nutrition and diabetes at the beginning of the book makes it a good reference, too -- but the recipes are really what makes it special. The cooking directions are brief but thorough and easy to follow. Also, because I am now a vegan, I greatly appreciate the simple and tasty recipes for making alternatives to standard cheese dishes. Whether you are a vegetarian/vegan or not, whether you need to follow a diabetic diet or not, I recommend this cookbook highly.

PICNIC: 125 Recipes with 29 Seasonal Menus Review

PICNIC: 125 Recipes with 29 Seasonal Menus
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, it is nigh impossible to find a decent cookbook for less than $..., but to find a great cookbook for under $... (Amazon's price), is a true discovery.
But we need to beg the question: even if it is a bargain, do you need another book just for picnics? I mean, picnics are simple, right? Chicken, potato salad, wine, salt, pepper and some napkins. Well, if you have picnic atrophy and go only once a year, then you're fine with the 'Colonel.' However, if you, by chance, plan to cultivate the cultured outdoor dining side of you, Stovel is your mentor.
Stovel breaks up the book into the four seasons, and within each season she gives multiple menus (Spring 6, Summer 12, Fall 7 and Winter 4 menus). Each menu normally has five items. For example: Stovel's, 'Spring Day-Hike Picnic' menu has: grilled chicken fillets in a spinach wrap, artichoke salad, carrot sticks, gingerbread and fruit, with herbal iced tea. Her menus are thoughtful, flavorful, and balanced by having only one or two unique items out of the five. Her recipes are easy to follow and very tasty. This is a text only, there are no photos of the plates.
I thought Picnics were fun, kinda fast, intimate (like for two) and cheap. But the recipes here are for eight people! I have never had a picnic with eight people. I have had a church gathering and a Super Bowl sporting event, but not a picnic with eight people.Perhaps Stovel comes from a large family and see her readers bringing mom, dad, grandma and the five kids along; but in today's world of virtual families, recipes for eight are an overkill. Thus, because my picnics are for two, every recipe has to be cut in half and then I still have a picnic basket of left overs.
Also, sometimes, the ingredients for these recipes doubled my weekly grocery budget. For example, the ingredients for the 'Artichoke Salad' (pg.16) set me back $16 by the time I bought three jars of marinated artichoke hearts $9, six sun-dried tomatoes [you gotta buy the whole jar] $4, mushrooms, scallions, etc. Or consider the 'Fresh Fruit Bowl Kaleidoscope' costing more than $17 not counting the Grand Marnier Liqueur' which is a heart-stopping $4, just for 50ml.
These points aired, this is a wonderful book that has recipes that can be used year round, picnic or not (Try 'Tante's Coffee Cake' and 'Currant Oat Scones' - Excellent). 'Picnic' is an excellent buy for the money. Recommended. 4 stars

P. Allen Smith's Seasonal Recipes from the Garden Review

P. Allen Smith's Seasonal Recipes from the Garden
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Seasonal Recipes is of course divided into the seasons, each section containing; starters, soups and sandwiches, salads, main dishes, vegetables and sides, bread and such, and desserts. There is also a section on how to grow your own ingredients.
The purpose is to prepare food to match the season. There are black and white pictures of Smith's family and most of the recipes have colour pictures. There is also an introduction to each recipe and many of them are ones that even picky eaters might find palatable.
This is not strictly a vegetarian book. There are plenty of recipes for vegetables, but also ones that have chicken, pork, seafood and beef. The recipes are not that hard, but are different and fresh. Two of our family favorites are the Sweet Potato Bread and Kent's Killer Fresh Apple Cake.
This book is definitely for those who wish to cook some diverse recipes and stay in tune with the four seasons.

Baking Basics and Beyond: Learn These Simple Techniques and Bake Like a Pro Review

Baking Basics and Beyond: Learn These Simple Techniques and Bake Like a Pro
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Baking Basics tells you everything you ever wanted to know about baking-and then some. The first section has a list of pans, equipment and ingredients commonly used in baking. Ingredients are listed separately and some information is given for each ingredient such as the types of yeasts and how to successfully use them, the chocolates and how to melt them. Most of the ingredients are staples that you will already have in your cupboards; however, should there be an unusual ingredient a suggested substitution is given such as almond extract for Amaretto liqueur. More is told about ingredients as they are being used. At the end of the recipe are Baker's Notes and/or Secrets to Success, which give extra hints, techniques or substitutions.
At the beginning of each section are more easy-to-follow directions and guidance to help increase your success. Each recipe has step-by-step, clear and understandable directions. The recipes are familiar foods such as cinnamon-coated snickerdoodles, tangy, luscious lemon meringue pie and basic pizza. A few not so familiar but deceptively easy include Tourtiere, the French Canadian meat pie. I recommend the Savory Chicken Cobbler, a cross between a chicken pot pie and chicken and dumplings. This dish is light and easy, using a rotisserie chicken and frozen mixed vegetables. Make_ certain you have several people to share the 4-6 servings, or you will eat it all.
The Beyond part of the cookbook is "embellishments that transform a cake from basic to deluxe." Simple-to-do frostings, sauces, glazes and garnishes that add something special to desserts, taking them from so-so to spectacular.
Calorie count and nutritional values are not in the recipes, however, while you are tasting a piece of warm, fresh-from-the-oven, Grammy's apple pie or Mississippi Mud Cake, calories are not uppermost in your mind.
If you are a beginning cook, this cookbook would be the perfect place to start. Mrs. Sinclair takes your hand and leads you through, telling you what you need to know to complete a successful and delicious food. You can be tossing out scones and popovers like a trained chef. Do not go to your kitchen without this cookbook.

In a warm, reassuring manner, Pat Sinclair leads beginning bakers step-by-step through each recipe, thoroughly explaining each technique and direction. What to Eat with IBD: A Comprehensive Nutrition and Recipe Guide for Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis Review

What to Eat with IBD: A Comprehensive Nutrition and Recipe Guide for Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is an invaluable resource to those affected by IBD. The author is a registered dietitian with a Master's degree in nutrition who has had IBD since the age of nineteen. (I also have a Master's degree in nutrition and found all of her nutrition information to be accurate.) The first part of the book contains essential information as to how to achieve a nutritionally adequate diet despite the problems associated with IBD. The reader will learn which foods can cause inflammation and bowel irritation, which foods can nourish and heal the bowel, how to avoid food-borne illness, which nutrient supplements are necessary, and what forms of these recommended supplements are best absorbed.
The second part of the book contains over 50 kitchen-tested nutrient rich recipes that the entire family can enjoy. Recipes for tasty shakes are also included that can be used as meal-replacements when appetite is poor.
As a parent of a child with Crohn's disease, I continually keep abreast of new materials on IBD. Unfortunately, I have found some deleterious dietary misinformation about IBD on the market.
In contrast, I was so impressed with "What to Eat with IBD" that I contacted the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) to tell them how helpful I think this book would be.

Cry of the Kalahari Review

Cry of the Kalahari
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Of the many books I've read about wildlife, this one sticks in my mind as one of the best, even though it's been several years since I first read it. Some books like George Schaller's "The Serengeti Lion" have more sceintific bent and therefore keep a 'professional distance' from the animals, while others such as those by Joy Adamson and Gareth Patterson become very personal with the animals and lose much of their objectivity. But Mark and Delia Owens find a happy medium between the two extremes, one where we learn a lot about the lions, brown hyenas and other animals they study in the Kalahari desert, but also come to know some of the individuals among these animals as friends.
We also get a taste of life in the Kalahari desert in the middle of Botswana, some of the hardships and life-threatening situations encountered by the Owenses. And we share the issues and concerns they tried to raise in the governments and landowners of the territories where they spent seven years living and studying animals.
At various times this book made me smile. It made me mad. It made me sad. It made me laugh. And it made me wish I could spend a few years of my life studying and living among wildlife as they did.

More from the Gluten-free Gourmet: Delicious Dining Without Wheat

Ms. Hagman's three Gluten-Free Gourmet cookbooks have been a godsend to me. Not only have I been happy with all of her recipes, but I have learned from her cookbooks how to experiment with various gluten-free flours to adapt favorite recipes to be "safe" for me on a more restricted diet. _More from the Gluten-Free Gourmet_ is Ms. Hagman's second book, and the first in which she offers recipes to be made in a bread machine. I would strongly recommend purchasing all three of her cookbooks, but if one only wants to buy - or to start with - one book, I feel that this would be the most helpful one. Enjoy!

Bette Hagman's first book, The Gluten-free Gourmet, brought good-tasting food back into the lives of the millions who are intolerant to the gluten in wheat, oats, barley, or rye, or who are allergic to wheat. Responding to a flood of requests for "more, more, more," she offers more than 265 additional gluten-free recipes for tasty meals. Now with a gourmet look, this book is as irresistible as ever for gluten-intolerant chefs and their families.

Baking always seemed impossible to me - I'd be lucky to get anything to rise, my food would always weigh a ton and, basically, unless someone really loved me, they probably wouldn't eat more than a couple bites. But with Baking for Dummies, all that has changed. I now whip out cupcakes, breads
and pastry with ease. I can't say enough about the handy tips that the author includes, I've found them extremely useful with other recipies as well. I'm fattening up my office mates with the bounty from my oven and finding that there is great piece of mind in baking.

Cooking on the Edge of Insanity Review

Cooking on the Edge of Insanity
Average Reviews:

This book offers plenty of recipes; but for me, it was more about inspiring readers to be creative and inventive in the kitchen. The recipes are based on a philosophy of using locally grown, organic and unprocessed foods. But unlike many other cookbooks I've encountered, this one is not designed to make you feel guilty or inferior. Rather than being preachy, this book is delightful and entertaining, written by a real person with a real family and real food challenges. It's like reading an email from your best friend. Even if you never cook, it's worth much more than $3 just for the pleasure of reading it.

The Buttercup Bake Shop Cookbook: More Than 80 Recipes for Irresistible, Old-Fashioned Treats
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I agree with the first reviewer of this book that the key word here is "old fashioned." These are the desserts that you turn to when you want something warm and familiar, and that'll settle into your stomach with a delightful plop.
Right from the start, the author makes it clear that all her desserts are made from scratch with whole milk, real butter, and white sugar. While die-hard health buffs might scream at the thought of no low-fat anything in this book, most dessert lovers like me revel in the Red Velvet Cake, Banana Cream Pudding (presented in a most novel way!), Oatmeal Butterscotch Cookies, cupcakes, and Rice Crispies Treats, which, (for me) was a hard to find recipe until I bought this book.
This book is simple pleasure and it takes you back to the joy of baking. There are no fancy, gravity-defying desserts here - just sheer delicious desserts you can make at home.

How It All Vegan 10th Anniversary Edition: Irresistible Recipes for an Animal-Free Diet Review

How It All Vegan 10th Anniversary Edition: Irresistible Recipes for an Animal-Free Diet
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I felt it was time to get a vegan cookbook, after veganizing regular recipes. Of all the many vegan cookbooks in the bookstore, I chose this one after careful consideration. In fact, I didn't pick one on the first trip to the bookstore, because I couldn't decide. It took a second trip to make a decision. Picking the right vegan cookbook would be an important decision because I knew I would be using the book a lot.
This vegan cookbook is more than just a cookbook. I found the stories about the authors, that were in the beginning of the book, to be interesting. The book also tells other facts and interesting things about veganism. For example, it tells how you can get protein, calcium, B12 when you are a vegan.
I was grateful for the substitutions, especially for eggs and milk. This book also has recipes for household cleaners and health/beauty products. It also gives 44 things to do with vinegar. It gives suggestions to feeding kids on the road. This book has so much interesting information.
Now for the recipes. Of course, I haven't tried them all yet. (Probably will never try all of them.)
The apricot & almond tea cookies on page 149 are really awesome. I didn't have any apricots, so I used peaches and apples, and they turned out really good. I guess any type of fruit would work. They are awesome tea cookies. I guess coffee would go good with them, also, but in this heat, cold tea sounds a lot better than hot coffee. I can't wait to make another batch.
The biscuits on page 128 are easy to make, and they taste good. I will be making them a lot more often.
I will not talk about all the recipes I've tried. This book is loaded with so many good-looking and good-sounding recipes.
In the recipes that call for soy milk, I substitute it with coconut milk, because I do not use soy milk, or any soy product. I do not eat soy of any type. To me, soy tastes like dirt or metal.
This is not only a wonderful vegan cookbook, but a fun book. Highly recommended if you want some vegan recipes, or health/beauty/household recipes, if you just want some good laughs.

Since it was first published in 1999, How It All Vegan! has become a bible for vegan cooks, both diehard and newly converted; its basic introduction to the tenets of vegan living and eating, combined with Sarah Kramer's and Tanya Barnard's winning charm, made it an essential cookbook for anyone considering eschewing animal products from their diet. It won VegNews' Veggie Award for Best Cookbook twice, has been reprinted fourteen times, and spawned several successful sequels (including The Garden of Vegan, La Dolce Vegan!, and last year's Vegan à Go-Go!).

In the ten years since How It All Vegan! was first published, however, veganism has "come out of the closet," and is now considered a legitimate diet and lifestyle not only for those wishing to improve their health, but also for those who care deeply about the welfare of animals. This tenth-anniversary edition includes a new color photo section and new recipes; it also includes a new introduction by co-author Sarah Kramer, who speaks personally and passionately about the impact of veganism on her life over the past decade.

Tanya Barnard is the mother of a newborn son and lives in Kelowna, BC, Canada.

Sarah Kramer was named "The World's Coolest Vegan" by Herbivore magazine. In addition to creating her vegan masterpieces and maintaining her popular website GoVegan.net, she also owns and operates Tattoo Zoo with her husband in Victoria, BC, Canada.

Hors d'Oeuvres Review

Hors d'Oeuvres
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is one of the best and one of the worst cookbooks I have ever used. On the plus side: great and easy-to-make recipes, detailed guidance on preparing foods in advance, and helpful, pretty illustrations. I use this book more than any other hors d'oeuvres cookbook that I have, and my party guests rave about the results. On the negative side: Very very careless editing -- the worst I've ever seen in a professionally published cookbook. Ingredient lists will include ingredients that are never mentioned in the texts of the recipes, but that are clearly required. At least one recipe begins with instructions to preheat the oven (and then the oven is never used). Worst of all: ingredient lists which contain plain errors (such as a cookie recipe which gives the amount of required butter in both grams and cups, but the amount of butter given in grams is one half the amount given in cups.) In using this book, proceed with caution.

Delicious Food for a Healthy Heart Review

Delicious Food for a Healthy Heart
Average Reviews:

This book has over 120 heart healthy, delicious recipes for vegans and non-vegans alike! Let me get this out of the way...my absolute, hands down, favorite recipe in this book: "Linguine With Spicy Red Garbanzo Sauce". The simplicity of the healthful ingredients was a real shock to me. I figured ok, another spaghetti recipe...It is so much more. Serve it with some "Cheezy Garlic Bread" and a spinach salad topped with "Tomato-Garlic Dressing". Do your palate and your heart a favor...With a mere 21 calories and 0 fat, this dressing packs a punch! Of course if you've been missing ranch, there is the "Classic Ranch Dressing" to try as well...so creamy! The "Moroccan CousCous" is authentic and tasty. I love it! "Garlic Infused Smashed Potatoes" are heavenly when smothered in "Golden Gravy". It almost seems wrong that there is 0 guilt associated with these dishes! Looking for breakfast? Try what is (in my opionion) a vegan's best friend...flax! The "Flaxjacks" on page 40 are a tasty way to start your day right. I like to top them with "Peanut Whip" instead of jam. "Tropical Style Museli" is filling and healthful, I love it with a dash of vanilla rice milk.
Of course there are too many recipes to review them all here, but I always save room for dessert...in this book namely the "Apple Crisp". Simple, traditional and stunning...a real crowd-pleasing crisp.
This book is chock full of recipes, 14 days of menus, information to keep your heart happy and extensive information on ingredients. I like that the grain section even offers pressure-cooker alternatives for most of the dishes.
Kudos to you Jo, you've done it again!
