I highly recommend this book to every dog owner. I have made a few recipes and my dog Millie loves them. I have even given some away to co-workers who have dogs. One of them has a dog that will not eat dog treats. She gave him one of the peanut butter carob cookies I baked and he ate them. There are many different types of yummy treats. I have purchased other dog treat cookbooks and this one is by far the best and my favorite!

Desperation Dinners Review

Desperation Dinners
Average Reviews:

I admit that I was skeptical when I purchased this book. I was expecting yet another book full of "canned" recipes -- you know the type: a can of this, a can of that, few fresh ingredients. Boy, was *I* surprised!
While the book does take advantage of convenience foods -- pre-chopped veggies, frozen chopped onions, etc. -- it uses mostly fresh vegetables, meats, and readily available herbs, spices, and condiments. I've made several recipes from this book and haven't had a problem yet. My first was the cream of wild mushroom soup -- a heavenly silky concoction made with several varieties of mushrooms that reminded me a soup I'd eaten in an excellent Swedish restaurant some years ago. Outstanding!
And the authors are true to their word -- if you follow the directions, you'll complete each dish in 20 minutes or less. You'll keep busy for those 20 minutes, but you WILL finish. Each recipe is marked to let you know if you need to pre-heat the oven, boil water, etc. -- which aren't usually included in the 20 minutes.
As a cookbook collector, I purchased Desperation Dinners as another example of "quick and easy" cuisine. It's now on my "most used" shelf!
August 2007: It's now six years later since I wrote that review above, and this is STILL my most-used cookbook. I have over 2500 books in my cookbook collection, but this is the one I reach for first. I've made probably 30-40% of the recipes in the book, but I still have my favorites (that cream of mushroom soup, for instance). If you're looking for down-to-earth recipes that use everyday ingredients, but use them in creative ways, this is the book for you. Seriously. It's worth the investment.

The Veselka Cookbook: Recipes and Stories from the Landmark Restaurant in New York's East Village Review

If you live in New York City, Veselka'a is probably your best friend already; and if you don't, it's worth a trip to New York. The Borscht is the best, as are the pierogis, the soups, and also the tastiest burger. All the best recipes are in the cookbook. The ingredients are accessible and the recipes easy to follow. And if you read the stories as you go along, it's the next best thing to being there. If you love Ukranian food, American food, and good food in general, treat yourself and buy this book. Then buy another copy to give to your best friend who also loves good food. Now I'm waiting for the sequel...

Food Styling: The Art of Preparing Food for the Camera Review

Food Styling: The Art of Preparing Food for the Camera
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Whether you are a veteran chef, photographer etc or novice 'wanna be', this is an essential "must have" for your collection. At nearly 400 pages, this is a comprehensive undertaking that doesn't compromise quality or clarity. Here is why this is a "MUST HAVE" for anyone remotely interested in the culinary arts, food styling, photography or related trends.
1. Comprehensive. As mentioned, this is nearly 400 pages packed FULL of information. There is a balanced blend of photographs and text without one dominating the other. Instead, each enhances the other with ample detail/discussion and pertinent photos. Tone is conversational yet complete providing veteran and novice readers sufficient information to achieve desired results.
2. Beautiful Big Book. Not only is the book 400 pages but it's a large book. This is the hard cover with a clear dust jacket...complete with a "peel away" safety sheeting! Organized for ease of use, no detail is missed. Lovely Headings are bold/brightly colored for quick reference, ample charts/other make for simple comparison, excellent resource/glossary and index section. It is obvious a great deal of care went into the creation of this resource!
3. Content. Of course, any food styling book wouldn't be worth much without superb content and this is where Custer really excels. Tips and excellent information abound...from basic tidbits to in-depth discussion that can only come from years of experience, it's obvious the author is an expert in every sense of the word. I am absolutely smitten by the level of detail - combined with clarity - provided throughout. Chapter highlights include:
-Food Styling Overview
-The Medium is Everything
-Your Food Styling Teammates
-You Got the Job...Now What?
-Prepping the Assignment
-At the Shoot
-About Photography
-The Basics of Propping
-The Basics of Tv & Film Production Work
-The Food Stylists Tools of the Trade
-Working with the Food
-The Business of Food Styling
-Beyond Food Styling
-Tips for Chefs, Caterers, and Others who want to Style their Food
-Reviewing the Last Fifty/sixty years of Food styling and photography
However, within each of the above chapter are numerous sub=sections, tips, pertinent photographs, charts and much more. For example, a seemingly "mundane" topic related to the tools of the trade, we get a quick peak into the kit and set tray. We see actual examples of a simple kit set-up, the set tray, a listed photograph of each individual tool plus tips of the trade that make all the difference in a day to day setting. For example, how do you know which type of rice to cook and when? Find out on page 145!
How do you make a panini look enticing...rather than that big flat floppy thing you create in your own kitchen? Find out on page 207!
What is available when and how do you locate out of season fruits/vegies? Find out on pages 171-173!
This is just a very short sample of the incredible amount of information contained in this book. It is NOT fluff or filler...rather page after page of great information!
For those that are comparing this to the other available options, this wins hands down.
I also own Food Styling for Photographers: A Guide to Creating Your Own Appetizing Art by Linda Bellingham and Jean Ann Bybee...an excellent resource but not nearly as comprehensive or detailed as this book.
Digital Food Photography by Lou Manna is another book I own/use but it tends to focus much more on the basics of digital photography. Many of the techniques and tricks/tips are duplicates from the comprehensive book "Food Styling" by Delores Custer.
Without a doubt, this is an absolute "must have" that will be used repeatedly. A perfect companion for anyone wanting to enter the field of food styling. It assumes nothing yet provides depth and details to inspire and inform even veteran styling professionals.
Exceptional!

The 8-Week Cholesterol Cure: How to Lower Your Cholesterol by Up to 40 Percent Without Drugs or Deprivation Review

The 8-Week Cholesterol Cure: How to Lower Your Cholesterol by Up to 40 Percent Without Drugs or Deprivation
Average Reviews:

I had no desire to take pharmaceuticals to lower my cholesterol, since they seem tailored to "stabilize the plaque" which has already deposited-out in the arteries of people with high cholesterol, as well as to lower the levels of cholesterol. My desire was to lower the levels, yes, but also to dissolve-away the deposits, if any, and not to put a hard coating on them. The Niacin and Oat Bran regimen that Kowalsky writes about is good to find out about because it can have these effects that I desired. I started with a Total cholesterol level of 288, and in 120 days it measured 161 at the same lab. This is a diminution of 44%! And the ratio went from 50% over "dangerous" to 50% over "protective." Triglycerides went from 209 down to 97. I am pleased as punch. This treatment is so simple and so inexpensive that one wishes to evangelize for it. I believe this book could save many lives; I would like to give it as a little gift to friends who have elevated levels, and whom I would like to keep as friends for many more decades. Best wishes to all readers! Try it, with your doctor's consultation: you may like it!

Baking 9-1-1: Rescue from Recipe Disasters; Answers to Your Most Frequently Asked Baking Questions; 40 Recipes for Every Baker

If you love to bake - BUY THIS BOOK! I read it for hours the first day I received it & thoroughly enjoyed the hundreds of tips & chemistry `lessons'. Alton Brown once said - "while cooking is art, baking is not -- it is mostly chemistry" - & as such, this book helps you understand why your brownies fell in the middle or why your whole wheat bread isn't rising... It takes you step-by-step into the how's & why's of baking unlike any other book I've seen.
Also, don't hesitate to use the author's great "Ask Sarah" website if you have a problem that isn't covered in her book (www.baking911.com). Sarah is very quick to respond. I am a professional baker (we manufacture Java Bites Espresso Cookies sold here on Amazon) & she helped me out of a jam during the early recipe developement of this cookie line.
One note of caution: If you are looking for another recipe book - this is not it. While the recipes in her book are excellent, you won't find them in abundance. This is more of a how-to-bake-practically-anything book, with a sampling of recipes to support all the tips. You can find a plethora of recipes on her site though.
Good luck - & happy baking!

Simple Treats: A Wheat-Free, Dairy-Free Guide to Scrumptious Baked Goods Review

WHAT A RELIEF! I really appreciate the fact that I can offer my kids (and friends and family) treats that won't do their bodies harm. Thankfully, I stumbled across an ad for this cookbook on a vegan website and decided to click the link. Now I don't have to spend time experimenting on desserts anymore! My main reason for buying this book was because the author created recipes that are not only vegan but also healthy. There is absolutely no white flour or white sugar in any of them, not even wheat, nothing processed. You'd think...how could a recipe with ingredients like barley flour or maple syrup work, right? It does! Believe me, I've been sharing the cookies with my omnivore friends, and they LOVE them--even the kids! I just got the book about two weeks ago and have already tried 4 types of cookies (pecan sandies, oatmeal raisin, cashew thumbprints, and cinnamon crisps) and two types of muffins (blueberry and corn). Overall they were EXCELLENT! My mistake with the corn muffins was that I should have added a little extra liquid which the author noted I might need. I plan on working my way through the whole book. There are all kinds of quick breads, muffins, scones, cookies, brownies, blondies, cakes, cremes, frostings, fillings, and glazes. Plus, it's written very simply, and the recipes can be put together in no time at all. I've even been in touch with the author through emails. She happily answered all of my questions. Check out her website. http://www.simpletreats.com/ It's on line store. She bakes and sells all the goodies in this book and ships them to you (if you don't want to do the work yourself).I'd encourage anyone who loves to bake and is also concerned about using healthy ingredients to purchase Simple Treats today because it's a winner! DELICIOUS!
