Safe House (Tom Clancy's Net Force; Young Adults, No. 10) Review

Safe House (Tom Clancy's Net Force; Young Adults, No. 10)

These Net Force books are all short, easy to read, and interesting. Like the others that I have read, this one fulfills the promise of the creaters. In this book, Maj's life becomes even more interesting than usual when a younger visitor comes to her home - as an escapee. Her interaction and work with other Net Force Explorers adds character and excitement to the book. Creative design on the Net and action-adventure combine to make this one more in a good series to get and read, for both parents and children. If this is how and what the 'Net' will become, I am all for it. I especially like the values transmitted by the authors in these books. I only wish that I had, again, a younger child to share these with now. I plan on keeping them for my future grandchildren. Maybe by then these books will read like 'history'. Keep it up, authors.

The Everything Kids' Cookbook: From mac n cheese to double chocolate chip cookies - 90 recipes to have some finger-lickin fun (Everything Kids Series)

I am not the biggest fan of the Everything books: I have found their text to be over-simplified. However, here, it plays in their flavor tremendously. Like the fantastic Mom and Me Cookbook by Annabel Karmel, (which I can't recommend enough if you are looking to cook cutesy-crafty items with your kids, especially younger ones) this book gives illustrated utensils needs (like if it needs an oven to make, then there's a little picture of an oven at the top of the recipe) and starts with a glossary of cooking terms and safety guidelines. It's got a great little guide for how to set a table, and is full of puzzles for the older kids to do and tips about any number of things that have to do with the meal. It also includes a difficulty level which is terribly handy when you're cooking with younger children or children spaced far apart (like mine). It also has a very handy conversion chart (you know, how many cups in a gallon sort of thing) that for me, is worth the purchase price alone.
But what I love about this book most of all is that it is REALLY full of kidcentric recipes. I didn't find a single recipe that would not appeal to my children, plus in the end, it included a chapter entitled "Let's Play Some More" which had five craft recipes including making bubbles and edible finger paints! I was especially pleased to see a chapter entitled Lunches, Sandwiches, and Brown Bag Ideas for which my nine-year old is extremely grateful-- "Bologna and Cheese, or peanut butter and jelly?" is the most asked question in our house besides, "Did you use the blowdarts on the kids again? They're awfully quiet."
Anyway, this book truly gives you what you are really looking for-LOTS OF EASY DINNER IDEAS constructed around your children joining in. I have found that most children's cookbooks (even the aforementioned Mom and Me Cookbook) have a majority (or at least half) of sweets as opposed to really good dinner fare, and this includes both working together without leaving the most difficult meal to come up with out of the picture. I mean, if you want to make a dessert with your kids, almost all of them are thrilled with a roll of pre-made cookie dough or a boxed cake mix-are they not? Dinner is another matter, and I think it's important to be able to include them on such an important daily chore. Imagine the gap-toothed happy grin when you point out to your spouse that they did a great deal of work on dinner knowing that you are instilling the importance of working as a team to provide a meal for the family-it's priceless. This book helps you do this without strapping you or the children with a hard-to follow recipe that doesn't appeal to the children.
I also want to note that I highly recommend this book for the ten or eleven year old that has expressed a desire to learn to cook-if they love to read then this is the book for them, and the book covers safety in detail so I would have no problem letting them loose with the easy recipes by themselves-with supervision, of course, but in the hands of a mature 12-year-old, you could sit and read the paper while they work at dinner (just the thought makes you giddy, does it not???) They will be well-educated and also enjoy the puzzles as well-it would make a great gift for the inquisitive and studious tweenager who loves to help out around the house.
I have to honestly say, this cookbook is in my top two for children. It's a good purchase by half.

The King Arthur Flour 200th Anniversary Cookbook (King Arthur Flour Cookbooks) Review

The King Arthur Flour 200th Anniversary Cookbook (King Arthur Flour Cookbooks)

I consider myself to be very picky regarding what cookbooks I own - I'll read any cookbook but I won't buy them for my reference shelf. This cookbook is a keeper! Sands deftly tells you not only the "how" of each recipe but the "why". I've read plenty of the "chemistry of baking" and other such books, but this is the first that truly explained certain principles of baking to me (like why yeast doughs rise faster on humid days). There are even, in addition to the hundreds of recipes for baked goods, instructions on making your own play dough and paper-mache using King Arthur Flour! Don't be fooled into thinking this is a coffee table cookbook though - everything is black and white with no pictures (only a few line illustrations for things like the different bread braiding techniques) - but you are bound to come back to this cookbook again and again (in fact, it might be a good idea to buy a cookbook cover as the pages are sure to get smudged with all your efforts).

Incredible Edible Gluten-Free Food for Kids: 150 Family-Tested Recipes Review

Incredible Edible Gluten-Free Food for Kids: 150 Family-Tested Recipes

I have a 4-year-old with celiac disease, so I was excited about this book. Unfortunately, when it arrived I discovered that the recipes didn't offer me as many new and different things to try as I had hoped. (I already own 4 other gluten-free cookbooks.) I tried the Breakast Muffin recipe. It was okay. Nothing special. If you don't own any gluten-free cookbooks already, this one may be good for you. Two things really bothered me. First the bread machine recipes never stated the size loaf you were making. I assume 2lb, but that's important info to leave out. Second, I felt that some recipes were included just to fill pages. One page is a recipe for a baked potato. The resources in the back are quite helpful, but you could easily find them other places.

Cooking for Isaiah: Gluten-Free & Dairy-Free Recipes for Easy Delicious Meals Review

Cooking for Isaiah: Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free Recipes for Easy Delicious Meals

I've been gluten free for about 9 years now, and I can't tell you how many recipes and flour combinations I have tried - mostly without success, at least in the bread department. I wasn't sure about buying another gluten free cookbook, but decided to try it out anyway. I wanted to make the pizza first since bread recipes are the hardest (in my humble opinion) to re-create gluten free. The pizza was delicious and has been the first gluten free bread that I have tried that actually emulates its wheat counterparts. Buy the book! I'm sure you won't be disappointed. There is a wide variety of recipes: pizza, doughnuts, risotto, pumpkin dumplings, coffee cake, etc.

"The cornbread was flavorful, moist and light with a deliciously tender crumb. My only hope with this recipe was that Isaiah would love it... And then Isaiah took a bite. The look on his face was pure heaven." Cooking for Isaiah is a love story of Silvana Nardone's journey to develop great-tasting meals for her son, Isaiah, after he was diagnosed with food intolerances to gluten and dairy. The results of her efforts are found in the pages of this book, through 135 recipes that are not only easy to make, but taste and look delicious. From "S'mores Pancakes with Marshmallow Sauce" to "Double-Decker Toasted Cornbread and Spicy Greens Stack," and "Chicken and Waffles with Maple Bacon Gravy" to "Chocolate Birthday Cake with Whipped Chocolate Frosting," all of the recipes in Cooking for Isaiah are entirely free of gluten and dairy. Crafted with a variety of cooks in mind, an ingredient substitution chart shows you what to swap if, for example, you need to cook without gluten, but dairy is okay. You'll also find Silvana's tried-and-tested all-purpose flour and pancake mix recipes, sure to make gluten-free cooking and baking accessible to all. Written by Silvana Nardone, Editor in Chief of Every Day with Rachael Ray magazine, this charming, personal cookbook belongs on every cook's shelf.

Savory Baking Review

Savory Baking
Average Reviews:

Jung was right, there is synchronicity. Mary Cech's new cookbook: Savory Baking, couldn't have arrived at a better time, as I have been experimenting with savory waffles for the past few months (combinations like cornmeal carrot, cheddar dill, and others).
Historically, there has been a bit of a schism between those who love to cook and those who bake. Many years ago, chefs were prejudiced against bakers, believing that "real" cooks couldn't bake, and implying bakers were a step, or two, below chefs. As someone who has always loved all the culinary arts, I found this annoying, to say the least. Ms. Cech has bridged the gap with an interesting collection of savory items to tempt the most baking-averse soul.
Some of her offerings include Peppered Pear and Goat Cheese Scones, Sour Cream Fig Spiral Cookies, Onion, Fennel, and Orange Upside Down Shortcake, and a slew of other creative concoctions to surprise your senses. The photographs are accurate looking, not over-the-top visuals you'll never achieve at home; and, there are plenty of them to inspire you.
Confetti Corn Bread Crusted Creole Shrimp is another little beauty that looked fairly easy to make. Her Fingerling Potato and Crispy Bacon Pizzas use phyllo dough to simplify things. Sharp Cheddar and Cherry Muffins were just lovely and quick to put together.
There's something here for everyone who likes savory food, including a whole section on fillings, spreads, dips, relishes, sauces, and chutney.
