Flax the Super Food: Over 80 Delicious Recipes Using Flax Oil and Ground Flaxseed Review

Flax the Super Food: Over 80 Delicious Recipes Using Flax Oil and Ground Flaxseed
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Flax - the Super Food - Book Review The Introduction, provides a helpful background on flax that's easy to understand. The author speaks from his experience, having developed, marketed, and distributed flax products for the health food market as well as studied flax farming and pressing techniques. Covered is the history of flax, from before Christ, to the present, including where flax is raised today. The author gives illustrations of how flax has helped both animals and humans. Flax can be a food and a medicine, both on the inside (in food and as a laxative) as well as on the outside (as poultices for healing wounds and healthy skin). There is a good explanation of the fiber, mucilage, lignans, and oil in flax and their health benefits. There are helpful consumer tips on how to purchase, use, and store flax oil and flax (both the brown and the newer gold varieties of flax.) The author stresses how to buy flax oil in small quantities, in dark containers, and "cold-expeller-pressed" as heating and refining changes the flax oil into unhealthy trans fats. The recipe section, written by two cookbook authors, features a variety of healthy, vegetarian recipes that include not only flax but also soy foods such as tofu and soy milk. Each recipe has a helpful nutritional analysis. To eliminate confusion ,it might help to explain whether a recipe calling for "ground flaxseeds" means to measure the flax before or after grinding. Some other helpful additions to the book might be: o A mini conversion chart of how much whole flax seed equals how much ground flax o A nutritional analysis of flax and flax oil, such as found on a food label, that would include the calories, fat, fiber, protein content, etc o A few more documented human research studies from places such as NCI (National Cancer Institute) to further substantiate the many health benefits of flax. o A bit more discussion by a nutritionist discussing omega 3 and omega 6 fats, including possibly a chart showing the fat composition of flax and flax oil by the percentage of each type of fat. o A list of flax resources (books, web sites) and places to get flax in the US and Canada - such as the Flax Council of Canada.

The Jack Sprat Low-Fat Diet: A 28-Day Heart-Healthy Plan You Can Follow the Rest of Your Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Jack Sprat, Low Fat is the best healthy lifestyle book (including a very conscientious 28-day example complete with "wart hog days"!) that we have ever found (I am the mom, not the 12 year old!). The authors masterfully reveal the culprits that create un-healthy eating habits, and address the issues as they pertain to the informed middle-class American culture. They soundly convince the reader of the dire importance of eating right. Even with a health background, I find that the older we get, the less time there is to committ to even our best lofty intentions of healthy changes! Bryant Stamford and his co-auther R.N. Becca Coffin do NOT endorse or promote any quick-fix or product, but prevail with undisputable common sense and digestable physiological facts the importance of living healthfully. I applaud this book! If you are an informed individual, but still looking for that perfect healthy-lifestyle resource, then look no further. You will find this book in a class of its own. I hope that you will appreciate it as much as I do.

The Complete Guide to Healthy Cooking and Nutrition for College Students: How Not to Gain 17 Pounds at College Review

The Complete Guide to Healthy Cooking and Nutrition for College Students: How Not to Gain 17 Pounds at College
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, I'm not a college student. However, I do have a granddaughter that will be entering college this coming year so I felt I should review this book to see if it is something to suggest to her.
There are many pluses in this book. Although the USDA Food Pyramid is taught in school addressing it I believe is of importance. It serves as a basic reminder of what requirements are necessary to maintain a healthy body. As well, I felt the section on basic supplies is important. Many times college students are given a mish-mash of stuff to set up their first apartment. The list in this book can be used to check-off or to request from kind donors. Then there is that "first" trip to the grocery story. The tips given will prevent impulse buying.
The recipes are simple and the ingredients can be easily found in the pantry of the college student. If not, the trip to the local grocery store will find what is needed. The author also provides nutrition facts for each recipe.
Healthy choices is the bottom line to not gaining weight when first on your own. I commend J. Lucy Boyd for compiling this very important book for college students. I encourage buying one for every high school grad you know. It may be the best gift they receive.

College students face a number of stigmas when they first leave home and start living on their own. From not having their parents nearby to help clean and answer questions to being responsible for their own cooking and cleaning, the move from High School to College can be a bit of shellshock for many teenagers. Nowhere is this more apparent than in their eating habits, where many college students experience a great deal of downward digression. A recent 2009 study, published in the Nutrition Journal, found that one in four freshman gain at least 5 percent of their body weight, an average of about 10 pounds, during their first semester. All of this can be avoided though with healthy cooking and an eye for good choices. This book was written to provide every college student just learning to cook for themselves with viable, affordable alternatives to pizza and ramen. Every college student will learn the basics of what it is they need to be focusing on in their diets after leaving home. Starting with a basic discussion and introduction of nutrition and what the body needs on a daily basis, you will learn additionally which foods and nutrients are best for improving your mental acuity as well as your sleep each night. You will learn the importance of fluids and proper nightly sleep to supplement your diet and will be given a list of different ailments and problems that might develop should these issues be ignored or overlooked. Health professionals and college life experts have been interviewed and have provided their insight into what foods and lifestyle changes can be made for college students to keep them as healthy as possible. You will learn the basics of the right ingredients, what you should always avoid and why the occasional meal out will not kill you. You will learn how to avoid gaining all that extra weight and finally some of the top recipes currently available for quick, healthy cooking and how you can use these, regardless of whether you are stuck in a dorm room or your parents basement. The key to healthy living for college students is in a good diet, and this book will provide everything you need to maintain that.

Communicating with Your Dog Review

Communicating with Your Dog
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you really want to learn to communicate with your dog, this is an excellent book! I agree 100% with the other positive reviews in every way. When I bought this book, I had never trained a dog before. I was not only AMAZED at how quickly I was able to find a common language with my dog, but also at how many of the classic "A-ha!" moments that my dog and I mutually shared. With this book as my guide, my dog not only obtained her Canine Good Citizen Certification, but is now also a fully trained and liscenced Therapy Dog--a great honor and accomplishment and one step down from a working Service Dog! With a common language we are able to communicate wonderfully. Also, many of the commands can be combined to string along a fully functioning sentence which is always fun! I am often asked where I had my dog professionally trained and people are always impressed that I did it all myself. With a reasonable amount of intelligence, patience, and creativity, anyone can teach their dog the basic commands. True, the author is no comedian, but who cares.
FYI, some of the more advanced commands (such as 'jump') may at first seem 'ridiculous', but I have found when I need to tell my dog that I need her to get up into a car, or onto the scale at the vet, or even just to jump up on the bed to say goodmorning (which she knows she must have permission to do) its a lifesaver. I also can't live without the command 'leave it' (invaluable!) and if you are a puppy owner, the communication 'bells' worked so well for me that housetraining took under 2 weeks! My dog still uses the windchime I have hung on my back door to tell me that she needs to go outside--something I don't always pick up on if I am on the computer. I can't say enough good things about this book!

The Philadelphia Inquirer's reviewer called this book's previous edition "...the best canine behavior-correction book I've ever read." This brand new slightly enlarged edition is even better, with information n how dog owners can test their pet's "IQ", and instructions for teaching a dog to respond to twenty basic words. Author Ted Baer emphasizes a humane approach to teaching canine obedience. Full-color photos throughout help to clarify training details.

Secrets of Good Carb / Low Carb Living Review

Secrets of Good Carb / Low Carb Living

I have most of Sandra Woodruff's books and I haven't found a bad recipe yet. This book is no exception. The California Club Wraps are to die for. They were so good that I made them several days in a row. I also tried the Chipotle Black Bean Chili, which was excellent. My husband is a picky eater and generally hates diet food, but he loves everything I've made from Sandra Woodruff cookbooks. I frequently serve her recipes to company and no one can guess they're low-fat and healthy. This particular book also has lots of common-sense advice on doing a low-carb diet and offers two versions, one for a quick start and another for a diet with more carbs. Both give two weeks of menus.

From the top-selling author of The Good Carb Cookbook comes a comprehensive and motivating guide to the good-carb lifestyle. Lately, low-carb diets have been all the rage, but until recently little scientific research has been available regarding their effectiveness and potential health consequences. Now, studies are proving that low-carb diets do work and, contrary to popular belief, they don't pose health risks-if they are done right. But with so many diets to choose from, it is hard for many people to find a program that is realistic for their lifestyle and to which they can adhere. Nationally recognized nutritionist Sandra Woodruff demystifies the process and explains how anyone can tailor a low-carb plan to their individual needs to achieve long-term weight loss. She provides hundreds of delicious recipes, innovative menu plans, instructive cooking tips, and helpful advice for eating out. The healthy eating plan in Secrets of Good-Carb/Low-Carb Living includes lean proteins, healthy fats, and good carbs to not only lose weight but also to lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels and help correct metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. Now anyone can get better results from their low-carb diet or formulate a new eating plan specifically for their needs. With Sandra Woodruff, low-carb living never tasted so good!

Jenny's Country Kitchen-recipes For Making Homemade A Little Easier: Recipes for Making Homemade a Little Easier Review

Jenny's Country Kitchen-recipes For Making Homemade A Little Easier: Recipes for Making Homemade a Little Easier
Average Reviews:

The title of this book is right on: if you like homemade taste without as much work, you'll enjoy this cookbook. There are make-ahead mixes, freezer and crockpot recipes, and helpful color-coding of recipes. Our family enjoyed making the banana bread recipe, which also encourages readers to make a double batch (4 loaves) and wrap'n'freeze the extra loaves for convenience later. (Yes, we baked two loaves and now wish we had made more.) Jenny's recipes are pantry-friendly and do not require exotic or specialty ingredients. Even so, I will definitely try her suggestion to make our own vanilla with a real bean infused in alcohol. The artwork adds a charming touch throughout the book and makes it feel like a book you can sit back, browse and enjoy. This book would make a nice gift as well.

High Road to Health: A Vegetarian Cookbook Review

High Road to Health: A Vegetarian Cookbook
Average Reviews:

First, Thank You Amazon for your speedy delivery. I had this book in 3 days.
I purchased this book not to become a vegetarian but to learn to cook healthier foods. I must say that after reading and trying the recipes Lyndsay and Ariane did a wonderful job. This book actually informs the reader on the health benefits of a more natural diet using whole grains and more fruits and vegetables. They do not say you have to be a vegetarian they just give you information and guidelines for a healthier lifestyle.
If anyone has tried Vegetarian cookbooks before (as I have), and thrown them out because they were complicated with ingredients you can't find, try this book, I had almost everything in my kitchen already, there are no funky things to go out and find, and my sons (9 and 11) have decided they like soy milk better than regular milk. Best book I have ever purchase. Thanks goes to Lyndsay and Ariane.

The Essential Vegetarian Cookbook: Your Guide to the Best Foods on Earth: What to Eat, Where to Get It, How to Prepare It Review

The Essential Vegetarian Cookbook: Your Guide to the Best Foods on Earth: What to Eat, Where to Get It, How to Prepare It
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is THE cookbook to buy if you're making the big change from carnivore to herbivore. Written in a friendly, light manner with lots of tips and helpful information, The Essential Vegetarian also offers tasty recipes that don't call for exotic or unusual ingredients.
Before offering the recipes, Dianna Shaw provides several types of menus for different lifestyles. For example, there are menus for athletes, pregnant or nursing women, diabetics and even one for people who want to lose weight. The menus are well-balanced and interesting and offer tips on how to incorporate healthier eating into a busy lifestyle.
My main complaint about other vegetarian cookbooks is that many of their recipes would not be considered by the average American because of the ingredients or length of time required to prepare the dish. This is an important consideration a vegetarian cookbook author should keep in mind, especially if he or she wants to win over more people to vegetarianism. Shaw's recipes are fun and unique, without daunting the novice cook. She includes a few that present more of a challenge to the more experienced cook and even changes a few familiar recipes to provide a new twist, such as her Kidney Bean Hummus.
Shaw leaves little to chance. In her Breakfast section, she gives easy-to-understand and concise instructions on how to create the perfect poached egg. Her recipes for hot cereals, such as oatmeal and cornmeal mush, are clever and helpful, particularly if you're someone like me, who often has trouble avoiding lumps in the cereal.
I strongly recommend this book to vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. Shaw is not a preachy author. In her introduction, she talks about craving and eating meat voraciously during her pregnancy and makes no apologies. She prefers vegetarianism, but does not come across as a religious zealot. I think even members of the National Cattlemen's Association would like this book. Her other book, Almost Vegetarian, is another good read with great recipes.

$3 Meals: Feed Your Family Delicious, Healthy Meals for Less than the Cost of a Gallon of Milk Review

$3 Meals: Feed Your Family Delicious, Healthy Meals for Less than the Cost of a Gallon of Milk
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book does a brief overview of how to save money at the grocery store (nothing really new). It goes on to present a major money saving strategy -- making every sauce, stock, dressing, and marinade from scratch. From there, the author presents recipes for main dishes. She finishes with recipes for baking breads and muffins from scratch.
The recipes are sound, and I have no doubt that they will produce reasonably healthy and tasty results. But...
#1 -- there is no reason to make every sauce from scratch. With sound couponing and savy shopping, I can get a bottle of bbq sauce for free (same for salad dressing, bottles of marinade, etc). If I make those things from scratch (and I frequently do), it is a question of quality, not cost.
#2 -- the main dishes presented are not complete meals. Most of them require additional side dishes (vegetable, fruit, and/or starch) to complete the meal. Beyond a passing mention of a crispy salad and fresh bread, the author does not provide any assistance in how to complete the meal and stay under budget. No ideas for inexpensive sides are provided.
#3 -- many of the recipes are not make-able for the advertised $3 pricetag. Unless I were to catch the fish myself, I simply do not see how I could make a dish calling for a pound and a half of bass or cod for a total cost of under $3. Nor could I make a dish that calls for 2 bulbs of fennel along with a pound of chicken and come in at that price.
#4 -- the serving sizes are a bit unrealistic. Most recipes call for 1 to 1.5 pounds of protein (beef, fish, chicken, or pork) and will serve 4 to 6 people. For six people, that's a 4 ounce portion of protein. Admittedly that is the recommended serving for many, but it is not enough for some men-folk and growing boys.
#5 -- virtually none of the sauces/marinades/dressings presented in the beginning of the book are used in the remaining recipes. so what are they for?
I think this book does have some good points, and a lot of good basic recipes. It presents some of the information and tools needed to control grocery budgets, but not all of them. If the author intended to present meals that were under $3 per serving, she succeeds. However, her book implies that it is $3 for SIX people... an unrealistic and unrealized promise. If I caught all of the ingredients on sale at their lowest price of the year, I could conceivably make most of them for under $6 each. If I were shopping on an average day, many of them would come closer to $10.

Hepatitis C is a potentially fatal virus that attacks the liver. According to the Centers for Disease Control, Hepatitis C has already infected an estimated four to five million Americans, and worldwide it may have infected as many as 200 million. Most experts agree that if the rate of Hepatitis C infection isnÂ't curbed soon, it will eventually kill more people each year than AIDS. However, Hepatitis C is not always fatal, and it can be fought successfully. For many who suffer from the virus, eating properly can delay the end stages leading to cirrhosis of the liver. It also can diminish the uncomfortable symptoms of the disease. The Hepatitis C Cookbook has been prepared with the special dietary needs of people suffering from Hepatitis C in mind. Hepatitis C does not have to make eating a miserable experience. By using medical guidelines, the Hepatitis C Cookbook provides a road map to healthy, tasty foods to eat and enjoy. Following these dietary changes can also make a significant difference in oneÂ's attitude as well as the variety, severity, and frequency of symptoms.
