Munchie Madness Review

Munchie Madness
Average Reviews:

This Book is an informative resource book for teenagers who want to live a compassionate, healthy lifestyle. Teenagers will relate to the main part of the book as it contains tasty, nutritious recipes that are easily prepared. Most of the recipes are vegan, and each contains the number of servings that the recipe makes as well as the calories, protein, fat and carbohydrates for each serving. Recipes are divided into the following sections: "Smoothies & Shakes," "Breakfast," "Salads, Dressings, Spreads, & Dips," "Soups," "Main Dishes" and "Cakes, Pies, Candies, Pudding." Laura Holzapfel offers an insightful message at the beginning of the book in "Notes from a Vegetarian Teen" and Suzanne Havala, who is a vegetarian, author and consultant on food and nutrition, provides important information for teenagers (and their parents) in "Vegetarian Nutrition: A Primer for Teens." Havala effectively covers such topics as protein, calcium, iron, vitamin C, vitamin B12 and fats - to name a few. Whether you are a vegetarian teenager looking for some delicious, easy-to-make recipes, a parent wanting nutritious meals for your vegetarian child, or you are just looking for a good recipe book, Munchie Madness will not disappoint. -Reviewed by Glenn Perrett

How It All Vegan: Irresistible Recipes for an Animal-Free Diet Review

How It All Vegan: Irresistible Recipes for an Animal-Free Diet

This is a great cookbook. The best thing about it is not the yummy recipes, but the accessibility of the authors! You can reach them through their website and they are truly genuine and nice. The cookbook features cute drawings and pictures, fun comments, Jewish flair in some of the recipes, unique things you might not find other places, homemade health and beauty product recipes, instructions on how to make safe household cleaners, treats for your animal friends, a section on Kids' Stuff, and the ever-useful "45 Things to do with vinegar" section (that really came in handy!). This book is beginner-vegan-friendly. Most of the recipes are relatively easy to prepare and require minimum time and effort. The dessert section ROCKS! Try the Chocolate peanut butter cups...if you never thought you'd have them again, here they are, in full force! Yum! I've only tried a few recipes so far, and they've all been delicious. These Canadian punk rock wimmin have put together a great collection of vegan recipes. My only complaints with this book are that it lacks an index (which I'm told by the authors was supposed to be in there but didn't make it to the printer!), and several of the recipes contain bee products. bee pollen, beeswax, and honey are all used a bit in the book, especially in some of the smoothies and in the health and beauty products. I was disappointed about that, but have just avoided making the recipes that require those products. Other than that, the book is great.

The Organic Dog Biscuit Cookbook: Over 100 "Tail Wagging" Recipes Review

The Organic Dog Biscuit Cookbook: Over 100 Tail Wagging Recipes

I was bought this book as a gift and have made 4 of the recipes so far. I like the ideas this book gives and the fact that it is all organic. It's also been great at letting me know what is good/bad for dogs. However, the one area that I think they've totally got it wrong is in putting the recipe instructions together. Of the 4 that I have made so far, only one of them was able to be made by following the recipe directly. The other 3 all had issues with quantities. When I mixed the recommended amounts for the dough I invariably ended up with a goopy mess! I ended up having to add far more flour than the recipe called for to get something that could be rolled out - as I was instructed to do. I'm a keen baker so I am not doubting my baking skills - I think the authors simply did not test their own recipes for accuracy. Also - some of the instructions on creating treats here would result in treats that would be large for a great dane - let along a normal sized dog. It's bewildering - I can't understand how this got to print with so many problems with the instructions! If you buy it be prepared to modify the recipes to make them work!

Vegan Lunch Box: 130 Amazing, Animal-Free Lunches Kids and Grown-Ups Will Love Review

Vegan Lunch Box: 130 Amazing, Animal-Free Lunches Kids and Grown-Ups Will Love
Average Reviews:

I just received my copy of Vegan Lunch Box after much anticipation. I was a fan of the blog that inspired the book and for some reason expected the format of the book to be similar, which is what appealed to me. Unfortunately, the entire book is laid out in a new way.
First of all, there are virtually no pictures (save for a special insert in the middle of the book), and none to accompany the recipes. There are very few set "menus" except in sections for special occasions and a few to kick off your thinking. The recipes are divided into apps, salads, soups, sandwiches, main courses, sides, breads, desserts and beverages, which is useful, though there are a few stand-by recipes in here I think she could have skipped for most of us- veggie dogs and baked beans for example, takes up an entire page.
The recipes go perhaps a bit beyond lunch- I won't be making soups or homemade beverages for my child's lunch box- but that's ok, it makes it a bit more versatile as a book for veggie families.
What I found helpful about the original blog was the creativity of how Jennifer, the author, put the meals together in the bento lunchboxes she created. The combinations of food items and what her child choose to eat and appreciated. It's not the recipes I struggle with, it's how to put together an appealing lunch for a vegetarian child (and one that her classmates will envy!).
That said, this is a useful book and a must have for parents to new vegetarians, and does have plenty to offer the veteran as well. I just wish they had followed the format of the blog a little bit more closely. The book does mention that all the original recipes are on the blog archive- but that's why I purchased the book, so I could have that information in a book format.
