This is easily the best home baking book I have used. The only complaint is that she uses salted margarine but she does add that you should add a pinch of salt if you must use unsalted butter. Oleo is the traditional fat. The recipes are clear and easy. She uses self-rising flour in some recipes but also tells how to make your own. A few are clunkers but there are some real gems here: full of freckles pound cake, meltaway blueberry coffeecake, and devil's food cake are just a few great examples. BUY THIS BOOK!

Don't miss out on reading the Intro. Here is an inspirational story of the beginnings of two people who fall in love with what they do--tarts.
Here are their tried and true recipes, for which they've made them over and over again. The results are yours for the baking. To do this there are great sections on equipment, technique.
Not only for tarts, but salds, soups and muffins, brownies, cookies, etc.
I'm particularly impressed with "Roasted Eggplant and Tomato Tart with Basil" "Chocolate-Banana Tart" "Black Plum and Honey Tart".
The Summer Berry Scones are knock outs and The Crunchy Dried Cranberry-Chocolate Chip Cookies are killers also.
This will be a fun book for the home gourmet to mess around with and discover new cook with your hands baked goods to eat with the fingers food!
Well done with great reading thorughout, especially with the fun side bars scattered throughout.

Gifts in a Jar: Muffins & Breads (Gifts in a Jar, 2) Review

Gifts in a Jar: Muffins and Breads (Gifts in a Jar, 2)

What a disappointment! What a disappointment! I returned this loser. Virtually every recipe (if not every single recipe)begins with Bisquik. Now, I like Bisquik as much as the next person -- but General Mills provides tons of recipes using it. I've often seen warnings that make-a-mix versions cannot be substituted for Bisquik ... Well, to me, the book would have been great had the author tested the recipes with homemade versions of Bisquik and used that, or tested them with both homemade Bisquik and General Mills's Bisquik and called for either one in his recipes. That would have been fine. But I'd feel funny giving a gift mix based on a commercial mix, so just wasn't enthusiastic about this. The recipes didn't look tempting; if you want new ways to use Bisquik, check General Mills's website or any of their cookbooks. IF you want to make gift mixes for muffins and breads, check the Make a Mix books or Diane Phillips's The Perfect Mix. Don't waste your money on this loser. Hodgson Mill Whole Grain Baking: 400 Healthy and Delicious Recipes for Muffins, Breads, Cookies, and More Review

Hodgson Mill Whole Grain Baking: 400 Healthy and Delicious Recipes for Muffins, Breads, Cookies, and More

I bought this book on first sight, after deciding that I wanted to do more whole-grain baking. I like and very much trust Hodgson Mill products and I thought that this cookbook would be an excellent resource. I was right, to a point.
This cookbook is filled with good recipes for all kinds of baked goods, using whole-grain products produced by Hodgson Mill. This is to be expected since every manufacturer that distributes any kind of recipe always specifies that their product is the one to use. That in itself is not an issue here, but what IS an issue is that many of the recipes contained therein require special boxed mixes. It is one thing to specify a particular brand of flour; it is quite another to require a specialty mix that is manufactured by no one else.
Many of these special box mixes are not readily available on store shelves but require a mail-order purchase. The end result is that many of the recipes in this book are not something that can be thrown together on a whim but require advance planning. Often this kind of planning is not done and as a result many of the recipes likely will go unused.
Now, all of that said, there are a good many recipes in this book that do not require special mixes or mail-order ingredients. Of those that I have tried there have been no duds - each resulting loaf/batch of muffins/etc. has turned out to be excellent with my family disappointed when the last is eaten. In that regard this book has been a huge success.
An interesting aspect of this book is the inclusion of gluten-free recipes. For those with gluten intolerance, this is a blessing and will put great-tasting breads on the table for all. Granted, some of these still require special mixes but this is a small price to pay in such a circumstance.
This cookbook is a good choice for people who like whole-grain breads and are willing to sift through a collection for recipes that do not require specialty mixes. For those with access to those mixes, the value of this collection goes up dramatically.

GF home baking at it's best! I loved the chickpea bread as a sandwich bread - it had a "bland" taste and it didn't fall apart at all. I slice and wrap each piece in plastic wrap and then freeze them in a ziploc freezer bag. I also loved the Farmhouse bread. I made the batter and then baked it in English muffin pans to use as hamburger rolls - yum! I found two errors in the book. Two additional eggs are listed in the dry ingred. section for the Farmhouse Bread recipe - these should be omitted. Also, barley is listed in the GF flour ingredient list at the beginning of the book. Barley is NOT gluten free and should NEVER be eaten by a Celiac. This book had eliminated my search for edible GF breads.

I just got this book. It was great. I read it to my 6 year old sister. And she loved it. You should get it for your child if your looking for a good childrens book. It teaches children to obey their parents and other brother and sisters that are older. And what might happen if they disobey. Your children will learn something from this book. The muffin people are cute!! And the illustrations are very colorful. That alone will attract children!
