Andrea Bliss Lerman has thoroughly researched these favorite recipes from many people in the macrobiotic community. The basics are all there and the desserts are delicious. I especially like the traditional tortilla recipe from whole corn. It tastes really great made with blue corn.

This book really changed my life. It is written in more of a casual format, but its content is very good. It contains a great deal of diet guidelines, as well as a number of very good vegan whole-natural-food recipies. I own a number of vegan cookbooks but this is the one that I go to 90% of the time. In addition, following this book, I've lost about 50 pounds!

Gluten-Free Without Rice: Easy Cooking for Variety on a Gluten-Free Diet Review

Gluten-Free Without Rice: Easy Cooking for Variety on a Gluten-Free Diet
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Gluten-free baking is different than baking with wheat. Since gluten is what traps the leavening gases and causes bread to rise, gluten-free breads are dense. This is especially true if they are made without multiple additives and stabilizers (which many people are allergic to) as the recipes in this book are. I'm not sure from your review if your problem with "bricks" is unrealistic expectations on how the bread should turn out or a baking problem. However, your "gummy" crackers are almost certainly due to over-mixing. This and other cooking issues that can cause problems with and which are unique to allergy/gluten-free baking are addressed on pages 9-10 of the book. One of the books that I have written does give directions in steps rather than paragraphs (The Ultimate Food Allergy Cookbook and Survival Guide) and I do have a website (which currently comes up 6th if you search "food allergies" in Google, or you can get it under publisher information if you look up any of my books on Google Books. Sorry to make you search but Amazon frowns on websites being posted). If you contact me though my website, I will give you whatever support you need for your baking problems. Also, I kind of "fixed" your rating by bringing the average up to 3. Good luck with your son's diet, and I hope you read this and contact me through my website. Posted by the author.

OK, So Now You're a Vegetarian: Advice and 100 Recipes from One Vegetarian to Another Review

OK, So Now You're a Vegetarian: Advice and 100 Recipes from One Vegetarian to Another
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Though I am 23, older than the intended audience, my Mom bought me this book as a present. I was thrilled with it. Lauren Butts has created a fun and easy cookbook for anyone. I love the layout of the cookbook, it is divided into sections, and I enjoyed her nutritional info in the front of the book. Maybe it will inspire more teens to go veg.I found this cookbook full of great meatless recipes. I must warn strict vegetarians and vegans however, that most recipes contain dairy products, or eggs. There is a great recipe for "Nathan's Blueberry Breakfast Cupcakes", that is easy to make and tastes like store bought. However when I tried to get my three year old neighbor to eat one, he refused in horror. Other recipes that I have enjoyed making include: apricot chimichangas, Thai tofu Veggie Wrap-yum, Burrito Roll up, Veggie Pitas (Tastes the same as Wendy's veggie pita), Layered Nacho Salad, Mock Caesar Salad (in case you didn't know, Caesar Salad dressing is typically made with ANCHOVIES-fish=meat), Chilled Berry Soup-this is a fabulous recipe I made last summer when berries were plentiful, it is totally tasty and makes a great meal, TASTY FLATBREAD PIZZA WITH ARTICHOKE HEARTS!! This pizza was so unbelievably tasty, I have always been a bit wary of artichoke hearts, they just look kind of disgusting you know, but I was so shocked to discover their delicious taste!! Veggie Quesadillas were also fabulous. SPAGHETTI PIE is indeed a great dish, and I like to make it when serving non-vegetarians. It has been a hit with everyone so far. Tofu McNuggets are the absolute bomb. These recipes are only a fraction of the great ones in this book. I would highly recommend it to parents of new young vegetarians, or college students like myself who don't have that much time to cook. Some have opined that this book is full of recipes that are fattening, but I think most know, that us vegetarians are a mostly lean lot, and I can personally attest that the recipes aren't fattening. Thanks Lauren for creating a great book, it is indeed an oasis as far as Veg cookbooks go. Its great to have a cookbook that isn't full of really long, hard to find, expensive ingredients!

The Heart-Smart Diabetes Kitchen: Fresh, Fast, and Flavorful Recipes Made with Canola Oil Review

The Heart-Smart Diabetes Kitchen: Fresh, Fast, and Flavorful Recipes Made with Canola Oil
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The recipes in this cookbook are, of course, healthy since it was supported by the American Diabetes Association. However, when I bought it I did not know that it was really published by the Canola industry. Every receipe calls for that oil. Not that the oil isn't good for you but I felt, first, that it was just a big advertisement I had paid for. My second objection is that many of the recipes called for "exotic" or not ordinary products you would have in your pantry. I don't like having to buy a whole bottle of an "exotic" ingredient when the recipe only requires 1/4 teaspoon. I'm disappointed in the American Diabetes Association and the cookbook.

In the author's lasted installment of books and cookbooks to rescue the many folks out there who suffer from food related illnesses, (allergies, sensitivities, intolerances or malabsorptions)this one is a tresure trove of valuable information, tips, tricks and suggestions. For many years I have been recovering from food sensitivities that have contributed to migraine headaches, muscle and joint pain, and hormone imbalance.
I have searched for one book that could rescue me and the patients I see in an Environmental Medicine practice. Patients have asked me so many times I can't count, "Is there a book I can buy that will help me understand all this"? Here is the answer we have all been looking for!!
Including tips on money saving shopping, internet resources, and just her own ingenuity, Ms. Dumke leads the pack in cutting edge information. This book is great for the "seasoned cook" like myself who has thrown out a few meals in her day because they just didn't taste good. Or the novice who doesn't really love to cook but have found themselves in the position of having to change their diet and lifestyle in order to regain their health. I have already recommended this book and will continue to do so.
I will also use it as a helpful tool in my own kitchen. Ms. Dumkes' personal experience in the complicated area of food allergy makes this book REAL!!!

The Book of Afternoon Tea Review

The Book of Afternoon Tea
Average Reviews:

This book starts with 2 pages of intoduction -- a brief history and instructions on how to brew tea. "Illustrated" is an understatement! The book is full of gorgeous, full-color photographs. It contains one recipe per page, starting with a photo of the finished product arranged on a serving plate and 3 photos next to the recipe showing the steps in preparation. The most "advanced" recipes involve using a pastry bag with a star tip, but that's as complicated as they get.
sandwiches: 12 recipes / savories: 12 recipes / scones & muffins: 6 recipes / yeast breads & quick breads: 10 recipes / cakes: 10 recipes / small cakes: 10 recipes / special cakes: 12 recipes / pastries: 8 recipes / cookies: 12 recipes / preserves: 4 recipes / drinks: 6 recipes
This is a wonderful cookbook and one of my favorite sources of tea-time recipes!

This cookbook has been our favorite for the last couple of years. At first glance, the recipes appear to be too simple to be exciting, but somehow they pack a lot of complexity and flavor into a few ingredients. It is the PERFECT cookbook for everyday after work cooking, but there are also plenty of recipes that you will want to serve your guests too. Their grilled flank steak recipe is a standard at every summer party I throw, and it gets rave reviews every time.

I had this book for over 10 years and used it so much I had to order another one to start cooking some more. This book has some really great recipes in it and after making them once or twice you can doctor them up and make each recipe your own. It possesses a lot of useful info for the new and experienced cook and you will really love some of the recipes included.

The first "A Date With a Dish" appeared in 1948; it reappeared as "The Ebony Cookbook" in 1962, and has stood the test of time. Freda DeKnight's selection from the thousands of American Negro recipes in her collection is unique. It preserves many dishes that might otherwise be lost to a TV-dinner generation. It provides a guide and reference for everyone, from novice cook to discriminating gourmet, who loves good food. The uses of herbs, spices and wines, a 'Guide for the Housewife' (which really tells how to cook), and a section of complete menus supplement the organized presentation of recipes for everything from appetizers to dessert.

Miller takes many of the stereotype definitions of Christianity and Christian by giving them a new twist with examples from everyday life. He wants to show that we are all a work in progress. This is a collection of articles he has written over several years and well-worth the read.

Calvin Miller is a writer's writer-a renaissance man of letters. His insightful devotional musings have blessed countless souls along their faith journeys for decades. He has quietly and steadily practiced his craft of wordsmithing, with every stroke of his metaphorical pen delving into the depth of the mystery of God's incarnational work in this world. The Unfinished Soul represents another facet of Calvin Miller's writing-more artistic, more introspective. Calvin mines his own inner being for the jewels of faith that are to be discovered there-some fully formed and shining like onyx while others are still forming-grace under pressure. The reader becomes a companion, observing the shaping of faithfulness in an unfinished soul.

Average Reviews:

Ms. Zukin's book is probably an invaluable resource for those who cannot tolerate lactose, but those of us who are allergic to milk protein will find dangerous information in this book.
She lists as "dairy-free" products which clearly contain milk (Wendy's bread sticks contail "skim milk"; their hamburger buns contain "sodium caseinate"). These are not items that have changed over the years; my dairy-allergic son has never been able to eat Wendy's buns, and he's nearly 13 years old.
The recipes are fairly good, though I get irked by reading "milk substitute" in them - I'd rather see the brand name of the product she used (soy milk tastes very different from rice milk, for instance).
With this book, as with every packaged food product, you must read carefully and be certain the food she mentions is safe. You can't take her word for it. The title, therefore, is quite misleading.
I won't buy another book written by this author.

Harvest of Pumpkins and Squash Review

Harvest of Pumpkins and Squash
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have enjoyed other cookbooks by Lou Seibert Pappas (Creme Brulee; Ice Cream & Sorbet; Coffee Cakes) so I ordered this without first checking it out in a book store. It did not diappoint.
The first several chapters provide very helpful background about choosing, storing and cooking squash as well as listing the types of squash (both winter and summer squash varieties).
Many of the recipes are novel and are delicious-sounding pairing of ingredients that I haven't seen in other cookbooks (and I have a lot). More than half of the recipes are accompanied by a beautiful full-page color photo. As a vegetarian, I found many recipes I want to try but the Entrees chapter also includes a nice selection of recipes for meat eaters (from chicken to lamb, pork to fish).
Chapters include Breads and Breakfast (rosemary-polenta pumpkin muffins, zucchini-golden raisin quick bread, pumpkin-orange waffles with hazelnut-maple sryup butter); Soups, Salads and Sides (butternut squash-pear bisque, roasted butternut squash polenta with fried sage, goat cheese-stuffed squash blossom and heirloom tomato salad); Entrees (five-spice pork tenderloin with pumpkin half-moons and red grapes, grilled chicken breasts stuffed with zucchini and goat cheese, chayote stuffed with lamb and pine nuts); and Desserts (cranberry-pecan pumpkin drop cookies, candied ginger-pumpkin creme brulee, pumpkin cheesecake with gingersnap crust, caramel-glazed pumpkin date bars).
As you might expect, pumpkins are the most popular squash used throughout the book and appear in nearly half of the recipes. Other squashes featured include butternut, spaghetti, zucchini, chayote, kabocha, and acorn. Several recipes let you choose the winter or summer squash to use but, don't worry, there is a list from which to choose.
This would be a wonderful hostess gift in the fall if you are a guest for dinner or a weekend.
