I cannot say enough good things about this cookbook! Rebecca has created a series of wonderful recipes which are not only easy to prepare but absolutely delicious. This is a must have for all southern households!

Thanks to Rebecca Lang's Southern Entertaining for a New Generation, you no longer have to be raised in the South to entertain your guests with the hospitality of a Southerner. Designed for her own generation's needs, this creative book on entertaining is packed with tips and hints for easier cooking, and timelines to simplify the process of entertaining. In short, it's about how to host parties with less stress while serving food as good as grandmother used to make. Unlike most books on entertaining, the chapters are organized by the time of day in which a party is scheduled. The recipes are easy enough for the novice cook, and timelines are included to make sure that all of the food will be ready at the appropriate time. Each step is listed by the exact time of day at which it should be done, even when to run the dishwasher. The chapters all contain three or four party themes, each with recipes, serving piece suggestions, detailed timelines, and grocery lists. Some recipes even list lighter ingredients that can be substituted for high-fat ones without compromising taste. Each menu also includes wine suggestions to lessen the stress of choosing wine, even suggesting which glass to use and what to do if the host doesnt have enough wine glasses. Because so many young adults lead busy lives, the menus also include shortcuts in case there isn't enough time to make the entire menu from scratch. One of the most helpful features of Rebecca Langs Southern Entertaining for a New Generation is that the book provides serving suggestions for younger cooks who don't yet own all the serving pieces they need. "There is no reason not to host a party because you dont have enough china," she insists. "You can still have a great time by using some of the fun, creative suggestions in this book."

StarPet: How to Make Your Pet a Star Review

StarPet: How to Make Your Pet a Star

We picked up this book during our research about how to get our two cats, Ted and Sylvia, jobs in the entertainment industry, for we had agreed among ourselves that they are super cute, and if we liked them, and we are very picky, why shouldn't the world?
You get a lot for your money with STARPET. At first I thought author Bash Dibra was from India; his name sounds like a Bollywood star. But, as he reveals, he grew up in a refugee camp in his native Albania, where he became obsessed with dogs and how to train them properly for entertainment. Growing up, he went to Hollywood where he met the legends of star pet training, including Rudd Weatherwax, the man behind LASSIE, and Frank Inn, the man who trained BENJI. The Old Masters, Bash calls them. They told him their secrets and now he passes them on, like a baton made of beef jerky.
work training the pets of a dozen or more Hollywood and music stars, including the pets of Jennifer Lopez and Mariah Carey. Catfight? He doesn't reveal, but I would hate to see those two cats pitted against each other, for it is said their owners aren't too fond of each other. Bash holds private StarPet workshops where he will work with you individually, but we are so far from Hollywood it's good he has condensed his training into nearly 400 pages, illustrated with dandy photos and some cleverly conceived line drawings. Bash reveals the three keys to motivation-the three P's he calls them-persistence, praise, and patience-but never punishment. He doesn't believe in cruelty to animals, even in the service of making them stars. That would be crossing the moral line.
He envisions a world in which you and your pet can enjoy the truly creative, collaborative work done by "Strasberg and Monroe," or "Scorcese and De Niro." That's aiming a little high, but you get the idea. A heartwarming book by a man with old-fashioned show business charm and moxie.
PS, we decided not to train Ted and Sylvia for stardom after all, but they are still probably the most appealing cats in North America.

The Good Enough to Eat Breakfast Cookbook Review

The Good Enough to Eat Breakfast Cookbook
Average Reviews:

Having seen a profile of the restaurant and its owner on national t.v. some time ago, I was eager to visit this place and taste what everyone was raving about. Now that we've taken that maiden trip, are we glad we did! The recipes in the book include every kind of yummy breakfast treat you can imagine. (The coconut and chocolate chip Peter Paul Pancakes are my fave!) If you have the time and patience to fuss over breakfast and don't just want to grab an apple and cup of coffee as you race out the door, this is a great way to enjoy Breakfast as a main meal of the day, and treat your family to something special too. The recipes are straightforward and easy to follow. The author (who is also the restaurant owner)has a friendly and easy to read style and it makes the cookbook more than just a step by step instructional. If you are ever in New York City, stop by this place on the Upper East Side and see for yourself why Carrie Levin has earned such a great reputation in her business.

So What Can I Eat?: How to Make Sense of the New Dietary Guidelines for Americans and Make Them Your Own Review

So What Can I Eat: How to Make Sense of the New Dietary Guidelines for Americans and Make Them Your Own
Average Reviews:

Finally! This is the first nutrition book that actually approaches diet and nutrition in a manageable way. Zied helps demystify the new nutrition pyramid, while creating a framework in which the reader can personally apply it to his or her daily life. The `Daily Food and Fitness Tracker' is by far the easiest and most flexible method of monitoring my food intake and activity level that I have come across.
The author makes you feel as if she has been in the same place you have in terms of managing weight and eating habits. Unlike so many other books that seem to focus solely on weight loss, Zied seems focused on improving health and quality of life. By not eliminating entire food groups from your diet, she helps to promote a sustainable lifestyle change and not a `quick fix.'
The stories and anecdotes throughout the book make it an easy read. Zied responds to every question you have before they even come up. The section on eating out and meal plans are very easy to follow and are useful. Unlike other books of this type, the recipes are actually foods you'd want to eat and enjoy in your everyday life....we tried `Linda's Chicken Meatballs' and loved them.

The Sweet Potato Lover's Cookbook: More than 100 ways to enjoy one of the world's healthiest foods Review

The Sweet Potato Lover's Cookbook: More than 100 ways to enjoy one of the world's healthiest foods
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These days, I think published cook books need better formatting and illustration in order to compete against the resources that are already available through an internet search. This nice little book on sweet potatoes would have benefited greatly from some color photographs - especially since it is basically a revised and updated edition of The Sweet Potato Cookbook. As it stands, the only color photos are on the front and back cover. If I were considering this book as a gift for someone - say for my diabetic father or anyone moving away from white potatoes for health reasons - I would be unhappy with this purchase. While it is full of recipes, it lacks visual appeal. There are a few drawn illustrations but they do little to educate or inspire, in my opinion.
The recipes range from super simple mashed sweet potatoes to exotic desserts like Lime Sweet Potato Chiffon Pie (boy, I sure would have loved to see what that looks like). There are small fact and history sections in the front that I found interesting. Such as putting cut sweet potatoes in salt water to keep them from browning. Recipes are divided up into the traditional categories: appetizers, beverages, soups, salads, breads, breakfasts, main dishes, side dishes, friendship recipes (recipes shared by friends)and some international selections in the Around the World chapter. There's a wide variety here to choose from and since I bought this for my own use, I am not unhappy with my purchase. It will benefit anyone who would like to learn more about cooking this super food - to include the traditional methods.
It should be noted that this is not a vegan, vegetarian or even a diabetic cook book. While some of the recipes certainly fall into those categories, others include items like milk, eggs, meat, bacon drippings, etc... Beyond including the sweet potato as an ingredient, the recipes have little else in common - no "theme" to offer those who have specific dietary requirements. The subtitle of the book is: "More than 100 ways to Enjoy One of the World's Healthiest Foods" - unfortunately, many of the recipes include decidedly unhealthy ingredients. While perhaps better for you than alternatives, Sweet Potato Doughnuts, for example, are still just deep fried dough. There's a little bit of everything in this collection.
A 3 star review doesn't mean this is a bad cook book. Amazon defines a 3 star review as "OK".

The Hempnut Cookbook: Tasty, Omega-Rich Meals from Hempseed Review

The Hempnut Cookbook: Tasty, Omega-Rich Meals from Hempseed
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
From "The Vegan News", Autumn 2001:
Hempseed has been consumed by humans for over 5,000 years. The Hempnut Health and Cookbook details hempseed's history, its exceptional nutritional value, its medicinal properties and also briefly mentions some of hemp's other uses other than as a foodstuff. Hempnut is essentially shelled hempseed and is possibly the most nutritious plant food on earth. It can be used in many recipes as a replacement for nuts, soy products, grains or even eggs. The Hempnut Health and Cookbook contains 116 easily-prepared, mainly vegetarian recipes. About three quarters of which are either vegan or could be made vegan fairly easily by substituting maple syrup for honey and by replacing the dairy products with soya milk, soya yogurt and vegan cheese. The remaining recipes contain larger amounts of eggs and honey and would be more difficult to convert, especially for the new vegan. It does seem a shame though that we have to convert any of the recipes when the authors are themselves vegan! It's an American book, so oven temperatures are given in degrees F and ingredients are measured in cups.

My First Baking Book: A Bialosky & Friends Book Review

I found this book in our local library and used it to create a cooking project for a group of multi-age children. We tried the Thumbprint Cookies with great success. Using it gave me a great idea for a birthday gift and I've subsequently ordered several copies at Amazon.
The classic recipes are well-illustrated, easy-to-read and follow, and yummy. I especially liked the numbered step-by-step directions which are easy for children to read themselves. All the recipes feature multiple illustrations and begin with a list of needed utensils as well as ingredients. The author also covers safety issues involving the oven and stove.
After using it for my project I decided to give it, along with a kid-size apron, as a gift for a six-year-old girl. This book offers children and their parents lots of opportunities for fun and learning and will outlast any toy!

Entertaining for a Veggie Planet: 250 Down-to-Earth Recipes Review

Entertaining for a Veggie Planet: 250 Down-to-Earth Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a delightful cookbook which will light up your taste buds as it takes you into uncharted territory in vegetarian cooking. As the primary cook in a vegetarian household, I often find myself at a loss for new ideas, or uninspired by the typical offerings of vegetarian cookbooks. This book changes all that - I now have a wide range of possibilities that excite me, turning a chore into a fun activity.
Full disclosure here: I tested many recipes during the development of this cookbook. But I knew nothing about Didi Emmons before this testing - and with three young kids and a demanding job, I had no interest when a mutual friend suggested I might enjoy testing recipes and providing feedback. I declined, but the message was lost and a recipe was sent to me. I decided I'd try just one (Chard and Eggplant Salad with Miso-Sesame Vinaigrette). When I put a forkful of the finished product into my mouth, I was shocked to discover how good it was. This was the first of what were to be repeated experiences of finding that, in Didi's recipes, the whole is often greater than the sum of the parts - and that surprisingly good and often completely unexpected synergies develop from her recipes.
After this first test, I was hooked. I tested approximately 30 recipes over the next six months. With few exceptions, the recipes were excellent. In a remarkable number of cases, they were sublime. The "Hip Dip" always goes fast at parties. It's an edamame (green soy bean), cilantro, lime juice, olive oil, etc. mixture with a fresh and wholesome flavor. It's perfect slathered on hearty bread and cut into small sandwiches. Other must-try recipes include: Crispy Rice Cakes on Spinach with Viet Red Pepper Sauce - as visually appealing as it is delicious. Root Stew with Millet Cakes - a perfect winter dish and the first time I've ever found a flavorful way to cook millet. The root stew is excellent on its own, but the addition of the millet cakes creates a wonderful fusion. Also, Crispy Bun (noodle) Tofu - an exquisite combination of cooked, fried noodles with a carrot, red cabbage slaw and a tangy mint/lime juice/garlic sauce - hearty yet light - and scrumptious. And Creamy Parsnip Soup with Horseradish - sweet, filling, and with a delicate bite. And if you're in search of the perfect brownie recipe, look no further. Stowe Brownies are exactly as described in the book - "rich and slightly gooey with a crisp, tender exterior".
This book is also fun to read. It is sprinkled throughout with stories and advice about entertaining, including laugh out loud material about Didi's family and neighbors (especially her parents at the holidays) and advice about such diverse topics as purchasing truffle oil (a must-have item, the wonders of which I discovered thanks to Didi); lighting the wrappers from Amaretti di Saronno crackers and watching them flame and lift off into the air (it really works and lights up a dull party); and how to clean your home in 30 minutes. There's also a comprehensive "friendly guide to unfamiliar ingredients" - with descriptions of ingredients and advice on where to locate them.
If you find that you're stuck when it comes to entertaining with vegetarian dishes, this is a great book to get you out of the doldrums.

I got this after flipping through it and falling in love with the concept. I love that the cost for the dish and cost per person is listed at the top of every page. I tried the Chicken with Figs and Rosemary Wine Sauce (fig season is here, and I wanted to take advantage while I could) and was very pleased with the dish. The recipe is simple to execute, but tasted like a gourmet meal. I can't wait to try many other recipes. This is definitely a keeper!

IBS Relief: A Complete Approach to Managing Irritable Bowel Syndrome Review

IBS Relief: A Complete Approach to Managing Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the second edition of the same named book first published in 1999. The book seems to be written primarily from a dietitian's and psychologist's perspective so there are at times what I consider murky medical advice given, such as Healthy Eating and the concept of MyPyramid. The concept is that if you "stick" to your diet then you will be in control of your symptoms. I only wish! There are some good insights as to how powerful cognitive restructuring can be. One statement that made the book for me was "We recently did a study of the pain experienced by IBS sufferers versus Crohn's sufferers. We found that the pain of those with IBS was every bit as severe as the pain experienced by those with Crohn's disease. The difference between the two groups is: social support. Crohn's disease has more social support". This tells the authors and the readers that suffering with IBS can actually be greater than Crohn's because of the lack of support. To this end, the book does offer some valuable advice to talking to your doctor and learning to take control of your own health.

1 Dough, 100 Cookies (1 = 100) Review

1 Dough, 100 Cookies (1 = 100)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The basic cookie dough recipe in the beginning of the book calls for TWO CUPS of butter. Yet all the recipes later in the book call for ONE CUP, with the same quantities for all the other ingredients. Could the author have meant 2 STICKS of butter? Someone who isn't familiar with the proportions of ingredients in cookie doughs I'm afraid will end up with grease blobs in the pan. Or else I'm reading it wrong.
Other than that probable error, though, the book is worthy of 4 or 5 stars. It does contain many variations on a basic cookie dough that I think are realistic, appetizing, and usable. I bake cookies for a local cafe and am always looking for new ideas and ways to streamline my operations. This book will be great for that.

This is the fourth book in the FULL series, and like the Stephanie Plum series, you do not need to read the others to enjoy it. Start here (it is the best of the series yet) and then if it suits you, go back and read the other books, starting with Full House.
This book takes place in the south, and combines a sexy humor with a mystery about who is killing the local citizens of Beaumont. It includes Millionaire boy genious Max Holt and Jamey Swift, owner of the local newspaper, as they deal with the sultry weather, and the sizzling effect it is having on all the zany citizens. Dee Dee Fontana, an aging Beauty Queen is having a baby, and Vera the spinster mother-figure starts letting her hair down. A sexy psychic with her red neck ghost adds to the mix, as do a paper full of possible suspects. You will never guess who done it, but this is mostly about fun and sex, and not a heavy duty mystery.
Janet Evanovich and Charlotte Hughes have teamed up on this series and with Full Blast, it is evident that this is a team to be watched! I am looking forward to the continued evolution of this series.

I bought this book hoping to get some good advice and/or structure as to what exact foods my son should start eating once he was 4-6 months old. I was very disappointed that there was only one chapter that dealt with this and even there it doesn't give you any advice as to what fruit/veggie you should start with once the time is right. I'll keep it for the recipies I can use later but a more accurate title would be "Better Toddler Food" because it seems to focus on the 1 year old and up food arena with the recipies, etc that take up the vast majority of space in the book.
